Entered Thailand september 8 (BKK) have single entry tourist visa that i will extend so that i can be in the country till dec 8. However i would like to stay here til april next year. What would be the best solution. My plan was to fly to Udon Thani ( I live in Chiangmai) and go to Laos and get another tourist visa. I am aware of the things i need to bring ( money, tm30 etc ) Just trying to figure out what is the best solution. I have a return flight to Denmark (april 2019 ) Thanks in advance..

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently in Thailand on a single-entry tourist visa and plans to extend their stay until December before wanting to remain in the country until April the following year. They seek the best options to achieve this, considering a trip to Laos for a new tourist visa. Responses suggest options such as a border run to Mae Sai, which is quicker and cheaper than flying, and highlights the importance of planning with respect to visa regulations, including the need to apply for a new visa in Vientiane.

If you are in Chiang Mai also consider doing a border run to Mae Sai (Myanmar border). This is quicker and cheaper than flying to Udon and going to Vientiane- it is 4h40 on a comfortable bus direct from CM, so you can do the whole thing there and back in one day.

You can only get two visa-exempt land entries per calendar year, but this would reset Jan 1 so if you don't have any yet, doing one in December would not take anything away from your quota.

You get 30 days doing this (rather than the 60 you would get with a visa) and you can extend by 30 for 60 total (rather than 90 with a visa+extension).

If you do a run on Dec 6 you would be stamped until Jan 4, with extension until Feb 3.

You could then at that point either do a visa run to Vientiane for a further three months, with extension, which would bring you through to the start of May, or alternately do another bounce at Mae Sai which would, with extension, get you up until Apr 3.

If you need until end of April, 1 Tourist Visa, extended + 1 border bounce, extended, would get you there. If you are doing that combination, it is better to do the border bounce first, in December, as that will reset on Jan 1 and doesn't "cost" you anything from your quota.

Yes they changed that a few years back, now it is 30 for land visa exempt entries, no 15 any more. And you can extend them by 30, which is also new from a few years ago.

absolutly ... will pull a couple of days out of the calendar.. i was just presuming that you only got 15 days when land crossing.. i guess thats what kept me from going.. :-) but if you get 30 + 30 .. sure.. its a great option..

@Hen***
it is a nice ride, particularly if you do the northern road through Chiang Dao, Fang and Thaton. That is very scenic and a very quiet road. I have cycled it on my pushbike. There is then lots to see as well in and around Chiang Rai such as the White Temple and Black House. The Golden Triangle is perhaps also worth a loop. And then you could come back by the main road. Certainly plenty to see up there if you have the time to take a few days to do it.

Check the date stamped when you apply for your Extension of Stay, before midnight that day you have to leave Thailand. You can apply for a new Single Entry Tourist Visa at the Thai Consulate in Vientiane, apply day 1, pick up next working day. For other advises and travels I suggest you use the search button as they way to get to this Thai Consulate are many times mentioned.

Just be aware of your stamped date admitted until when you make a schedule. Enter date is day 1 and October has 31st, that means the last day cannot be 8 Dec...

yep.. haven't done the extension yet.. will do next month..

You can know (calculate) if you check your current stamp.
Ivan ************
He hasn't extended yet so he doesn't know what the stamp will say. It presumably currently says Nov 6
Robert *******
It is the day mentioned in the stamp.

Flying to Udon Thani and getting to the border (Nong Khai) from the airport is super easy. Cheap minibuses directly to the border, and takes around an hour! I really recommend that way over buses overland!

Ritght.. got it .. :-)

Nong Khai doesn't issue a tourist visa, you would need to go to the consulate in Vientiane to get that and stay over at least one night. If you return at Nong Khai without doing this you would get a visa exempt entry (30 days).

@Henrik *******
So you need to exit Thailand through Nong Khai, then get a songtaew/taxi to the Thai embassy in Vientiane where they will issue the visa
