I'm about to come to the end of my contract with my employer and changing from non-b extension to a tourist visa..

I'm a UK citizen currently living in Chiang Mai but I'm not a huge fan of Vientiane.

Can anyone recommend another nearby venue or is it best to bite the bullet and put up with Vientiane??

Also what's the current turn around time for tourist visa applications in VN and elsewhere??

Thanks in advance...

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to transition from a NON-B extension to a tourist visa and is seeking alternatives to Vientiane for the visa process, as they are not fond of that location. Several comments recommend other Thai consulates in Southeast Asia, particularly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and share insights on the application process, necessary documentation, and potential delays during holidays like Songkran. It is noted that Vientiane, although busy, is user-friendly compared to other options.

Tod Daniels~ it's just occured to me that if I hand in on 12th I won't get back until 17th..

Is it possible they will expidite and do same day because of songkran closures??

If you fancy another location there are flight to KL from Chiang Mai.

nope, you're gonna be stuck there until they re-open.

Never seen that happens.

Both thai consulates in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh are good consulates to use IF you meet the requirements and remember that they only take US dollars for visa fees there ;)

ahh, vientiane still doesn't require anything as far as documentation to get a tourist visa. BUT you will need to make an online appointment and there are no openings until April 12th (friday).

By vn do you mean VietNam or VientiaNe?

there is no appointments required for the thai consulates in Vietnam. It's just walk up service

If you're going for a tourist visa, check their websites but for sure you'll need proof of funds (20K baht or the equivalent in a bank account) and proof of onward travel (within 60-90 days). They ask for those things pretty regularly

Okay, to go from your current extension based on employment to a tourist visa from a thai consulate :O

You need to go to the immigration office with a letter from your employer and proof you canceled your work permit and CANCEL your current extension of stay officially.

Then you can go out of the country and buy a NEW tourist visa from a thai consulate.

There are 5 or more thai consulates in S/E Asia that you can choose from although NONE of them are as "user friendly" as the one in Vientiane is <- which is why it's the busiest one in S/E Asia. :O

All the other thai consulates in the area are going to require some or all of the 3-proof-ofz; proof of 20K baht in a bank account, proof of onward travel in 60 - 90 days, and proof of a hotel booking.

I'd say DON'T go to Vientiane on a Monday or a Thursday <- Those are the days the visa run companies from Bangkok lug people there.

The turn around time in Vientiane is the same as it's always been, turn in your application and passport one morning before 11:30 and pick up your passport with the visa in it the next afternoon after 1:30.

@Steve *******
Vientiane does NOT require any of the 3-proof-ofz to issue tourist visas. It's the ONLY thai consulate in the area that is that way

reading this suggests VN won't need the proof of ongoing flight.. I already have the other 2 so do you think I will or won't need flight booking??
