Can one apply for DTV online on thai e-visa, before returning to home country on a re-entry permit ?

I currently hold a business visa and would like to switch for DTV, but seems kind of risky to cancel my current visa before traveling to home country to apply for DTV

TLDR : Answer Summary
You cannot apply for the DTV while still in Thailand; it should be done from your home country after exiting Thailand. If you hold a business visa with a re-entry permit, you must cancel the permit at Immigration before leaving. Once your DTV is approved from your home country, you can return to Thailand and then cancel your Non-B visa thereafter.

You can’t apply for the eVisa from Thailand. You have to be stamped out at the very least. If you have a current re-entry permit you have to cancel that at Immigration before you leave.

that is not quite correct

Reports from many people say they have left thailand on valid visa extensions w/re-entry permits, GOTTEN the DTV entered thailand on it (telling the officer at passprot control they want to enter the country on the DTV,) then went to the immigration office and cancelled the extension after they got back

I guess there is a possibly that would work (just like some people reported that they applied and obtained their DTV while still in Thailand on another visa or exemption). Would I risk it? Maybe not especially if you have to go to Immigration anyway upon return to cancel it out. Another guy said the consulate in Vancouver told him they would cancel it there which sounded odd but hey, Thailand. 😂

an embassy/consulate (especially one that issued eVisa) can't cancel an extension OR a visa issued by another consulate (that was totally b/s from the consulate)

There are many reports of people who weren't sure they were going to get the DTV issued keeping their current extension buying a re-entry permit going to a thai consulate to get the DTV and then telling passport control when they stamped in that they want to get stamped in on the DTV.

After they got back they went to the immigration office where they got the extension and cancelled it without issue

How do you leave a re-entry?

@Gr**
what exactly do you mean? For example, many people get a multiple re-entry permit in one go when they are at the Immigration office so they wont have to deal with it later. It’s valid until the end of the extension of stay. In that case, leaving the country won’t automatically cancel out the underlying visa. But if you have none then leaving will render it void and you couldn’t re-enter under this record. The IO at the airport will warn you of this and refer you to the RE Permit counter in case you want to return on the same visa.

@Seb *******
Are you sure the IO warns people? Plenty of posts where people leave and visa cancelled as no re-entry permit. Not warned and had to start again.

I always have multi re-entry Permit and have had since 2017. Just get it at visa renewal so save hassle. When I was changing from O to B I was told leave in the O. Upon return ask at immigration to ignore re-entry and come in on Visa Exempt. They would not allow it. I then had to go and have O visa cancelled at office it was issued (pay for the privilege). Then leave again and come back on Visa Exempt. Then fly out again for a B. What a palaver. Now I should have gone to Immigration and cancelled O first time. No matter in the end. Had 2 very nice expenses paid 4 night 5* star stays in Singapore out of it. No idea how it will work with the DTV.
Greg ********
So you leave on the B with a re-entry permit. Apply for DTV in home country? Who cancels the B? Does that not have to be Immigration? The only reason I ask is that I left in an O alwith a multi re-entry. Wanted to come back in on Visa Exempt so O visa cancelled. Immigration at Bangkok would not allow me. Had to go to Immigration to have O cancelled. This is not the same situation though but just highlighting Immigration are not predictable

on non-b you just leave without getting a re-entry permit and that visa is over.

I had a muitli re-entry. Immigration would not stamp me in Visa Exempt on an O so I could apply for a B. I could not got from an O to a B. I had to get O cancelled. Do a visa run to get Visa Exempt. Fly to Singapore to get 90 day B. Come back and get B extended to 2 years at BOI One Stop Shop

you can apply for the DTV once you are actually IN your home country 🙂

get it approved, then come in on it

Then you can go cancel the Non-B visa/extension after you get back

just want to double check I am understanding this correctly. You can apply for the DTV while on a non-b with valid work permit, provided you are outside of the country?
James **********
@Jasmien ******
yeah your work permit is meaningless if you’re not on the correct visa.

So leave, get dtv, come back - cancel work permit.

@James *********
thanks, so you receive the DTV and immediately use this to enter, no issues at immigration having another active visa with re-entry stamp?

Is it no issue for the embassies to apply for the DTV while still having a valid visas? Any differences in processing these cases in the neighbouring embassies?
Tod *********
@Jasmien ******
no difference, go get the DTV when you come in, tell the officer you want to stamp IN on the DTV visa, then go to the immigration office and cancel the Non-B extension once you're back
James **********
@Jasmien ******
hmmm - don’t get the re-entry stamp when you leave… so then your current visa is closed.
Tod *********
@James *********
that is not correct 😕 an extension doesn't CANCEL just because you stamp out 😕
James **********
@Tod ********
mine does - 3 month non-b for employment.

If I don’t get the re-entry permit it’s closed and I need a new visa.

I acknowledge it might be different for the longer visa.
