TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking suggestions for kid-friendly and inexpensive locations to change their visa while traveling with five young children, starting from Northern Thailand. Responses highlight the Thai consulate in Vientiane, Laos, as a suitable option due to its accessibility and user-friendliness. There's also discussion about different visa types, including the Non-O visa for volunteering, and considerations regarding turnaround times for visa processing. Other locations mentioned include the potential for travel to Vietnam or Singapore, though Singapore is noted to be quite expensive.

Cool thanks for that!! Is it always a 2 day turn around time for visas? Or should we allow for longer? The foundation we are volunteering with have done heaps of these applications so confident we will have all we need

most consulates you apply in the morning one day and you pick up your passport with the visa in it the afternoon of the next day.

Keep in mind the consulate closures Monday next week ;)

As long as the place you're volunteering for has given you the correct documentation almost any nearby consulate will work

Vietnam usually requires a visa in advance (depends where you're from), and you'd have to go to BKK and fly there

' advice and head to Laos (presumably Vientiane). You can easily get visas on arrival, it's easy to get there, and while its hardly disneyland there's probably enough to keep your kids entertained for a night or two.
