What type of visa should I apply for if I plan to stay in Thailand for 3 months on a sabbatical?

If you go on sabbatical to Thailand for 3 months and apply for a visa with all the details like flight booked, accommodation etc. Then you get an approved e visa type tourist TR with validity date (issue date so not the date of departure) and expiry date (3 months after issue date and thus shorter than the actual date of departure from Thailand. Is this correct then and if not; which visa should we apply for?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When traveling to Thailand for a 3-month sabbatical, it's important to note that the validity period of an e-visa (like the TR tourist visa) indicates when you must enter the country, not the duration of your stay. Upon entry, you typically receive a 60-day stamp, which can be extended for an additional 30 days. For Dutch passport holders, you can enter Thailand visa-free for 60 days and extend this period without needing a visa.

If you have a dutch passport, no need to apply for visa You get 60 days visa free which you can extend at local immigration for another 30 days A visa will give you same period

thanks for sharing your knowledge, can I do this in advance from home or when I am in Thailand en reaching these terms you mentioned? Where can I arrange that? Kind regards, Wendy

you can only do that while you're in Thailand Depends on where you are at the moment you want to do it There are immigration offices in all provinces

The validity date on the visa has nothing to do with how long you can stay in Thailand. It means you must use the visa by that date, you must enter Thailand by that date.

Once you enter Thailand, even if you enter on the last date the visa is valid, you will receive a 60 day stamp as your permission to stay in Thailand. You can then apply one time for a 30-day extension, giving you 90 days total.

thanks you so much for the clearancy, can I apply for the extension in advance? Where can I arrange for the extension? Any advice?

most offices will let you apply when your permission to stay in Thailand has 30 days or less left. Some allow 45 days and some only allow you to apply during the last week.

You would apply at the immigration office that serves the area where you are staying.
