Im german, 29 with significant savings. I’m currently on my second stay of METV, had 2 visa excempt entry’s last year. On my last entry 2 weeks ago, I have been told in a nice way by the IO that I have a lot of tourist entry’s and should consider getting a longterm visa. No more questions and stamped in. I’m already preparing to apply for dtv in August since I already have moved money from stocks to bank account but I will have to let it sit there for 3 months.

Do you think I will get another entry if I fly out and in before my METV expires?

Thanks for your help!
Answer summary
The user, a 29-year-old German expat, seeks advice on re-entering Thailand using a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) after receiving a warning from immigration about excessive tourist entries. They plan to apply for a long-term visa (DTV) in August but are unsure if they will be allowed another entry if they exit and immediately return before the METV expiration. Community comments suggest a mixed response, with some believing they could enter again without issues due to the nature of METVs, while others express concern that their previous tourist entry history may lead to denial upon re-entry.

Are you struggling to understand the stance of the Imigration officer who pulled the OP asideand warned him? Your forget: we are talking about the “milking” or the misuse of the “touristic entry system” for a longterm stay in Thailand.

This includes multiple tourist visas as well as visa-exempt entries.

“Longterm” in the eyes of Immigration is any accumulation of stay that exceed 180 days within a one-year period.

Obtaining a 60-days single-entry or 6-months multi-entry tourist visa after you have already done a few visa exempt stays within a one-year period, does not clean your touristic stamp history slate.

ANY accumulation of “touristic entries”, be it on a visa or without a visa, will be frowned upon once you start to maximize them.

The use of a tourist visa directly after you have completed visa-exempt stays, does not free you from the obligations. It equals a misuse of the tourist visa-system. The Immigration officers won’t be fooled.

Anyone who likes to spend more than half a year in Thailand within a one-year period, is not a “real tourist” anymore. For this purpose, there are other visa type options.

For people who like to spend a consecutive half a year of hibernation in South East Asia and who like to make Thailand a base for other travels, the 6-months multi-entry Tourist Visa is the perfect choice.

Yet, it must be self-understood that you need many months of absence from Thailand before you can repeatedly enter on a METV again.

Nongnuch Kamdee you are not milking the system if you are following the system. The METV is the same like DTV only shorter. You can't blame the people getting a visa and then using it this is ridiculous

Siggi Tirak "The METV is the same like DTV only shorter . . . . now you have disqualified yourself. Comparing the DTV to a METV, when for aDTV you need proof of 500,000 THB funds, and all the documentation that needs to be uploaded for a DTV, beats the 20,000 THB you have to show for the METV, by lengths. You are comparing a Rolls Royce with a Honda Civic

Siggi Tirak you can't use a METV for 6-7 months in Thailand, and shortly thereafter (3-4 months later) enter visa-exempt or on a single entry tourist visa . You will be denied entry for sure.

I suspect you will be rejected. It’s in your file now. I’ve been told the same but I don’t have the means to apply for a long term visa.

Any suggestions for agency led border runs?

PositiveAvocado3358 depends on where you are. It's a long country. But with it Cambodia border closure, air makes the most sense from Bangkok unless you want to spend 15-20 hours in a van.

PositiveAvocado3358 entering by Nong Khai, I recommend to stay in Vientiane for 2-3 days before re-entering Thailand on your still valid METV. Should not be a problem. But keep in mind - in hindsight and in the full spectre of your recent one-year period of travel history, it doesn't make much difference if you entered visa-exempt or on a tourist visa. Touristic entries are still touristic entries, and anyone who is staying in Thailand for longer than 180 days within a one-year period on touristic entries, cannot claim being a "real tourist". Real tourists do not live in Thailand longterm or longer than for short holidays. You should avoid getting "flagged" in the Immigration Central Computer for "misuse of the touristic visa system", as this could lead to repercussions even on a DTV, because a DTV technically also is a tourist visa type

If you have metv you should be ok. This is for people who travel longer in Asia

METV is still a tourist entry. This person was specifically told they've spent too much time in Thailand as a tourist. A tourist visa will not protect you from being denied entry when immigration has determined you've spent too much time in Thailand as a tourist.

which defeats the object of obtaining the METV .

if you cannot qualify for a long term visa, that means you're not welcome. Just because you want to live somewhere, doesn't mean you have the right to do so.

the METV is for people that will be traveling around SE Asia and using Thailand as their home base. It's not meant for trying to live in Thailand without a long term visa.

I got knocked back with 1 jailed and sent home. I was with my father too who is rather affluent and would qualify for the rich persons visa (global wealthy citizen) is it called? I would be careful. maybe look at an ED visa.

Louis Harle "maybe look at an ED visa." . . . . . worst thing to do. The ED visa is the most misused Thai visa. Imigration has a very sharp eye on it

Nongnuch Kamdee I never had a problem. 1 is ok if you start using them back to back and abuse it, eg can't speak a word of Thai after 3 years of studying then you might have a problem. But if you do what you say, and use a reputable school you shouldn't have a problem.

If you are concerned, do a border bounce with an agency or arrange fast track past immigration with agent.

Brandon ************

Why bother even risking it? Just use a land border bounce agency to drive you to the border an ensure you get out and back in without issues, or utilize a "safe entry" agent for an airport entry to ensure you are allowed back in without any questions.
