TLDR : Answer Summary
To open a Thai bank account as an expat moving to Bang Sare for long-term retirement in February 2026, you will need to enter Thailand with a long-stay visa, such as a Non-O (Retirement) visa, OA, OX, LTR, or Elite visa. You cannot open an account on a tourist visa. Once you arrive, you can obtain a residency certificate from local immigration, which will help you with the bank account application. It is advisable to consult with a local visa agent or contact the Thai consulate for personalized assistance.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.
  • Join the Thai Visa Advice Facebook Group to ask your questions, and get advice from others.

You don't need an agent

I would say hire a visa agency in Thailand

There are better places. “Bang Saray, a coastal town in Thailand, has seen an increase in Russian residents and tourists, particularly since the war in Ukraine. This influx is due to Thailand's popularity as a tourist destination and a place for Russians to relocate, with some drawn to the affordability and relaxed atmosphere compared to other havens in Europe and the Middle East. There have also been reports of Russians involved in both tourism-related activities and more serious legal issues, like financial fraud, in the Bang Saray area”

get on Google maps, search for Visa agents, call them all until you find somebody that says they can open you an account. Good luck!

"Just come" as it is like walking into a 7-11. And they , Immigration, give the documents over the counter and someone opens a bank account just as they please?

What you are saying may be possible with an agency.

Only if you tell us what help you need

You should come on a long stay visa such as an O, OA, OX, LTR, or Elite. If you enter on a tourist visa or DTV you will probably not be able to open an account.

you sound like an Aussie, so am I. I went did the evisa and was directed to the Sydney Consulate. When you get to the visa section choose non immigrant O and in the next drop down menu choose "other". The next drop down menu will show pensioner over 50 y/o. Choose that one. They will check your funds and must be up to date to the day you apply. The good part of this visa is that there in no bs compulsory Thai health insurance. You can use that non o visa to open a Bangkok Bank account. Since coming here I have extended my visa and all is good. Good luck.

on the Thai e-visa website in your home country apply for the type O 90 day visa based on retirement. Because you are both over 50 you will both need the equivalent of bt800,000 in each of your bank accounts, and yes thinking long term you will both need separate accounts. Not all embassies accept joint accounts. Once in Thailand for convenience you will both want separate bank accounts for your everyday shopping needs, as you can not have two debit cards on the same account. You each need a long term visa to open an account here. Once you are here on your type O 90 day visas you both open Thai bank accounts, and transfer by SWIFT transfer the bt800,000+ into each account, as you need these Thai accounts and money to get your one year extensions as soon as the bt800,000 has been in the Thai accounts for at least two months. It is all pretty straightforward, and the easiest visa, and yearly extension to get. This is how it is done now, because of changes preventing anyone on a tourist entry from getting a Thai bank account. The type O 90 day visa you will get is good for 90 days to enter Thailand, and stamped in for 90 days when you enter. As it gets closer to when you want to come here I can give you more up to date at that time details.

The current consensus is to get an O visa that doesn't require health insurance. Keep your health insurance needs separate from your visa.

I am currently on a 10 year LTR visa (which does have an insurance requirement). If you
