What options do I have to extend my ED visa in Thailand before my flight home?

Hello all,

I need some advice in regards to my ED Visa - I have just completed my final extension at immigration and they have only approved my stay until the 2nd of December (I thought I’d be approved until 7th of December i.e. 1 year after I entered Thailand on my initial ED Visa - like a previous ED Visa I’ve had). Immigration have been provided with a letter from my school confirming the class started on 16 Dec 2017 to and ends on 11 Nov 2018.

As I fly out to my home country (New Zealand) on the 6th of December I need to make sure I have a valid visa until then - I don't want to overstay my current visa as I will be applying for a METV when I return to my home country (and I don’t want to give the Embassy a reason to decline my METV).

I am considering the following 2 options:

* Option 1: Around say the 1st of December go in to immigration and apply for a 30 day extension of my ED Visa and pay 1,900 baht - from reading previous posts my understanding is that immigration will decline this and likely give me 7 days to exit Thailand?

* Option 2: Probably in late November obtain a letter from the school confirming I have completed my course , the next day cross the border (probably at Mae Sai) and re-enter Thailand on the same day and obtain a 30 day visa exempt, then the following day go into immigration and take in the letter from the school to cancel my existing ED Visa (and complete a TM30 as I live in Chiang Mai)

Can anyone see any issues with the above options? Any advice would be appreciated TIA.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on their ED visa situation, where their extension ends on December 2, while they need to stay until December 6 before flying home. They consider two options: applying for a 30-day extension, which might be denied, or leaving the country and re-entering on a visa-exempt basis. Community responses suggest that option two may be more viable, emphasizing the need to cancel the existing visa extension before re-entry.

I am.surprised that your extension does not end in Nov, on your last day of classes.

At least studying thai in Bangkok (you can ONLY get 15-16 months out of TWO ED visas and extensions) it doesn't matter when your class is over, it matters how long you've been on the ED visa/extensions.

You get one 90 day ED visa and you can extend that for about 9 more months giving you a year on it total.

Then you leave the country to get another 90 day ED visa and you can extend that for about another 3 months total. Then you've studied thai as long as you can.

There is no MOE testing etc, you get a year and then another 6 months and you're done.

That's what the group is for (y) knowledge IS power (especially when it comes to visa/extension stuff for this country) :)

Option 2 is a better way BUT I'd go to the immigration office and cancel your extension of stay BEFORE you bounce out and back in at Mae Sai.

There are reports that people were denied exiting the country on ED visa extensions (even ones that were expiring that day) because they didn't go to the immigration office and cancel them correctly

I would, take a paper from my school stating my last day of study is the day I want to bounce out and back in at the Mae Sai border. I would go to the immigration office the week before that and cancel the current extension and they will give you a new stamp dated until the date on the letter. Then on that date you just bounce out and back in to get your 30 day visa exempt entry (providing you don't have TWO 30 day visa exempt entries by land so far this year ;) )

OR that's what I would do, :P

There is NO 30 day extension available on an ED visa. You apply for a 90 day one OR you apply for an extension get it denied and get a 7 day get out of thailand stamp instead for 1900baht
