TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are already in Thailand and wish to purchase new travel health insurance after extending your visa, traditional travel insurance may not be available as it is typically required to be bought before departure from your home country. However, there are several options: buying local Thai health insurance or expat insurance, extending an existing travel insurance policy, or obtaining a new policy from companies that offer insurance to travelers currently in their destination country, such as Luma ASEAN Pass or SafetyWing. It's crucial to read the terms and conditions carefully, especially regarding age limits and coverage periods.

Luma Asian Pass Travel Health Insurance can be purchased at any time during your travel. It does not have to be purchased at your home country. You will receive an email with your policy within minutes of purchase. They have weekly, monthly, all the way up to 8 months premiums. Some well meaning people hand out misinformation often

I never used to, but it's a risk when you get older.

On saying that, you don't know how good they are until you have a claim.

World nomads, they do travel insurance after you left your home country, but they don't cover the first 3 days after you signed

I heard from someone whose claim was denied because they didn’t have other insurance that World Nomads is only secondary insurance. I have not yet confirmed this myself.

Most international travel insurance has a time limit you can be outside of your home country. You'll need to contact your insurer and speak with them.

Travel insurance can typically only be purchased before departing for your trip. You should instead buy Thai medical insurance, similar to someone living here. Or if you are here short term and already have an existing expiring travel insurance policy, they normally can be extended directly with the insurer. You just can't buy a brand new travel insurance policy when already in mid trip.

There are few people on gofundme have found out the hard way that travel insurance only usually lasts a specific amount of time 1 month, 2 months etc from leaving your country.

Dont try tricks with insurance you wont get paid out.

Speak with your insurance agent and read the fine print
