What is the process for re-entering Thailand on a DTV after leaving with an ED visa?

Left the country on a multiple re-entry stamp on an ED. Applied and approved for the DTV.

Do I re-enter on the ED, cancel it, leave and then re-enter on the DTV.

Or, can I enter on the DTV and the ED automatically cancels out?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The question revolves around the process of re-entering Thailand after having left the country on an ED visa with a multiple re-entry stamp and having applied for a DTV visa. The consensus in the comments suggests that the ED visa will not automatically cancel upon re-entry with the DTV visa. The recommended approach is to enter Thailand on the DTV visa and then proceed to cancel the ED visa with the necessary paperwork from the educational institution.

Let us know how you handle the ED visa please I am in the same boat. It seems tricky to ask to get in with the new visa and then cancel the old one inside the country.

you're asking a question I would say few if any people experienced yet seeing as the DTV is just a month old

For sure the ED extension will not "automatically cancel out" and you'd take paperwork from your school and go cancel it after you're back

Now how you go about entering the country is anyone's guess, I'd say talk to the officer at passport control stamping you in, see what they say. I'd probably stamp IN on the DTV, then go cancel the ED extension at your immigration office with school paperwork

BUT

That's just how I'd do it

Are there rules against applying for a new visa, while you have a valid one in your passport? My logical guess would be yes, but it seems like that might not be the case?

does not appear to be anything written

will ask the IO. As you know though - some are super helpful, the rest not as much.

Well your objective is to get ON the Destination Thailand Visa so I'd enter on it and deal with the ED extension after you're stamped in on the DTV

there shouldn’t be any issue cancelling an ED visa after entering on another visa?

Do you know of any other people who have entered on another Long term visa - while still on an ED and then cancelled the ED after?

i know people who have entered on Non-Immigrant visas (90 day stamp) and then went to cancel their ED visa extensions

they were fined 500 baht a day from the date the documents on the school paperwork said they stopped studying until the day they cancelled it

But if somebody cancels the ED extension before the date on school paperwork, there's no fine, right? (Regarding exactly the same situation).

that's for you to find out when you visit the Thai Immigration office to cancel the Ed Visa. AND you have to get the cancellation at the Thai Immigration office which issued the Ed Visa stamp.
Yunus *******
@James *******
do you have to go to the exact same immigration office in person that issued the visa?
James ********
@Yunus ******
Yes ! The Thai Immigration office that placed the Ed Visa stamp in your passport.

If the ED visa expire before you get back into Thailand then it's fine?
James ********
@Ryan ***********
no it is not fine. You were responsible to cancel it before you left Thailand.

@James *******
it's the same for all ED visa? Because before I had Thai language school Ed visa and before 1 month it's finished, I got online university Ed visa from buriram without leaving Thailand. So not sure if that officer who got me the new visa cancelled the old one without having to leave. My thought process was to go outside Thailand 1 month before my Ed expire and try to get the new DTV but if I couldn't get it for some reason, I would still have my Ed visa to fall back on and get a new one. So now I guess I have to go to buriram regardless.

if you were in the first 90 days of the Ed Visa, you could just leave Thailand and the Ed Visa has ended.

It's when you get 90 days extensions for the Ed Visa which then requires it to be cancelled before you leave Thailand.

It appears that you got the university course of study arranged with both the university and possible Thai Visa Agent. And the Ed Visa continued with support of the Thai Immigration office.
Ryan ************
@James *******
this one I got it directly from the immigration officer but I see your point. So I still need to cancel this before leaving for the DTV application right?
James ********
@Ryan ***********
Yes if you are on extensions of your Ed Visa, (beyond the first 90 days that the Ed Visa was issued) you will need to cancel the Ed Visa before you leave Thailand.
Ryan ************
@James *******
oh I see that's good to know. In my case it's not extension AFAIK. It's a one year visa stamp. I never have to do extension for this one except doing 90 day reports online.
Tod *********
@Ryan ***********
you are confused a bit, READ your stamp, I think you'll see that it says "extension of stay permitted until" and has a date (even though it's a year out)
James ********
@Ryan ***********
IF you did not cancel the Ed Visa... it needs to be cancelled. Let's Ask

to review this.
