What should I do if my 60-day tourist visa for Thailand is delayed and I leave soon?

Hi everyone.

So I applied for a 60 day tourist visa a couple of weeks ago and I got told yesterday by the Thai embassy that they are currently receiving a very high amount of applications and that the processing time is now 25 business. I am leaving on Friday so I am afraid I won't get in on time.

What would you recommend? I guess I need to enter Thailand with the 30 day exemption then ask and pay for an extension in an immigration office? I am assuming that an e-visa can't be activated when in Thailand already?

I can't find clear answers.

Thanks so much in advance πŸ™

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has applied for a 60-day tourist visa to Thailand but has been informed by the Thai embassy that due to high application volume, the processing time is now 25 business days, which could delay their travel plans as they are leaving soon. Suggestions from the community indicate entering Thailand using the 30-day visa exemption and applying for an extension at an immigration office. They also clarify that the e-visa cannot be activated while in Thailand. Users share similar experiences and processing times at different embassies, noting delays and suggesting proactive measures, such as emailing embassies urgently.

and others. You seem to have Western passports. Another option is to fly into Malaysia (Penang) and obtain your Thai Visa that way. Then hop to Thailand.

This works for Single Entry Tourist Visa and certain non-imm single/multiple categories (mainly non-o/non-b).

METV you must apply in home country or country where you can prove residence.

If you are burning through cancelled air tickets, hotels, and other headaches with local consulates, maybe 2-4 extra nights in Penang might not sound so bad.

Just go out for a night then stamp back in. Flights are cheap.

Thailand is going to be absolutely packed this Christmas, horrible.

Noone knows that at all .

Every holiday since covid has been a disappointment.

Even Chinese are way behind.

Everything had doubled since covid.

No longer the cheap vacation, many shops still closed.

Many people are reporting getting their Visas a day or so before they travel as applications are prioritised. Be sure to keep checking for your email right up to departure then, on arrival if you have not received it, connect to the airport free wifi and check again before Immigration.

@Graham *****
that is a terrible way to travel, not knowing if your visa is aproved or not. Much better to use a different Thai consulate that can process app much faster.

@Jon *****
You are normally restricted to one Consulate by your location

Good luck. I'm still waiting for a 60 day visa I applied for more than two months ago (LAembassy).
Terary **********
You can't activate the visa while in Thailand.. However, you can exist and enter using the visa.

Money talks. Ask how much for a fast service. My guess

Facebook message them. I got mine last year while waiting for connection into Thailand.

Always give much more time than the website says.

I also emailed the embassy.

But i really dont get it what is the reason for this to take soo long?!? 2021 when it was not online i got the visa for 2-3 days, and everything was manuall, now we have it online, with AI involved and also a lot of people using visa exempt instead?!?! I dont really get it, and after i researched after the embassies in Europe and some in SEA its the same situation everywhere...

Thailand is becoming very busy.

it was much busier before. The problem are the current requirements for just a 60-day tourist visa.

The Ottawa embassy has been backed up for years (not joking). They state on their website that processing time is 25 business days. So with both Canadian and Thai holidays, you need 7 weeks. I applied for my Jan 25 trip on Nov 30

We had the same issue in the UK And my mates are also having the same. So ... Now send an email with all your details to the email they send you. Head it URGENT. I did this too late because after I did that the visa only took 3 more working days. You still have time . It can even arrive when you are airbound so make sure you log in before immigration. Failing that, you are in my position. I will extend my 30 days and then leave the country. Instead of seeing it as the headache it really is, we have decided to make a trip to Malaysia and have a few days there. At first we were going to do a day return but that would just be arguments as I am blamed by her indoors for not applying in time

I applied only 15 days before travel which was stupid but I had an unfortunate illness prior to that and ended up in bed sick for a week so I delayed it.

Lesson everyone, try and apply a month before if you can.

Not relevant to you but but UK application was approved in 5 days.

in Australia mine was Aproved in a few hours. Submitted on line. 3 hours later got email to say it was approved and passport was in the mail. December 2021.

You dont mail your passport for an evisa.
Stephen *******
@Steve ******
yes mine was AO retirement visa.
Steve *******
Stephen Darby No mailing of passport required for any evisa, from tourist to OA πŸ‘
Stephen *******
@Steve ******
for my OA I had to send passport away. Australia. So they can stamp the visa in I guess. But have always had to send passport in Australia. 13 years now
Steve *******
@Stephen ******
That'll be the old way. The new evisa system doesnt require mailing in your passport. You get the visa via email and print it off to show Immigration on arrival
Stephen *******
@Steve ******
a out time too. Never liked mailing my passport.

makes me wonder if the alternate Vancouver embassy is any more responsive

You're correct that you cannot activate the visa in Thailand if it arrives later.

The only thing you can do if you want more time after you arrive and get your 30 day extension would be to leave Thailand and enter again, using your visa at that time.

Can you advise which Thai embassy is processing your application so we're aware to help others?
Dennis ***********
@Brandon ***********
The Ottawa Embassy has cost me over $1200 Canadian dollars the last2 E visa applications ,canceled flights (visa not received) request for documents already sent, enquiry email(no response)phone calls (answer it's in the process DON'T call again.It is a very frustrating experience.It MUST IMPROVE.

the evil system has made the usually multi entry visa very complicated in Canada, at least..I cannot speak to the 60 day award..I had a first time refusal this year after 6 successful ones..my error was , in the end..disclosing I was already here having to keep my very costly air reservation..last years arrived late as well but activated it exactly as described above..utilize visa exempt, extend and then initiate any awarded visa at border. Do not forget to have a copy of the emailed award with you ..it seems almost no cross checking with foreign embassy awards and the Thai Police Immigration authority once here..
