Hello everyone! I need some help, please.

German passport holder coming to Thailand to stay 20 days (until 14/Jan) - he gets the 30 days visa-exempt. He will come back to Thailand again 1st of Feb and travel around SEA for 3 months (90 days, until the end of April) having Thailand as a base.

Now, what we need to know: When he comes back to Thailand for the 2nd time (1st Feb), will they count it from the remaining 10 days of the 1st visa-exempt? Can he get out and then back again, and get a 2nd or even 3rd visa-exempt?

He won't spend 30 days straight in Thailand, he will be in and out few times during these 3 months, does he need to get a 60 days visa previously and then an extension of tourism ? What is the best way to proceed, please?

Is this information correct: "foreigners who enter Thailand under this Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme may re-enter and stay in Thailand for a cumulative duration of stay of not exceeding 90 days within any 6-month period from the date of first entry"?

Thank you so much in advance. :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
A German passport holder can enter Thailand under the visa-exempt scheme, receiving 30 days of stay each time. Upon returning on 1st Feb, the upcoming stay is treated as a new entry, giving another 30 days, irrespective of prior days used. However, while in and out over three months, excessive entries might raise questions from immigration. A Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) could be an alternative for frequent entries, but it’s not a requirement. Claims about a 90-day limit within a 6-month period under the Tourist Visa Exemption are inaccurate.

Thank you so much for the information! :))) 🙏 By any chance do you have more information about the METV? I read somewhere that they didn't have such visa anymore...

the METV is a visa you BUY from the thai consulate in your country before you come here,

it's good for 6 months from the date it's issued,

it's good for unlimited entries during that time of 60 days each,

and

if you work the exit/re-enter part correctly you can get almost 9 months of stay out of that visa

GO to the website of the thai consulate in your country and read the requirements.

You cannot get it in S/E Asia from any thai consulate, only from the thai consulate in your country before you come here

, METV was suspended during Covid, but is now being issued at the embassy/consulate in your home country or country where you have legal residence.

Check the website of the embassy/consulate in Germany. You need to check the exact consulate that covers your address for detailed requirements.

Here is a visa information page in Berlin as an example.

German passport is eligible for visa-exempt entry every time entering Thailand without a visa for tourism purposes. Visa-exempt entry by land is limited twice per calendar year. There is no written rule about the limit of the number on entering by air or the total number of days of stay for tourism purposes. But eventually, you might be questioned at the entry point if you enter Thailand on visa-exempt "too often (in the eyes of immigration officers)".

Q. will they count it from the remaining 10 days of the 1st visa-exempt?

-> No. Every visa-exempt entry for German passport holders is 30 days.

Q. Can he get out and then back again, and get a 2nd or even 3rd visa-exempt?

-> Technically, yes.

Q. does he need to get a 60 days visa previously and then an extension of tourism ?

-> Basically, he doesn't need any tourist visa. BUT, getting a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa might be a possible option if he wants to enter/leave Thailand that often. The decision is in his own hands.

This group doesn't allow "what's the best option?"-type questions because "the best" varies too widely depending on individual priority, preference, and conditions.

Q. Is this information correct: "foreigners who enter Thailand under this Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme may re-enter and stay in Thailand for a cumulative duration of stay of not exceeding 90 days within any 6-month period from the date of first entry"?

-> No, it's not correct visa-wise.
