Can I apply for a tourist visa while going on a 3-month sabbatical in Thailand?

If you go on sabbatical to Thailand for 3 months and apply for a visa with all the details like flight booked, accommodation etc. Then you get an approved e visa type tourist TR with validity date (issue date so not the date of departure) and expiry date (3 months after issue date and thus shorter than the actual date of departure from Thailand. Is this correct then and if not; which visa should we apply for?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you're planning a 3-month sabbatical in Thailand, as a citizen of the Netherlands, you may not need to apply for a tourist visa (TR) because you can enter Thailand using a free 60-day visa-exempt entry stamp. Moreover, you can extend your stay by an additional 30 days at an immigration office for a fee of 1900 baht.

It looks like you're from the Netherlands, you don't need a visa, you can enter on free 60 day visa exempt entry stamp, and you can extend this once an additional 30 days at immigration for 1900 baht

thank you soo much for your reply. Where and when can I arrange the 30 days extra at immigration? Can I arrange this in advance from the Netherlands before going to Thailand? Or is this only possible in Thailand when I have arrived there? When entering Thailand or somewhere else? Thanks for charing, kind regards

Just go in the last week to extend.

Extending earlier may suggest that you never intended to comply with conditiones of the 60 day visa excempt.

show up here free stamp entry get 60 days,

when you have a week or so left on that stamp GO to the immigration office in the area where you're staying and apply for the 30 day extension for 1900baht

It's a simple process.

Any Immigration office.

Would cost you more and need more paperwork, than just extending.

extensions are only available in country, typically when you have 30 days or less left on your current permission to stay stamp. Basically you go to the immigration office serving where you're staying at that time, you'll only need your passport, 1900 baht, and to be sure a TM30 has been filed wherever you are staying.
