What are some fun overnight destinations for a family trip from Bangkok during a visa run?

Looks like we need to do a quick border bounce for the kids in order to get them their education visas. Since they’re in school, we only have 48hours max (so a weekend essentially). We want to make the best of it so wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a fun overnight destination where we could play tourists for a bit. None of us have ever been to any of the neighbouring countries so open to anything! We’re leaving from Bangkok and would rather fly than take land transportation.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses options for a quick overnight trip from Bangkok for a family to renew education visas. Recommendations include destinations such as Siem Reap, Vietnam's Hoi An, Penang in Malaysia, and Singapore. The conversation emphasizes the importance of considering consulate hours for visa processing, especially since many operate only during weekdays. Suggestions highlight activities for families, with specific mentions of historical sites, adventure parks, and culinary experiences.

Thank you every one for the amazing comments. Looks like we will be heading to KL for the weekend but your suggestions have giving us future plans indeed!!! 😁🙏😎

FYI: Penang is smaller more interesting, less expensive as well and Georgetown is world heritage city

Yes but you can't get them new visas issued over a weekend. So coming back, they'll only be eligible for visa exemptions unless they already possess a multiple entry visa, which by the sounds of it, they don't.

thanks but in this case, we only needed new 45 day stamps in their passports. In order to issue ED visas in Bangkok, immigration requires that there be at least two weeks left in the passports. We were shy by a day. 🤦‍♀️. So we needed to leave to get new stamps and return to immigration.

Air Asia to Kuala Lumpur - not expensive, lots of flights and quick

Any feedback of your trip to KL? Could be interesting for people looking for some visa run or getaway …

You're going to need to spend a couple of weekdays at the consulate in the country you choose to visit. There's no other way around it. Vientiane and Savannakhet are probably your best bets, as they issue visas overnight. However, Vientiane is always busy and requires an appointment in advance. Even if it's "boring" Savannakhet is the consulate you want, assuming they issue education visas (probably they do) but make sure you have all the documentation you need in advance.

For Savannakhet, in order to minimize the time away from school for the kids, you'll need to fly domestically from Bangkok to Nakorn Phanom or Ubon Ratchathani (the nearest airports to Savannakhet on the Thai side) then find a taxi to drive you to Mukdahan, which unfortunately, doesn't have an airport of it's own. However, it shouldn't take you much more than 1.5-2 hours from either Ubon airport or Nakorn Phanom airport, to reach the border. From there, catch a cross-border bus for the 5km into Savannakhet town.

Do this on a Sunday. You apply for the visa between 9am and 11am on Monday, then you'll receive your passports back from 2pm-4pm on Tuesday. Get there at 2pm, take the bus or a taxi back to Mukdahan and make a beeline for the closest airport, catching the evening flight back to Bangkok.

It may be a bit stressful with children, though it's doable.

Stay at the Daosavanh hotel in Savannakhet as they have a pool, though no guarantees about whether it's in good shape, post-Covid. Immediately pre-Covid border closures (March 2020), I stayed there and it was fine but that may have changed. Anyway, for a one night stay it should be doable.

However, if you can schedule an appointment in advance and don't mind spending several hours waiting at the consulate to submit your documents, Vientiane can be efficient and is probably more fun for the kids.

I don't know whether Penang, Kota Bharu or other nearby consulates can issue visas the next day.

Yangon can, but that's a risky place to travel to at the moment especially with children, given the current political situation. Also, proof of vaccination or a test + health insurance is required to visit Myanmar right now, as well as a visa. Note that e-visas need vaccination proof, so if you're not vaccinated, you'd need to apply through the Burmese embassy although an agent could help you with that meaning you wouldn't have to show up in person.

Phnom Penh takes 4 days to issue a visa, or did, the last time I went there.

Singapore or Penang.

Both family friendly.

Hoi An

You can fly into Siem Reap, which is a very short flight of just 33 mins on average. That's the closest international flight. Or fly to Vientiane - a 48 minute flight on average, but much more expensive than flying to nearby Udon Thani, from where it's a short 40 minute van ride to the border, then another 20-25 minutes into Vientiane city.

Denang Vietnam highly recommended. Check out Celina Hotel, very affordable, big rooms, big bathrooms. Have roof top swimming and near the beach. This Town is a popular holiday destination for the locals. Also we used

Bus to Poi Pet Cambodia border crossing. Then hop the train to Battambang. Nice little place

Penang: seconded. A walking museum.

I vote Penang. Cambodia and Lao in my experience would be boring for kids. Penang, is beautiful country, you can rent a motorcycle, plenty of activities.
Paul *******
@Terary *********
A motorcycle isn't a good idea for kids. Better rent a car. Much easier getting around and car rental is cheap in Malaysia.

School age children, angkor wat is pretty dam cool, Cambodia, short flight. Also the temple there has a great history lesson on pol pot and you can teach them about brutal dictators and why being free is a blessing.
Paul *******
@Ruth ******
Siem Reap is a 35 minute flight from Bangkok. I'd be concerned if it took an hour, as I'd be worried I'm on the wrong flight! There are also several daily direct bus services. Everyday on the expressway/motorway you'll see these buses as they transport passengers to/from Mo Chit bus station.
Ruth *******
@Paul ******
why are you nit picking the time? Airlines lost the time between 1:05 and 1:20, depending upon the airline. Does it really matter though? The point was that it was a quick flight.
Paul *******
@Ruth ******
It's not "nitpicking" but stating a fact. Look at a map. A 1.05 hour flight takes you all the way to Ho Chi Minh City. There's no way a flight to Siem Reap would take over an hour unless there is a lot of air traffic in the Bangkok region and the flight needs to circle a few times before landing or there are thunderstorms/adverse weather conditions.

A normal flight takes on average 35 mins. It's only 360km by road between these two towns...you really don't need to fly at all - if you drive or use taxis on both sides, including the border crossing will only take you around 6 hours, door to door (less if your origin or destination is on the east side of Bangkok, such as Suvarnabhumi airport).

more people need to learn why dictators are dangerous. They are ever so tempting. Democracy is hard. Autocrats tell folks they can fix everything for them and then…

@Ruth ******
democracy has been undermined by man's basic greed and absolute corruption. History always repeats itself. Then and only then, the enslaved wake up

that sounds fantastic actually… but I might want to save it for when we have a bit more time. 48 hrs might be too rushed. Then again, this might be an excellent reason to skip school for a day or two… 😁
Ruth *******
@Natalie *******
I have to second this recommendation. Siem Reap is one of my favorite places and just over an hour’s flight from Bangkok. A great tuk-tuk driver also makes the world of difference. There’s a Cambodia fb group that talks about the tuk tuk drivers frequently (& obviously thus has archives) if you decide to go, Natalie.

absolutely! There's a really nice Cambodian owned and run hotel there, can't remember the name but look for it. Really nice and not too expensive. Find yourself a really good tuktuk driver and they will take you out the whole day to see all the temples, for next to nothing, and he was so good and had ice cold water for us all day long, waited whenever we stopped for pictures, wasn't rushed, I think I sent one of his kids to college when I tipped him a hundred bucks US dollar.

He made our day and I made his!

Remember what goes around comes around.

For 48h max , no destination can beat Singapore (if you flying from BKK): no visa needed, tons of convenient and cheap flights (direct flights, 2h30 only) delicious and various local food, tons of activities to do as a family (for all ages) like Universal studios and so many others !!! 🇸🇬

Bear in mind that consulates aren't open on the weekend so you'll need to do this during the week, and pick a consulate that does next day visas (not all do). Generally with the ones that do do next day you submit in the morning day 1 and pick up afternoon day 2. 48 hours might just about be possible but you typically want to be at the consulate first thing day 1 so it's usually 3 days minimum.

we don’t need to visit an embassy but can re-enter Thailand with a new 45 day visa exempt stamp for them. Our present issue is that they have less than 2 weeks left at the moment and Immigration wants more than two weeks in order to stamp their education visas. I don’t quite get it but oh well!
James ***************
@Natalie *******
- ah ok. Is the school helping you ? Our little adopted 4 year old has started school but similar situation to your children and needs an ED visa. She is currently back in Cambodia and will re enter on a 45 day exemption. Hopefully, like you we can sort out ed visa on her return to Thailand.

yes, school had prepared all of the documents but hadn’t indicated that we needed a full two weeks remaining on the visas. We went into Immigration on Friday with 12 days remaining, thinking we had plenty of time . We were very shocked to hear they needed a full two weeks. Had we known, we would have come in a few days earlier. Oh well! Trying to make the best of it now and seeing it as a little trip. What else can you do? 🤷‍♀️
James ***************
@Natalie *******
- unfortunately many things are not straight forward in the land of smiles. Have you decided where you are going to visit yet ?

haven’t decided yet. Will come down to the cost of the flight I assume, plus ease of entering the other country. Some great options though so I think we can’t go wrong. Should be a fun weekend! 😁

@Natalie *******
umm, I will assume your kids are currently on tourist visas, or visa exempt stamps. Have you already gotten the 30 day extension that is allowed as a tourist?
Natalie ********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Kool ******
we have already received the 30 day extensions, unfortunately. Only option is to leave and come back with a fresh 45 day stamp.
James ***************
@Natalie *******
- can you clarify if your childrens education visas need renewed after 12 months and to enable this you need to leave and re enter thailand and go through the same process again ?
Natalie ********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@James **************
we’re not there yet… this is the first time we are getting ED visas for them and their 30 days tourist extension is running out.
Ivan ************
@Natalie *******
right, that's normal for a conversion, they do need a certain amount of time left. In that case you can go anywhere, there's no restriction. Penang would be nice for a weekend if you haven't been there before, and there are direct flights from Bangkok, 1h50. Air is cleaner down there right now too.
Alex *******
She said border bounce not visa run
Ivan ************
@Alex ******
fair enough but she also said "to get them their education visas". Maybe this is just to get a fresh visa exempt stamp and convert in country, I took it to mean, to get the visa.
Natalie ********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Ivan ***********
if it wasn’t for school, we would probably do as you suggest and just take the week to go and visit an embassy and get it all sorted out then and there.
Graham ******
@Alex ******
but the kids are in school so they need an Education Visa
