Denied bank accounts in Thailand, what's going on?

Interesting development on Friday. Went to Kalasin Immigration for paperwork for drivers license. It came up in conversation that I had been denied at several banks to open a bank account. Head of Immigration had another look at my 5yr DTV and got quiet angry. He said no, this is a good visa. He got a pen and circled the 5 year part of the visa, wrote his phone number and name on the bottom and said, if the bank refuses tell them to call me 😃. Looking forward to going to a bank tomorrow and see how it all plays out. Should be good for a laugh.
Answer summary
The post discusses an expat's experience with attempting to open a bank account in Thailand with a DTV (Digital Nomad Visa). Despite a senior immigration officer offering assistance due to confusion over visa validity, the expat faces systematic issues common among DTV holders, who are often perceived as tourist visa holders and thus encounter bank policies that deny them account opening. The comments reflect varying personal experiences and insights regarding banking regulations in Thailand, emphasizing the bureaucratic challenges and inconsistencies in the treatment of DTV holders.

Don't worry. Some of banks makes so many problems even I'm legally working for years and have few other bank accounts here wirh credit card, thai stock market account. They ask for rental agreement, house book from owner. I told them whatever, no point to keep money with them if they don't want it ;)

These situations are common in this country. Different departments enforce their own policies and regulations, leading to many ridiculous and even ironic situations. For example, I purchased insurance as a DTV holder. However, when it came time to claim compensation, I could only receive an AC cheque, which means I needed a bank account to deposit the cheque. In reality, DTV users don't have bank accounts. This is the rule gap between different sectors. Each department only cares about its own affairs and doesn't care about the regulations of other departments. And you only realize how troublesome it is when you actually encounter it.

I've almost given up on the constant BS here. You can easily open a Thai bank account with Thai currency and a Card, and prompt pay in a Thai financial institution and have essentially exactly what you all say you cannot. It was literally launched 1st June!!!!

your attitude is rude & unnecessary. Since you keep being rude to everyone while simultaneously asking more questions you could easy Google or read from others here: wise is not a bank account. It does not function like a bank or offfer services that a Thai bank would offer. For example the popular online shopping app Shopee requires a Thai bank account or a Thai bank cards. cards like Revolute & Wise are considered foreign banks therefore you can’t immediately add a UK or U.S. Visa card to Shopee until a trust level is made eventually with COD payments. YouTube Premium is another online platform that commonly requires a Thai bank card to setup in Thailand. A foreign bank card (such as wise -sent to a customer in Thailand) does not work for Thai prices of YouTube premium. Wise does not solve every problem others may have. Please get off your high horse .

and I was waiting for some ahole to point out all the things someone with a Thai bank account doesn't need. So if you open a monzo, chase, etc etc In other places would you say you have not got a bank account. Boohoo it's so sad for you. The account is a bank account. It has all the features an expat in Thailand would need and does need. Opening an account in a mature Thai bank would not offer any more protection or services or features. So your point is what exactly? It's not a bank account as it's not a real bank? Yet it is a bank account isn't it. Go and moan somewhere else. Maybe come back in a few months and see how many haven't opened this bank account. Not easily pleased are you. Let focus on the word bank. Banker.

Revolut and Wise are both financial technology companies that provide services such as currency exchange, international transfers, payment cards, and multi-currency accounts, making them function similarly to bank accounts for many everyday transactions. In Thailand, neither company is licensed as a Thai commercial bank, so they do not fall into the same legal category as institutions such as Bangkok Bank or Kasikornbank that accept deposits and make loans under Thai banking law. Although both companies are regulated financial institutions and may partner with banks or safeguard customer funds through regulated arrangements, they are considered payment and financial services providers rather than Thai banks.
Dan *********
Dan *********
@Ash***
Wise is approved to operate in Thailand and is regulated by Thai authorities, including permissions related to payment and money-transfer services, but it is not licensed as a commercial bank. A commercial bank can accept deposits as a bank, lend money from those deposits, and operate under Thailand’s banking laws, whereas Wise primarily provides payment, foreign exchange, and money-transfer services. Even though Wise allows users to hold and transfer Thai baht, those services do not by themselves make it a bank. Customer funds are generally safeguarded under financial-services regulations and banking partnerships rather than being traditional bank deposits held at Wise as a Thai bank. Therefore, Wise is a regulated financial technology and payments company in Thailand, but not a licensed Thai bank like Bangkok Bank or Kasikornbank.

no it changed on 17th march and was launched on 1st June but of course we'd rather all moan than just open the fooking account. Wise Account Thailand is now FULL BOT and Ministry of Commerce approved for THB and Multi Currency and Prompt Pay and a Debit Card. I posted the requirements earlier but everyone is so hell bent in saying its not possible. Well it has been possible to open a fully compliant account in Thailand for over a week with ALL the facilities EVERY other bank in Thailand has....

I read the policies of a couple of banks…. It clearly states they will not open accounts for tourist visas. It would not matter if immigration says you can, the bank policy could be different.

Seems like every day this question comes up, over and over… so…

Question: why is it so important to have a bank account in Thiland? If you on a DTV, all income comes from sources outside of Thiland. You can keep your money in a bank, or investment account in which you would likely make more interest. You can use Wise to spend in Thailand for just about everything, I have been doing it for years, and likely have less hassle to deal with in terms of taxes and other stuff.

So help us understand the burning desire to have a Thai bank account?

Wake up a DTV is not a long term visa you have no chance whatsoever.

Jason *********
Jason *********
Yeah… good luck with that.

After quite a bit of research and several failed attempts myself, I’ve come to believe that many of the DTV holders who successfully opened Thai bank accounts simply got lucky with a particular branch, manager, or timing.

To be clear, there is no Thai law that explicitly prohibits a DTV holder from opening a bank account. Under Thailand’s anti-money laundering and Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations, banks are required to verify a customer’s identity, visa status, source of funds, and residency information. While the Bank of Thailand establishes the regulatory framework, individual banks are allowed to set their own account-opening policies and risk criteria.

The problem is that many banks currently view the DTV differently from traditional long-stay visas. In practice, a lot of branches prefer to open accounts for foreigners holding visa categories they readily associate with long-term residence in Thailand, such as a Non-Immigrant B visa with a work permit, a retirement visa, a marriage visa, an LTR visa, or a Thailand Privilege visa.

I’ve personally tried three separate times at different branches. I even brought my Thai girlfriend with me to eliminate any language barriers—she’s highly professional and translated everything perfectly, and I speak some Thai myself. Every time the answer was essentially the same: they wanted to see a work permit, retirement visa, marriage visa, or another visa category that their compliance department considers suitable for banking. None of them were willing to accept the DTV on its own.

What makes the situation even more confusing is that banking policies often seem to vary by branch. You’ll hear stories of someone successfully opening an account at one branch, while another branch of the exact same bank rejects a DTV holder the next day. That’s why there are occasional success stories online. My personal opinion is that those people either encountered a branch that interpreted the policy more flexibly, used additional supporting documentation that wasn’t mentioned in their post, or applied during a period when the bank itself was still figuring out how it wanted to handle DTV applicants.

The reality is that Thai banks have become increasingly cautious in recent years due to tighter compliance requirements, fraud prevention efforts, and anti-money laundering regulations. Because of that, front-line staff often default to the safest answer when dealing with a visa category that doesn’t fit neatly into their established procedures.

So while opening a Thai bank account on a DTV visa is not technically impossible, I wouldn’t assume it’s easy or routine. Based on my own experience and the experiences of many others, if you walk into a branch today with nothing more than a DTV visa, you should be prepared for a very real possibility of being turned away.
Max *************
Max *************
Jason Couture It seems you have missed the fact that the DTV is officially a tourist visa. Every bank has the right to deny opening accounts, because of bank policies. There are no laws saying otherwise. But, as you said, it's just pure luck when some people successfully managed to open a bank account while on a DTV.

For all the people suggesting that you cannot have a bank account on a tourist visa or that you must have a visa that’s valid for one year or longer; that’s incorrect.

It’s not a policy nor has it ever been.

It’s like most of the r”ules” in Thailand. It started as a guideline and morphed.

It was a guideline from the BOT to scrutinize certain account types and accounts held by certain categories of people.

Really they just wanted heads/numbers.

This all started because the BOT was pressured by the government when that YouTube video exposing the Thai bank’s involvement in laundering Chinese crime money (mostly from scam call centers in Laos and Berma) went viral.

Naturally the banks (and the government) weren’t going to do anything that would actually affect change or affect the real criminals. So instead they just looked for dead, empty and inactive accounts that were opened with agents and closed them.

Then they moved on to active accounts with low balances etc. till they had enough names and numbers to appease the BOT and the government.

Who themselves were just looking to appease the international community to get the spotlight off their corruption.

It will change when the rest of the world stops paying attention and enough time passes.

Then there will be the typical hurdle of dealing with frontline staff that don’t know law/policy/rules but only think they do because they were told X by whoever trains them etc.

These threads are always fun 🤣

1. Under the law banks shouldn’t be opening accounts anymore for people on tourist visas which includes DTV’s;

2. Some still do, they shouldn’t, they could be closed at a whim down the line but this is Thailand;

3. Many have accounts that they opened on tourist visas, I mean some of us opened them on visa exempts in times past, but they are always at risk of closure;

4. Thai Elite (Privilege) is technically a tourist visa but is subject to a much more in depth review before issue (5 agencies review you in a way they don’t really even do for a work/business visa). This creates one of the privileges, you can legally open an account - it’s guaranteed under the visa.

Welcome to Thailand 🇹🇭:)

Luckily, Thai immigration supported me because they could have kicked me out of Thailand in this endless circle of "you don't have a work permit we cannot renew your visa".

I'm married here, with a company here, then some of them decided that i had to put 1 more millions baht to my thai company capital because i was married BUT with a "parent visa" instead of a "married visa". Whereas i have all the document proving that i'm married !

But what's such a big deal about opening a bank account by foreigners (not even here but in many other countries), why are they so strict about it...!? I would have thought it's in their benefit to have foreigners brining in money and put in their banks..., if no activity and hassle then close it...!?

If worried about unsavoury stuff, scam, money laundering etc. , then that is an unrelated problem I think, with different solution, for example request a home bank reference etc. ...! 🤔

I researched this before but can't find my notes. Basically, to open an account while under a DTV, the bank requires an Institutional or Personal Guarantor to sign a formal Letter of Certification / Guarantee (an internal bank document). The bank accepts two types of vouchers:

A Reputable Thai Citizen / Established Client: A Thai national who holds a prominent or long-standing relationship (usually a premier or business account) at that specific branch.

An Approved Thai Institution: A certified entity registered with the government that is directly tied to your stay, such as a licensed Muay Thai gym, a culinary school, or a medical institution where you are registered under the "Soft Power" DTV category.

Yep, most will argue because it is impossible because (A) They were knocked back or (B) they read it on facebook. I may be a little unique for a DTV holder because I own property, I am married 10+ years to a Thai and I remit foreign income and pay Thai Tax. My wife and I went to Kasikorn together, took every document we could , all translated where possible and the bank was more than happy I meet their criteria to hold an account and happy to oblige. But evidently it's everything from illegal or immoral to do so. As my mum always said never try to have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent 🤣

They have the full right to turn you away and you or the immigration officer has no right to ask them to call him and they have the full right to say ( No. We won't call anyone )

Plus... Immigration has no authority on them... they are thai... why would they worry

Plus... immigration has no power to change the instructions of B.O.T

Which decided ( No Bank account to DTV holder )

Last... for the banks your visa is not 5 years... it is the stamp they consider which is 180 days ( not 5 years stamp )

So it is

1- not a long term visa

2- it is not a non Immigrant visa

3- it is a special type of visa considers as tourist and tourist are not allowed to get a bank account with short term stamp like that.

So... update us tomorrow about this funny joke.. we are looking forward to hear about it

No I don't think so, in fact most DTV holders probably do not own property or a car and are not married to a Thai. In fact I agreed with most of what you first wrote except this one little sentence " instructions of B.O.T Which decided ( No Bank account to DTV holder )." This is just wrong there was no instructions to the banks based on type of visa, any rejection based on visa alone is the policy of an individual bank and is their way of interpreting the regulations.
BrightE********
BrightE********
@Mick ****
do you think all the DTV holders own a propon Thailand?

Owning a property in Thailand is almost the only exception that allows you as a DTV to hold an account

That is a special case

Here we talk about the majority of the DTV holders and i am telling you that most of them even don't have 500,000 in their account at the moment they are holding the visa now

They can't buy a Pickup truck financially.

So , forget about the condition of own a property
Mick *****
Mick *****
I was rejected by Bangkok Bank - their policy is a blanket exclusion. However I I have opened both a passbook account and a credit card with Kasikorn even though I am on a DTV. No agents no dodgy procedures just by walking into a branch with enough paperwork to meet their requirements. Owning property and a 12 year marriage to a Thai citizen definitely helped. It is difficult but not impossible certainly not against the BOT regulations. But hey if you read it on Facebook it must be true.
