My dtv 6 months is over. Is okay to go at Laos border and return in the same date, or is better to stay in a foreign country some days before going back?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The question discusses the feasibility of making a same-day border run to Laos after the expiration of a 6-month DTV visa. Responses highlight that while many have successfully performed same-day returns without issues, some suggest it's safer to stay a couple of nights abroad to avoid potential complications or scrutiny from immigration authorities. Various experiences, suggestions for reliable border run services, and advice on immigration practices are also shared in the comments.

Yes, you can do a same-day border run. There’s no rule that you must stay outside for a certain number of days. Just make sure your DTV is still valid and you re-enter before it expires. Entry is always at immigration’s discretion, but same-day runs are commonly done.

Same day border runs at land border crossings are best done with a specialized company, because IO's on these border crossings sometimes have own rules.

For now your point re-enter before it expires does not make any sense, DTV does not exist 5 years, so no expired DTV's anytime soon.

Yes — flying out and back in is usually the better option compared to doing a Laos land border run.

Why flying is often better:

It looks more like a normal trip (not a “border run”)

Land borders are used a lot for visa runs → immigration may ask more questions

Airports are often smoother and faster for DTV re-entry

Yes — you can usually do a same-day border run (Laos out + back in the same day) on DTV, as long as your DTV is still valid and it’s a multiple-entry visa.

But here’s the real-world answer:

✅ Same-day is often fine

⚠️ Staying 1–3 nights outside Thailand is “safer” if you want to reduce questions.

What immigration may care about

When you re-enter, they mainly look at:

Your DTV validity (still active)

That you didn’t overstay

That you are not abusing entry rules

Your proof of funds (sometimes)

Your reason for staying (training/workcation/etc.)

Best practice (recommended)

If you want the smoothest re-entry:

Option A (most common)

Same-day border run

→ Works for many people.

Option B (safer)

Stay in Laos 1–2 nights

→ Makes it look more like a normal trip, fewer questions.

Laos borders that are commonly used

Nong Khai ↔ Vientiane

Mukdahan ↔ Savannakhet

Chiang Khong ↔ Huay Xai (more for northern Thailand)

Quick warning

If you have a history of many long stays back-to-back, immigration can become stricter — even if your visa is valid.

GreenNarwhal2411 Denied entry into Nong Khai at the bridge? Did you know for 70 baht you can take the train across the bridge, and there is a different immigration checkpoint at the station?

As far as I'm aware no where in the DTV regulations or validity requirements is returning same day a violation.

Only speculation from the crack down on NON visa holders. You hold a 5 year visa, I see no issues with it

I can recommend a company that will take you from DTV to the Laos border in a comfortable minivan.

Or the option I used myself: fly to the nearest airport to the border, and the company provided me with a driver who took me to the border by car, handled all the stamps in about half an hour, and then drove me back to the airport.

However, this airport service only runs 2–3 times a week, so I recommend booking in advance.

Write me a private message and I’ll share the contact.

Always better to stay out for a few nights. You may be fine doing an immediate return but it introduces risk. Why would you do that instead of a guaranteed seamless entry at BKK, that's the real question.

many will be gone now 60 day visa exemption being slashed to 30 days …Facial Recognition Cameras are a great success, Thai police/immigration have rounded up quite a few foreigners criminals wanted in their own countries, so deportations and bans coming up , all good news for law abiding expats etc

I did a same day bounce to Laos in late December at the Chiang Khong crossing. I hired a driver/agent to escort me into Laos and back. I probably would have been fine by myself but didn’t want to take the chance. If you live in Chiang Mai, I can recommend a good driver/agent.

You Asked this same question on the Thai Visa Advice forum and you have the Correct answers.

Obviously you are still looking for that magical answer that you want to read.

You failed to say where you are located in Thailand and what your passport nation is.... ????

My suggestion is to use an experienced border run service company to take you to the border, exit and reenter the same day.

Good Luck 🍀

I did a visa run from Phuket to Myanmar same day and after, that gave me a lot of trouble. My Thai gf saved me. I would strongly suggest to stay at least one night abroad
