What are the current challenges with visa exempt entries in Thailand for expats?

For those who have seen my previous post, here an update (posting from my wife FB): Dec 11, I got denied a 60 dsys visa exempt entry in Nong Khai. Yes, I've been pushing my luck for far too long

Despite being married and my Thai wife being with me, they are currently cracking down on visa runners there. Many people got denied that day. I saw the line behind me.

I stayed a few days in Vientiane and got back in tonight using BKK airport priority lane. They have such services in most airport in Thailand but you need an agent help. It's impossible to get denied entry that way, that's all I'm gonna say.

That's all.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user shares an update about being denied a 60-day visa-exempt entry at Nong Khai, noting that there is a crackdown on visa runners recently. Despite being married to a Thai national, the user highlights difficulties faced at the border and mentions using a priority lane at Bangkok airport for re-entry, which seems to mitigate denial risks. Comments suggest varying opinions on the evolving visa landscape, emphasizing the need for proper residency visas over frequent border runs.

How many times did you did the border run before you were refused entry? If I may ask?
Nick *******
Who cares
Dirk **************
Why don’t you get a Non-O based on marriage???????????????
Mike ********
So much for the people posting, you have unlimited border bounces now with the new 60 day exempt ?
Brandon ************
@Mike *******
no legal limit is not the same as unlimited.
Mike ********
@Brandon ***********
So how many bounces after the usual 2 would be pushing it ?
Brandon ************
@Mike *******
some people have been getting pulled out of line after 1 border bounce if they did the full 60 days plus a 30 day extension then left and immediately returned. It's pretty obvious to immigration they're only trying to get more time and not traveling. Visa exempt and tourist visas are for tourists not for trying to live in Thailand. 180 days doesn't seem like someone on holiday.
Nick ************
How many times had you entered visa exempt this year? That would be useful information.

he has been in Thailand half of his adult life, married for part of it yet still doing the border runs …. I can see how he will establish himself as a go-to-adviser for certain part of the membership of this FB group.

@Nick ***********
he's been border bouncing for years

If your wife is Thai, why do you just don't get a Non-O Visa ffs.

, thanks for the update.

I sent you a DM about something you raised in your post, wanting to know more.

Cheers.

That's the right expression "playing the system" which the OP also admits. Not 'abusing' the system, because there is no official rule for these exempt entries.
Michael *******
They are also questioning folk over 50 more frequently now, a kiwi mate who comes out 2-3 times a year for 4-6 weeks at a time( doesn’t live here) has been asked on arrival in Phuket on last two visits why he doesnt get a retirement visa ? The IO’s are merely doing their job, finally …….when the ETA is introduced it will become virtually impossible to game the system as technology will reject frequent flyers…..without correct visa. Marriage, Retirement, and DTV avail now and they want them used….Thailand is entering the 21st century……..better get used to it and plan accordingly I guess……
Endre ********
Can't you do 2 border runs bye land a year now 🤔
Elías ********
@Endre *******
In theory, there's no limit now, but if you don't look like the typical tourist, they can and will deny you entry, regardless of it being the first, second or third entry this year.
Elías ********
(By looking as the typical tourist I'm not talking about appearance, but the records on their system. If you spent like the last 5-6 years in Thailand but entering and exiting without a visa, they will safely assume you're not a tourist).
Peter ****************
@Endre *******
What I read is that there not seems to be any limited entries of 2 times with exempt entry by land anymore as before. But.......as you can read by the OP after a couple of times you push y'r luck if they think/see y'r trying to live in Thailand by using those exempt entries.

What’s a priority lane, and how do you get to be in it?
Maxim ***********
I went through a standard priority lane, people there didn't look old nor disabled. I think business class can go through this line. But I skipped the priority lane straight through the booth with officer who greeted me at the entrance. She opened her booth just for me. I just skipped through ahead of people as you do if you are able to miss your flight, for example.
Pe ****
@Maxim **********
Elderly. Check.

Disabled. Must buy wheelchair.

Agent. Will ask MI6.
Andy **********
@Maxim **********
so you didn't use an agent to get you back into Thailand?? Did you get a denied entry stamp at the nong khai border?? What happened when you went back to the Lao border, after being denied entry into Thailand?? Did you need to buy another visa?? When you checked in for your flight to BKK, did they ask for a flight ticket leaving Thailand?? I've been wondering how you got on.
Maxim ***********
@Andy *********
You don't get a denied entry stamp. Officer says you're there too often so they send you to the supervisor room. The supervisor write some stuff on a paper with reason of denial (they can't write "too many entries" so they make something up). He also enter you in the computer system. Then I take the bus to the Laos side again, and I show them the paper and they direct me to a room where they will undo my used Laos visa stamp (as if I never left Laos). So no, I don't pay the Laos visa twice.

I did use an agent, but the agent is never the person waiting for you. The agent is in an office somewhere in Thailand. The agent work with immigration officers. An officer will wait for you near an immigration gate in the airport. They have your picture so they know what you look like. Then you follow the agent through the priority lane to her booth. She's the one who give you the 60 days stamps. So basically the agent work directly with one or more of the immigration officers who stamp your passport at BKK airport.

I would guest that every single officer who work in priority/business line at airport work with one or more agent to make extra money. It's easy extra money for them. And no, you don't need onward travel, that's the biggest myth ever.
Andy **********
@Maxim **********
thanks 👍
Brandon ************
@Maxim **********
Onward travel is not a myth. It's a legal requirement. At Chiang Saen and Chiang Khong it's literally required before they will even let you do a border bounce along with the cash. And all you have to do is read Facebook enough to see even recently people have been asked by immigration for no apparent reason. Is it common? Of course not, but it's certainly not a myth.
Andy **********
@Pe ***
there is a standard priority lane, it seems to be for elderly or disabled people, or if someone has paid extra to basically jump the queue, the op used an agent to guarantee his safe passage through the immigration, and back into Thailand, they two completely different things.
Tony **********
@Pe ***
you can pay for a short line, are disabled, or are over 70.

It seems like many had too much to drink tonight. What is so hard to understand? I'm not looking for suggestions. I've been in Thailand for more than half of my adult life. I'm simply warning others of the current ever changing situation. It's now harder to border bounce easy border like Nong Khai. That's it.

FWIW, I understood your comment, so thanks for the heads up. Don’t know what is up with all the blowhards, gatekeepers and rule police on here lately. They quickly and half ass run though a post, then think they have to regulate what people do. Geez.
Tony *********
Whats the thai wife going to do . ?? You could of had the thai prime minister and it still wouldn't of helped you as you entered on visa exemption .. ??? So you abused the system when you could of got the Marriage visa

I'll settle down when people stop posting shit that most of us already know . It's common Knowledge that if you intend to enter visa exemption side by side then your going to get pulled up no matter where in Thailand you enter from ..😁😁

@To**
previously there were not issues with the Nong Khai border. So this is new and useful information.

Tony *********
@Sujy ********
you posted you got denied entry therefore you've been abusing the system thus far .. Simple . Get the proper visa and there shouldn't be a problem ... IO has always been cracking down on this for ages. If people keep coming in on visa exemption side by side of course they are going to be pulled up
Sujy *********

I'm in Udon Thani, the prime minister didn't need to save me. I was just pointing up how ridiculous your comment was.

@Tony ********
Correcting misinformation is important. There is no such thing as "IO has always been cracking down...". It's airport and border specific, always has been. I'm simply relying new info about Nong Khai that date max 2 months. The crackdown there is very recent. The crackdown in BKK is ancient. Two different things completely. I'm not looking for help, you completely missed the point of my post. My post is for other runners, not intended to you.

Using Visa Exempt instead of the Visa which you are able to apply for is not what Thai Immigration want. Good information.

why has he not got a marriage visa or if old enough retirement visa, maybe he will come back and say why
David **********
@Graham *****
marriage visa has many issues there are good reasons not to choose it.
Bart **************
@David *********
there are many reasons not to choose it, but then you can't live in Thailand. It's one or the other. It is very well known that you cannot bounce forever.
Frank **********
@David *********
explain that.
Kool *******
@David *********
what reasons? This I have to hear...lolol
David **********
@Kool ******
it is just not a very attractive visa. Retirement visa is better in many ways for over 50s. One issue is that, should one have a dispute with the wife, your visa can be ended the next day and you have to leave the country instantly.
Kool *******
@David *********
well, with the right amount of money in your Thai bank account you can immediately change to a retirement visa extension without leaving the country, but that only applies if you are over 50. The big advantage is being able to legally get a work permit, and a number of other benefits not available at all to retirement visa extension holders. It is a very attractive visa extension for living here long term. As an example you can never apply for permanent residency, or citizenship, on a retirement visa extension. You can on a marriage visa extension. The financial requirement is cut in half also, but for someone thinking their marriage won't last, and is over 50, then yes.
Sujy *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@David *********
No, your marriage extension cannot be ended the next day. You just made that up. And retirement extension is only available if you are a boomer.
David **********
@Sujy ********
it is true if your marriage ends then your marriage visa also ends. Not a very stable visa for many people.
Gary **********
@David *********
have ya got any valid reasons,coz to me I don't think ya have a clue about the marriage visa.
David **********
@Sujy ********
well retirement visa us available from 50 years which is much too young to be a "hoomer". The youngest boomers are already 60 years plus.
Nongnuch ********
@David *********
that's not true. A marriage visa only ends if a family court issues a divorce. Before this happens (and a divorce edict takes a long time!) , no marriage visa ends before its original expiry date
Braulio *********
@Graham *****
Is the OP complaining because he elects not to obtain a marriage visa and decides to game the immigration system?
Martin **************

where do you see him complaining? Read again, OP is explaining his experience and wants to help others.

I'm not complaining. I'm warning others that borders that use to be easy for 20+ years are not since the new 60 days visa exempt.
