A bit of advice required from your knowledge. I am returning to the UK Sunday following a stay on a 90 day non-immigrant category O single entry.

My plan is to return on a multi entry O visa and apply for a retirement visa on my return.

My question is when is the earliest I can return to Thailand.

Thank you in advance

TLDR : Answer Summary
The earliest you can return to Thailand after your stay on a 90-day Non-O single entry visa is immediately, as you can exit and then re-enter under a 30-day visa exemption stamp. Additionally, some commenters suggest reconsidering the need for a multi-entry Non-O visa if you're planning to apply for a retirement visa.

Why would you get a year-long, multi-entry Non-O visa if you're going to get a yearly extension based on retirement here in thailand. Just come in on a 90 day single entry Non-O, or if you can't get that come in on a 60 day tourist visa or even a visa exempt entry.

- which gets him 1-year (can make it 2-years) before doing the retirement extension.
