Travel and extension question.

Did a search for 'extension' and 'consideration' and got a bit confused on when (and how long) the IO takes away your passport when under consideration.

Have type O non-imm....last extension expires 2 Aug.

Need passport for intl travel 26-31 July.

Option 1: go to Jomtien IO real soon (19 or 20 July) and risk IO holding my passport when I need it for 26-31 July travel. ...OR

Option 2: Go on expiration day 2 Aug after returning from travel. (I think the new extension has to be done on expiration day and not like 90 day report, a week after.)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on how to handle their passport situation in relation to a visa extension while needing it for international travel. They are considering two options: approaching the immigration office (IO) before a planned trip on July 26-31 or waiting until the expiration of their current extension on August 2. A comment clarifies that the IO may only keep the passport for a few days; thus, the user should inform the IO of their travel plans and potentially purchase a re-entry permit to maintain their visa status during the 'under consideration' period. They are advised that the second option might lead to complications due to national holidays affecting application dates.

No immigration offices would keep your passport during the whole under-consideration period. Jomtien sometimes keeps your passport to process the stamp, but it's up to a few days for when you get the extension (not the under-consideration stamp) if I remember right.

Option 1 would work for you, BUT, tell the IO about the plan of your travel abroad first before you really submit the documents. And make sure they are okay with you leaving Thailand for a short stay during the U/C period. Then AFTER they accept your application and you get the under-consideration stamp, buy a single-entry re-entry permit to keep your U/C stamp alive.

Option 2 might be an alternative, BUT, unfortunately, 1 and 2 August are national holidays, you only can apply for your next extension on 3 Aug.

Your current extension expires on 2 Aug and the office is closed due to a national holiday, so you can apply for a new yearly extension on 3 Aug as normal, oveerstay fine will be waived for that day. But you will get the stamp mentioning one day overstay. And in case your documents are not completed, you will be on overstaying until you submit everything.

Try option 1 first. Then you can have option 2 as a backup plan.

ok thanks.

I took your advice and tried option #1 ..... Bangkok bank opened 10 am. Received bank documents by 10.15 and then drove 15 minutes to Jomtien immigration.

New Jomtien que position #1 did not have many people in line. And then section 8 extensions called our que # in a few minutes.

Total time from Bank opening to exit IO was 1 hour! (Reason so fast...Combination of going Wed., low season and morning rain and luck?)

They said I can pick up my passport tomorrow afternoon. So I do not have to cancel next week's Vietnam travel plans.

, glad you got the procedure (almost) done. Don't forget to apply for a re-entry permit tomorrow (if you don't have one). Safe travels.
