Why is it difficult to open a Thai bank account on a DTV visa, and what can I do?

Hi everyone,

A very Happy New Year to you and your Family.

I’ve been on a DTV visa for two months, and I’ve visited almost all the banks in Bangkok, including Kasikorn Bank, Bangkok Bank, and several others. I’ve even tried different branches in less touristy areas, but no one is willing to open a bank account for me.

This makes it very difficult to pay rent and utility bills every month. I would greatly appreciate any advice or leads that could help.

Thank you in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the challenges faced by an expat on a DTV (Digital Nomad) visa while trying to open a bank account in Thailand. Despite visiting multiple banks in Bangkok, the author has been unable to secure an account, which complicates managing monthly expenses like rent and utilities. Community responses highlight that banks in Thailand prefer clients with long-term visas and stable financial backgrounds. Suggestions include seeking the assistance of agents who specialize in helping expats open accounts, particularly in tourist-heavy areas, and advice to try specific banks or using financial services like Wise and Revolut for transactions. Some comments indicate a potential recent shift in bank policy affecting account openings for tourists.

Do you have a long term rental contract or a property, and a certificate of residence from the immigration office ?

This is not complicated folks. Get an agent. Get it done. Enjoy your 5 years

Bangkok Bank and telling them how much you'll deposit is basically your best shot without an agency.

As a new member, use the search function, and you would have known, it is close to impossibel to open a Thai bankaccount on DTV.
Henrik *****
You need to have a proper long term visa ( DTV is tourist ), been having a permanent Thai adress for at least 3 months, to be even considered to get a Thai bankaccount.

So DTV is not eligable for a Thai bankaccount.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

Also tried multiple times in touristy Phuket Central. I got declined every time. The staff said they were able to open before, but currently its a not allowed due to new update from Bank Of Thailand. Not sure if its true, didn't believe it.

You will need to pay a agent $7000 baht to open a account - DTV is just a tourist visa
Sofia ***********
@Werner ***********
please do you have a contact of agent with 7k? I found only for 15k

Tik tok service in Pattaya -5000 for open account

@Sofia **********
there is a lot off competition between agents. Google and call them 7k is enoughh, 15k over paying. For examen opening bank account in retirement visa is 5k.
Stefan ******
You use the wrong strategy. Try only BKK bank and in super touristy/foreigner heavy areas

Going to Bangkok Bank HQ branch in Silom has worked for some

@Greg *******
yes Bangkok bank HQ and tell them you want to deposit a considerable amount of money.

Their banking app is perfect, you will not regret, everywhere pay by scan is so efficient. Paying rent can be scheduled
Andy **********
There are agents in Pattaya, that can assist with opening a bank account.

My landlord helped me open one at Krungsri.

Exactly. Do they need some double secret handshake?

Hey Everyone! So I finally got TTB bank to give me a savings bank account after visiting 8 different banks. I had to give them a photocopy of my passport, my DTV visa, an official ID from my birth country (I used my international driver's licence) and a photocopy of the registration of my landlord owning my rental apartment with her signature, and they gave me it on the spot, It's free. I went to TTB Bank at Big C Express On Nut.

Wise and Revolut are also good options with reasonable fees to transfer money for paying rent etc in foreign countries.
Markus ********
@Klaus ********
Yes, but unfortunately, Wise often does not use my name as the sender and the Intended purpose cannot always be considered on the credit transfer. This can make it more difficult for the recipient to recognise the payment.
Peter **********
Use an agent in Pattaya. If under 50 u may also need to pay for health insurance to get the bank account.

Should cost around 5k.
Zain ******
I saw a bunch of posts where you need to basically pay an agent a "fee" to open an account for you....but those come with some risks as they can be closed without notice....use the search feature....generally speaking, you cannot open a bank account with a DTV visa
Andi ***********
@Zain *****
1000s of accounts are opened with agents, if large numbers of those accounts were being closed without notice we would know about it. A bank can close an account without notice regardless if it is opened by an agent or not.
Marc **********
@Andi **********
I would think it would be useful for a bank to keep an account open especially with hundreds of thousands of baht in it ;)

Btw...are transfers into Bangkok Bank or any Thai bank taxed now?

I just moved a large amount in using Wise from a USA bank and noticed a tax line item ..looks about 3%.
Andi ***********
@Marc *********
I have not heard of tax with Wise transfers. They took 3 % off or was it an alert to a potential tax payment with the Thai govt? I have not received that alert with GBP to THB with Wise but not huge amounts transferred
Marc **********
@Andi **********
Wise took their fee during the transfer.

This was a line item on my bank statement about a week after and only .3%. .....of that amount but not sure related. Sorry I wrote 3% earlier by mistake.
Andi ***********
@Marc *********
Ok, You should ask Wise what that .3 % fee is. Any tax you are required to pay on transfers comes from yourself. Wise can take a payment though for tax they are legally required to pay for transfers.
Marc **********
@Andi **********
but the tax was in my Bangkok Bank statement. I will email them
Andi ***********
@Marc *********
So Bangkok Bank may have taxed the transfer ?

I've never seen anyone's account being closed after an agent opened it. Please show any examples where you have seen this

It seems to be increasingly difficult to open a bank account on tourist type visas. You may need to find an agent to help you
