What options do I have for re-entering Thailand after traveling to Laos with a near-expired visa?

Good afternoon

I arrived in Thailand on 14th Jan and my visa expires on 14th March. To extend this my Thai partner and I travelled to Laos today with intentions of returning to Thailand on 13th March. I have been told by the Thai office at Nong Khai that I will not be allowed back in via Nong Khai and must fly to Bangkok to get entry back into Thailand. As I stay near Phang Khon in Sakon Nakhon I will then have to fly back to Udon Thani for my partner to collect me with vehicle we have left at Nong Khai as we have done on last 2 visits to Laos. Any advise would be more than welcome, sorry if it is a bit long winded, many thanks, Chris

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, Chris, faced difficulties returning to Thailand from Laos due to visa expiration and was told by local immigration that re-entry via Nong Khai was not permitted anymore. This prompted a discussion about the current state of Thailand's immigration rules, where many commenters noted the increasing difficulty of land border crossings for tourists, recommending using an agency for border runs or applying for long-term visas in advance. The importance of having proper documentation when entering Thailand was emphasized, and alternative suggestions for obtaining visas were mentioned. The overall sentiment indicates an effort by the Thai government to regulate and discourage border-hopping among tourists.

why don't you get a visa rather than playing the system. People like you are a reason Thailand may go back to 30-day non-exempt visa. now you asked for new ideas to beat the system
Pyae *********
The best way is apply thailand tourist visa in laos vientiane. You can enter from border with visa only. Arrival visa is not allow from borders. Its only cost $40 and about 3 days
Ian *********
this is when Visa-run agencies are really good to use!

Here's one: stop abusing the system. Tourist visas and exempts are for TOURISTS, and tourists usually go back home after visiting. So it all makes perfect sense...

The system has not been abused if you look at the legislation and what I have done everything is above board

I just got to Padang Besar Malaysia today, came by sleeper train and was denied reentry. I was told by immigration that I had to spend the night in Malaysia. There were also four people ahead of me from France and they were all denied as well. Now we are all stuck in Malaysia 😭😭😭😭

In such cases, you can return by Land only two times per a calendar year.

By air, no limit.
Chris ********

@Tungaa ***
That is interesting and what I thought but this is my first time this calender year but told no.
Tungaa ****
@Chris *******
Maybe that limit is for a period of year ( 12 months) instead of a calendar year.

You can check. I remember reading that in an official Thai govt document.

This is my 2nd time in 12 months. I have seen it also. Rather worrying if it is on an official govt site.

It appears that the limit for 2 entries has been changed by now

You just explained it your self last 2 visits.

You need to get the appropriate visa to stay in Thailand long term.

I misunderstood the process and thought I could come into Thailand on Visa exempt and then while there apply for the non-immigrant visa.

I have read so much about how difficult they’re making it to leave the country and come back that I decided to go to Cambodia and apply online for an E visa for the 90 day non-O immigrant. I may have to be here 10 days before I get it., but prices are so cheap. It’s not a problem. In Siem Reap I have a hotel with a rooftop swimming pool and a balcony on my room for $27 (U.S.) a night, near pub Street where all of the fun and night life is.

Michael *******
Any other countries you are aware of that let people circumvent visa rules because they spend lots of money ? It will have serious implications for the Isaan economy though…..:-) the UK, Europe and US are fighting elections on the basis of border control and its breeding a generation of nationalism I never expected to see in my life time - why should we have an issue with Thailand tightening controls just because we live here in our case legally, my Singaporean wife regularly flies home to help with family, never has an issue at immig. Singapore has very relaxed visa rules, don’t see everyone flocking there , or Malaysia for that matter……
Arnold **********
It’s all changing now with the new E visa that started two days ago.
Mike **********
As troublesome as it has become = those gaming the tourist visa system -- to live long-term in Thailand = get the message = the good Ole days of Thailand being the Best/easiest place to live in SE Asia

It's over folks

The new reality is here

My opinion =

The Thai government is making a huge mistake in making it so hard to stay longterm.

But it IS their country and they will do as they please.

My thought is= they are thinking 20++ years in the past when Hippies came with little or no money and stayed forever.

I think today = most trying to stay (without the complicated retirement visa process have plenty of money to spend) and will infuse Billions of Baht.

Again I'll say

It IS up to the Thai government = socstop whining and di it by the rules or suffer the consequences

And keeping in mind = the Thai authorities pretty much interpret "laws/regulations " at a local level= you never really know 'what are the rules" = it's 🇹🇭
Joseph ****
@Mike *********
I don't disagree with you that today's expats spend more money in the local economy than backpackers ever did. But they still don't contribute to the tax base(though that supposedly will change) and now that Thailand has seen how much Chinese tourists drop on short stays, they have moved on from dependency on Westerners. Thailand also hoped to move up the food chain in manufacturing, but I sense they might be treading water in that area.
Joe **********
Why don't people just abide by the rules and get the correct visas! They are on to us big time now so all you border hoppers and visa changers may as well pack up and leave now before they start to hand out jail sentences for the ones they catch! Be warned...... Time is running out for you!!!!!!
Phil ******
@Chris *******
sounds like you've been warned. I would border bounce so fly to Bangkok, border bounce to Cambodia by a company I've used in the past and then fly back . I can pass on the company's details if required. They are tough on entering airports atm
Chom ******
This happened to me 2 years ago. Nong kahi border IO said to not come back through land border and instead use aircraft if I want to enter again.

I still entered through the same border after a week stay in Laos and I didn’t face any issues.
Arnold **********
I have had two mates banned from entry and had to fly back to the UK 🇬🇧
Aaron *********
@Arnold *********
yeah- had a good booze up on jakarta a few months back with a British guy who got refused entry to Thailand for too many visas. change is here
Arnold **********
The government is trying to ban boarder entries and they want you to pay for a three month visa.
Stephen *********
@Arnold *********
I'm happy to get a 3 month visa but see nothing on the Thai visa website applicable to me. A 60 day tourist visa appears to be my only option!

'With a Tourist visa, you can stay in Thailand for no longer than 60 days. If you wish to stay in Thailand for more than 60 days, you can extend your stay with the Immigration Bureau'.

What visa should I be looking for?

Am I correct in thinking that a 60 day can only be extended once at an immigration office?
Stephen *********
I've done this every year for the past 3 years.

I get a 60 day tourist visa, renew once at immigration for 30 days and then again by visiting Laos for 3 days via Nong Khai for another 30 day extension.

I do this once in a calendar year.

I've never had a problem!

Which is just as well as I cycle across the bridge in to Laos!😀

A refusal to enter would be 'inconvenient' to say the least!
Michael *******
they just want compliance with the rules ETA will stop all the visa dodgers and clear the swamp
Arnold **********
@Stephen ********
they want to to pay for a 90 visa now.
Arnold **********
@Stephen ********
that’s exactly what they are trying to ban.
John ********
They said the same to my friend two weeks ago. And sure enough when he tried to get back in after a week in Laos they point blank refused him entry and told him to fly. As he wanted to go to Chiang Mai for 6 weeks before returning to America he took the train to Luang Prabang and flew to Chiang Mai, where they let him in without let or hindrance. Odd but it definitely is what it is. In future I would apply for a proper visa from your home country before coming to Thailand again
Lawrence ********
@John *******
How many times has he been to Thailand? Total. I did my first entry to Thailand (ever) for 60+30 exemption. I am in Laos for 3 weeks, then plan to return via Nong Khai for another 60+30, then return to my home country for a while.

So my history in Thailand is clean. Only one entry, ever. Has your friend had more history in Thailand?
Simon **********
At the risk of jinxing it, I would honestly get a border bounce with an agent. Unless you’re on the naughty step, border bounce is a conveyor belt and your agent will grease all the wheels necessary to make it seemless for you.
Terry *******
@Simon *********
yes that’s correct just fine one, from Koh samui to Malaysia border.

Staff in the immigration office organised it all 4500bht, no problems at all.

Without the right fixers you run a risk of not being recognized as a legitimate traveler.
Michael *******
@Simon *********
they will soon face the same issues, at least they will tell you when you try to book that risk of entry denial is high, always best to find out before you leave the country…..reality is the border run is slowly becoming a thing of the past , the ETA will kill it once and for all.
Michael ********
As you left vehicle at nong khai like last two times sounds like you did this last year as well. They will only put up with so much
Ian **********
I always recommend using an agency to do a border bounce as they have agreements that help you get back in without issues. I would leave it as long as you can and try one more time to get back in via Nong Khai before you go to the expense of a flight to Bangkok.

appreciate the advice have thought about it but cannot take the risk but have to be back on Thursday to prepare for new home ceremony on 15th.

This is the point you do the hail mary move. You take 3000 baht out of your pocket and go back to the immigration guy, look confused and say someone told you it was a 3000 baht fine to enter. For 3k it's worth not having the hassles if he takes it. If he doesn't you are back to step 1.

Good luck in Bangkok

I am here until 30th April and needed 60 days. If I go to immigration and get 30 days like some have I may be refused entry. It is all a bit of a hand jerk reaction to the 60 day tourist entry. This was news to me also.
Bruce **********
@Chris *******
knee jerk 😄
Nick ************
Maybe I am not quite understanding your situation but why didn't you just go to local immigration and get a 30 day extension in sakhon Nakhon? I've not heard of anyone being told they must re enter Thailand via Bangkok.
John **********
@Nick ***********
it's common they say that, basically to avoid an argument rather than just saying you can't enter Thailand unless you get a proper visa that meets the purpose of your stay
John **********
Be prepared for a hard time at BKK as well. At least be sure to have the 3 proofs, 20k baht or equivalent in CASH, a flight out within the period you'll be stamped in for and accommodation booked for the period. It's getting more and more difficult to try and live inside Thailand on visa exempt or tourist entries, I'd say it's time to look for a proper visa that meets the purpose of you living in Thailand and it might be a plan to do that prior to flying to Bangkok (or you could try crossing the bridge once you have one)
Gayeeva ******
@John *********
there’s ways to avoid that if you have connections :)

Why would they not allow you to cross by land? Just curious because I did this not too long ago and it was ok, no one told me anything when I left

Because I entered Thailand on 60 day tourist I can only go back to Thailand via Bangkok. I have seen many posts prior to my visit and I assumed as it was my first time this year it would be no problem. Have also noticed new signs displayed showing penalties for overstayers, rather concerned
Brian *********
@Ch***
this is visa exempt can be used for work meetings, events etc etc not just tourism which you all keep harking on about but the point of visa exempt is just that it can be used for a multitude of uses yet you all believe it’s just for tourists why is that ?
Jordan *****
@Brian ********
yeah, I’ve been coming here for years on visa exemptions, spending 3 months per year in the same places trying to decide whether to marry, get work, or invest in a business and I see no reason why I should be prohibited from doing so since I still live
***
of the year in another country and make absolutely no money in Thailand and getting Thai elite visa, retirement or DTV is not an option for me.

Also seeing some people here try to define what “tourism purposes” are with the pedantry of a talmudist interpreter is just ridiculous

as if you could ever define something so vague. Why is the average Pattaya enjoyer who spends months a year there on a huge budget less of a tourist than the backpacker who has been coming to Thailand for a decade and jumping from hostel to hostel?

The simple truth is that all these problems can be avoided if the Thai government would simply offer guidelines to the number of days you can spend in a year as a tourist on a visa exemption or tourist visa. Other than that we already know that we cannot work, which is perfectly fine.

I currently now, after many years, have a girlfriend in Thailand, what would happen if when I come back after many months in my homecountry I get denied because some border guard does not like the fact that I used to spend 3-4 months a year in Thailand?
John **********
@Chris *******
there's no such thing as entries being reset with a new year, that stopped with the introduction of the 60 day visa exempt entries (i assume that's what you had rather than a tourist visa). They now look at all of your recent history so I'm guessing you also had one or more similar visa exempt entries last year
Chris ********

@John *********
I was here in January but had a tourist 60 day visa which I extend for 30 days at immigration then another 30 days going to Laos. I returned in September for 60 days using the newly implemented exemlt entry
Nongnuch ********
@Chris *******
with your extensive tourist visa and visa-exempt stamp history in the recent 365 days, you are running a VERY high risk to be refused entry at an airport in Bangkok. I would NOT fly into Bangkok. I'd rather stay in transit, fly back to your home country, wait 3-4 months and apply for a 60-days tourist visa before you try to enter again. Immigration does not think that you are a "genuine" tourist, because you obviously have been "milking" tourism entries for a longstay in Thailand, which Immigration doesn't tolerate any more. You better start to get the proper visa for your purpose
John **********
@Chris *******
that's more than enough to cause you problems in the new world that has evolved since they they changed to the 60 day visa exempt stamp. Even ignoring your stamps prior to that happening last July you've entered visa exempt in September, I assume November, January and trying again now. It's not at all surprising you were refused entry. You just can't do that anymore. I personally think you will also struggle to enter via Bangkok
Brian *********
@Jo**
why can’t you do it anymore - understand if living but if genuine need to attend what’s the issue. Never heard this and please don’t say haven’t you seen the news - no I haven’t and no one wishes to share it with me either. visa exempt is not just for tourism so unsure why you think it is so. Happy to be shown im wrong if indeed I am.
John **********
@Brian ********
not sure what you mean by genuine need to attend? Tourist visas and visa to entries are for the purposes of tourism. Not for spending extended periods of time living in Thailand

even so you've hit a limit that is hard to circumvent these days. I think you will struggle at bangkok. Next time you come get a proper visa that matches the purpose of your stay (which is obviously not tourism)
