What should I do about my visa expiration and passport renewal before a possible trip to KL?

Need to decide by tomorrow to buy flight tickets.

Decided to go to KL for Tourist visa.

My visa expires Aug. 18th.

My dilemma of buying a ticket is a catch-22 .

Over a week ago I was going to make an appt at US embassy as I'm almost out of pages, so needed to add.

I did it a few yrs ago, and it just took a day.

They've changed it.

No additional pages.

Have to renew passport, which means sending to States,

that takes 2-3 weeks.

Once I found that out, I set an appt.,

but couldn't get one till Wed/15th.

I sent quite a few emails to embassy saying if I can get an emergency passport, to do a visa run.

They replied saying the consular officer I see that day will decide if you can get one or not, can't tell you through email.

So if they say no, I lose a plane ticket (hence, why I've hesitated getting one), and I don't know what I'd do,as it means I'd be overstayed till they send a passport back.

So that's one problem, that I'm not sure there's really an answer.

I think I need to chance it,and get a flight.

Everything's booked on wed (if I go after my appt).

If I go Thurs, I'd have to wait till Fri to get to KL Thai embassy, and have to wait till Monday to get it (2 wasted days).

If a visa expires on a weekend, as mine is the 18th,

which is Saturday, would that hinder them giving me the visa?

As the best would be if I leave bkk Sunday ,do it Mon, get it Tues?

That would be so much better.

Sorry for long explanation.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is facing a complex situation regarding their upcoming trip for a visa run to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Their current visa is set to expire on August 18th, which falls on a weekend. They need to get a new passport due to no longer being able to add pages to their current one, and the renewal process takes 2-3 weeks. They've booked an appointment at the US embassy for August 15th to inquire about getting an emergency passport, but there's uncertainty about whether it will be granted. The user is concerned about potentially losing the cost of a flight if things don’t go as planned, and they are contemplating the timing of their visa run, particularly in relation to their visa’s expiration date.

Always the best thing to do, need to change passport but wait till your visa runs out and start panicking. You're a Tourist, book a flight back home get a new passport and come back for your next holiday.

I'm on a tourist. Did two border runs, and they said I had to fly out.

In the past I had a marriage visa, and then an ed visa.

Ok. Now I think I've got it. That's confusing.

I almost bought plane tickets. What a relief.

Thanks.

You dont have to fly out but you would have to fly IN to recieve another 30 day visa exempt stamp in the current calender year

Ok, thanks. Yes was my 2nd border crossing.

So at the border they meant I have to fly out, the next time, after the 30 day extension.

Thanks Paul and Steve. Makes sense now.

if that was your 2nd land border crossing for a 30 day visa exempt stamp that’s all you can do in a calendar year. (That’s why they said you must fly in if you want another 30 day visa exempt stamp)

And yes each 30 day visa exempt stamp can be extended by 30 days for 1900 baht at a immigration office in country.

John Marengo Yes, you can apply for a 30 day extention of stay to your current admitted until date if you havent already done so

I'm confused. Why was I told I had to fly out of the country,,and back?

So you're saying I can just go to immigration and get a 30day extension.

That's the first I've heard of that.
Steve *******
@John ********
Yes. That 30 day extention should give you enough time to re new your passport

I don't understand that. For each 30day border run, I can then go to immigration, and extend for another 30?

Why at the border they told me I have to fly out,and come back?
Steve *******
@John ********
You can extend each entry into the country. If you're not married anymore or dont have Thai children then you can only extend by 30 days

Not married to a Thai. I was married, and then I had a marriage visa. Not anymore.

Why at the last border run, they said next time I have to fly out and come back?

You mean at immigration? Really? I thought that was only first time coming to Thailand, 60 days, then can extend for 30 more.
Steve *******
You can extend your current tourist visa for 30 days or 60 if you're married to a Thai national, and havent already done so.

What visa are you currently on and have you extended it yet?
