TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian considering a trip to Thailand on a 45-day stamp in January seeks advice on whether to apply for a Non-O (A/O) retirement visa while in Thailand or before arriving. Responses highlight that applying for the Non-O visa after entering Thailand is possible, as it typically requires evidence of funds in a Thai bank account, while the OA visa should be applied for in the home country. It is noted that the OA visa can only be pursued from Australia, requiring 800,000 Thai baht, whereas the Non-O visa options may have different requirements depending on entry and residence status.

I think a big difference is that if you apply in Thailand, you do not need to purchase medical insurance Joseph.

and the OX visa from Sydney Australia is worth every penny of getting health insurance ... It's a 10 year Thai visa without the need to deposit money in a Thai bank account.

Another Thai Visa you may wish to look at...is the OX visa from Sydney Australia Thai Embassy good for 10 years stay in Thailand with no money needed to be deposited in a Thai bank account in your name only.

It's the BEST way to get a Long stay retired visa for Thailand... And ONLY with funds as stated on the SYDNEY Thai Embassy website.

I assume that you are age 50+, and not married to a Thai...nor the father of Thai child.

As far as I know
@James *******
, if he applied in Australia, he only needs to prove he has the equivalent of 800k Thai baht in an Australian bank account. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

you are correct 💯

it depends on the Thai Embassy or Consulate in Australia where he submits his application. YES the OA visa does NOT require money to be in a Thai bank account.

If you ENTER Thailand Visa EXEMPT you will be stamped in for 45 days plus one 30 day extension of stay for 1900 Thai baht at local Thai immigration office

If you want to apply for the Non O Visa as retiree and the One year extension of stay as retired... this is a common found list of requirements
James ********
That is the major difference between getting the OA visa in your home country or in Thailand.

The OA based retirement Visa can ONLY be applied for in your home country.

If you have 800,000 Thai baht to deposit in a Thai bank account in your name only after you arrive into Thailand...you can get a Non O Visa as a retiree and the One year extension of stay as retired from the Thai immigration office in your area.
