My yearly contract came to an end so my visa was up, I cancelled my work permit and went to immigration and got 2 months extension based on having children and waiting for my new job to start, immigration told me get all your paperwork in order and work permit and come back before the extension expires and they will further extend my visa to working again, (hope this make sense,) anyway applied for work permit and got a call today saying they can't give me a work permit because of the extension on my non B for visiting my kids, can anybody tell me if this is correct or not,,, why would they tell me I can then tell me I have to leave the country to obtain a new non B

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual is facing issues with obtaining a work permit after their yearly contract ended and they received a 2-month extension to stay in Thailand based on having children. Although immigration initially indicated they could eventually extend the visa to a working status, new information from the labor office suggests that a work permit cannot be granted while on an extension to visit family. This situation raises questions about the consistency of immigration advice and the rules governing the non B visa and its extensions.

You need to apply business visa again , do company and apply for work permit

But I've had friends who have done the same thing, school contract finished, extension of stay based on marriage or kids, then before extension expires take all your new paperwork relating to new school to labour, get new work permit go to immigration get the extension changed back to working related status

The 1 year Extension of Stay based on marriage or having children is not the same (both need to meet financial requirements) as your 60 days Extension of Stay to visit your family without financial requirements.

NO, it is not a Non B visa, you're in the country using an Extension Of Stay to visit your family. You're Non B visa is nothing more than a memory in your passport.

Yes correct, but when I asked immigration about this the first time they said no problem, today the labour office called them and explained about the extension and immigration told them I have to leave the country, which makes no sense to me, as it's still a non B visa

Assume the call today was from Ministry of Labor, they can not give you the WP when you're on Extension of Stay to visit family. Different office, different rules.
