TLDR : Answer Summary
To renew your passport while on a DTV visa in Thailand, you should bring both your old and new passports to the immigration office. This is due to the requirement that they may need to see your previous passport for any visas posted in it. It's advised to follow the local customs and practices, as experiences from other expats indicate that having both passports is generally sufficient, and you can receive a stamp for an additional 180 days in your new passport.
I was in the same situation, went home renewed my passport and asked for advice from my embassy. I was told to reapply for a DTV.😠I didn't think it sounded right so ran with advice from this group, turned up with both old and new passports at BKK immigration and not a question was asked. A stamp in the new passport, 180 days in the Land of Smiles.😅

like with any other visa/expired passport...always bring your old passport with you. this is what i do with my indian and chinese visas.

bring both to the immigration office, when you get the new passport.
the immigration office won’t do anything. What in the world are you talking about? Immigration will only transfer a visa or extension of stay if it was issued in Thailand. Not applicable for a DTV
