Tourist Visa advice.

Greetings! The wife and I are hoping to visit Thailand a lot during winter months. After trying to figure out what works for us best personally based on our current plans, we are thinking just 2 months at a time on tourist visas .

Something akin to Oct-Nov single entry tourist visa and then returning Jan - Feb (possibly doing a 30 day extension into March) tourist visa.

I assume it makes the most sense to do single entry visa and so I ask, how often can you apply for and be granted a single entry tourist visa? Will they start frown upon a 2x or possible 3x a year entry into the country on single entry tourist visas ? (more likely 2x a year) and doing <2 months on one and possible < 3 months on a another (with extension ) ?

TY for any advice!

(We are basically looking to snow bird from Alaska and are looking for a good method to just be in the country during the winter months)
Answer summary
The user is seeking advice about the feasibility of obtaining single entry tourist visas for multiple trips to Thailand during winter months. The discussion emphasizes that while Thai Embassies do not impose hard limits on the number of single entry tourist visas (SETV) issued, applying for more than two per year may raise questions about intentions to live in Thailand. Various user comments suggest that two entries per year are generally acceptable, especially if the individual can demonstrate a genuine travel pattern. Alternatives like the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) are also explored as a more convenient option.

This is a classic "snowbird" travel pattern, and doing this 2 times a year for 2–3 months each time is generally safe and very doable, but there are strict boundaries you need to know to avoid problems at the border.

Here is the direct, professional breakdown for your winter plans:

How often can you apply? Thai Embassies and Consulates do not have a hard legal limit on Single-Entry Tourist Visas (TR), but as a general rule of thumb, getting 2 consecutive tourist visas per calendar year is perfectly fine. Once you hit 3 or more in a short period, immigration officers at the airport may start questioning whether you are trying to live in Thailand illegally without a proper long-term visa.

Will they frown upon your plan? If you are only entering 2 times a year (e.g., Oct-Nov, then Jan-Feb) and spending the rest of the year back home in Alaska, immigration will not look down on you. They can see your travel history shows you are a genuine seasonal tourist escaping the winter, not someone working illegally or abusing the system.

A Better Alternative to Consider: Since you want to enter multiple times during the winter, look into the Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (METV). Applied for while you are still home in the US, it is valid for 6 months and allows unlimited entries of up to 60 days per entry. This completely saves you from having to apply for two separate visas or sitting in immigration lines for extensions while you are in Thailand.

Crucial Reminder: No matter which visa you choose, remember that the online Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) registration is now mandatory and must be completed within 3 days before each flight into the country.

Your snowbird plan is excellent. Just stick to 2 entries max per winter season on tourist visas, or grab the METV for total peace of mind. Safe travels from Alaska! 🌹

The number of entries allowed is not determined by the type of visa, but by a separate Entry Permit. There are single and multiple entry permits, each type with a different price.

You can be issued with as many tourist visas as the consulate you apply at will issue, however having a visa is does not guarantee you will be allowed to enter. Two entries per annum should be fine but you mention the possibility of a third entry which could be problematic if you've already spent 150 days or more inside Thailand, in which case it might be easier just to go with retirement visas. The Non-OA visa might be the most suitable as it doesn't require a Thai bank account but does require insurance, medical and police checks

Wes Howard keep in mind immigration makes their determination, not on what is written, but on what the situation dictates. There are guidelines, but there are exceptions. Lots of people, for that length of time, and longer, base out of Thailand, visiting other countries also, and not just long enough to let back in. From Bangkok you can go anywhere in South East Asia, and all of Thailand, in just a few hours, and cheaply. Spend two-three weeks in a Thai location, then a week, or two out of Thailand, then return to a different location in Thailand for three-four weeks, then visit another country for another week, or two. By setting a pattern of being an actual tourist, you can continue doing that for quite a few years, every Winter in Alaska. When they make a determination you are trying to live here long term on tourist entries, and taking the 30 day extension sets off one of those red flags, they can stop you for further investigation, and even rejection, even if you buy another tourist visa on the website.

I do the Jan-Mar stay and get the SETV with a 30 day extension. I'm pretty sure there is no problem doing this twice a calendar year, but as you seem to want to do this all within a 6 month period, the METV could work better.

If over 50, one of the retirement Visas may be even better.

OP
I think 2 single entry visas does end up costing a lot less than a multi entry tourist visa . (plus im multiplying all this x2 I ASSUME???) one for me and one for the wife . so that makes the multi entry visa be a little more painful financially (money saved, money earned and all that)

You also don't need to be in your home country to do an SETV, only you may have to deal with delay to get approval of second - I don't know if you can get two without having been in Thailand for one of them.

With the METV, you can come and go as you please for the 6 month period. With either, you can extend 30 days after the 60 days you get stamp in for. I don't know the flight details for the METV, so that may also be a factor.

Also note that if only doing 2 months, A Visa Exempt (assuming it goes back to 30 days) plus an extension would give you that amount.

Bob Wolf I think the OP was thinking of applying for a second SETV after exiting using the first (you cannot have two live visas anyway as you said)
