What should expats know about phone registration and banking rules in Thailand?

A little Thai story. So, I hear that the Thai government has issued an edict to say that if people are scammed, then the banks will pay. One bank, my bank, promptly panics and tries to tighten up its system. Suddenly, loads of people - foreigners - who have the banking app (whatever that is) are being cut off because their phone details do not match their bank details. Now I, do not have the banking app (whatever that is), but when I was last in my bank, I asked about the problems and requested advice. Make sure your phone is registered to you was the advice. So today I go to the phone people AIS, and say "who is the phone registered to"? "Your wife", say they. OK, can I get it put into my name? "Yes, but not on this package. This is 10GB at 700+baht, and foreigner is only allowed to pay less than 500 baht, so you can only have 5GB package." "OK, says I, I'm more interested in getting my phone put into my name, so I have no problems with the bank. "Ok, says she, that can be done but you can only have 5GB, but we do have another package which gives you 10GB for 499 baht. Do you want that?" "Err, yes, whatever." So somehow, I've ended up with the phone in my name, paying 200 baht less than I was before for the same 10GB. Complete mystery to me, but I do love Thailand.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent changes in Thai banking regulations have caused confusion for foreigners living in the country. Due to a new edict aimed at combating scams, banks are tightening security, which has resulted in many expats being locked out of their banking apps if their registered phone details do not match their accounts. One user shared their experience of switching their mobile phone account to their name to avoid banking issues, leading to unexpected savings on their plan. The discussion highlights various mobile service packages used by expats and the challenges they face navigating Thai banking requirements.

I use finn mobile. Hard to beat their prices for unlimited data at 20mbps + calls

I understand but generally I just go with the flow. I do question things occasionally but I have found that it is usually a lot more irritating to me and never really gives me the answer I'm looking for.

Not something that many guys could do I think. But I also think that many guys could not tolerate Thailand for very long. Not that it needs to be tolerated in my opinion, but for some.... Yeah. And of course where in Thailand are we talking about? I found now after living in several different areas that each has its own charms and quirks.... But I love it here.

You don't know what a bank app is? How can you even do banking without one nowadays when Thai banks are increasingly removing online access so you can sign into your account via the app? For example, SCB no longer has an online banking website. You must use the app for all online payments, reports, transfers, etc.

Bob *********
@Colin *******
says the guy that then proceeds to rage bait. Why would you call something bullshit unless you know for a fact that it is. And if you don't know for a fact then why don't you just not say anything? I mean it would be better for everyone including you. Have a good day.

Went to true move to get service certificate letter as my scb app was blocked.....absolutely free the service staff (truemove) taught me to use the true app to request for certificate and take SS ...the SS was enough to unblocked the app when I present it to the bank counter I've heard ppl paying 100baht for the cert....

Try the 50gb a month AIS promotion for 2200b a year..I never use it up but do use Wifi around the house, coffee shops, ect.
Mark *****
I have unlimited data/internet with AIS 100฿ month, PAYG only 2MB download suits me.
Max *************
@Mark ****
But with a very low speed.
Mark *****
@M**
, it's okay I can watch YouTube anywhere without buffing which I'm happy with.

I had the same package with AIS for 6 years, I been offered to upgrade my speed to 4MB for a extra 50฿ I declined
Max *************
@Mark ****
You are lucky because YouTube isn't very picky when it comes to speed. It just automatically lowers the resolution. A consistent 2Mbps works fine, but you can never watch anything streamed. I can watch everything,TV-shows and movies on my Android box,but I need at least a consistent 7-8Mbps to avoid buffering,but my speed is normally way faster.
Maksym ***********
i use DTAC with package 699 baht a year with 5Gb each month... 😅
Max *************
@Maksym **********
5GB per month? That's like 2,5 day for me. My limit at NT is 200GB/month.You can't use your phone very much. According to my phone, I'm using about 140GB/month.
Maksym ***********
@Max ************
but the author said about 10 gb. And I use phone with wifi - 60-100 gb per month 🤷
Max *************
@Maksym **********
You did say 5GB/month. We're talking about the total amount of data you're using/month, and I know for sure the speed you're paying for is not very fast.
Maksym ***********
@Max ************
ok, if you know better that is not max speed as defined in package, then ok 🤷

And I said about mobile traffic, discussed in topic, not home internet or something else.
Max *************
@Maksym **********
The total amount of mobile data is every mb you're using.You obviously don't know what "max speed" means. It's the fastest speed the cell tower can deliver every given second. Meaning,if you're in an area with many users,the speed goes down. This normally happens in the evening when people starts watching movies and TV and uses their phones as hot spots.You'll almost never reach the official "Max speed". This is how it works and nothing to argue about.
David *******
Change to True. I've got an 899 package with them in my name
Ian *******
I am with AIS and pay more than 3000 bhat for 1 year unlimited internet on my phone registered to my name. The phone plan is pretty paid with internet package on top called mao mao I think, cannot access AIS to verify.
Paul *********
@Ian ******
i am looking to move to that plan, download speed is only 6 Mbps but that is sufficient for most things. Cost goes up a lot with 5g Max speed.
Sylvia ********
They have new promotions constantly rolling so probably you struck lucky. Some banks as you mention have put limits on transfers and some stop use of apps if over 70. Apparently many people in that age group are vulnerable to scams, especially locals so sadly a new regulation
Jay ********
Only in Thailand
Colin **********
I pay 399thb with AIS for 30gb and 400mins
Max *************
@Colin *********
I'm on a 6 months subscription max speed no limit with NT for 619 baht.It should have expired June 30,but it's still alive. I have expected it to die every day in July,but no. Go figure. 👍
