I’m currently on an education visa, valid until May 2025. However I will apply for the DTV next week in Laos. Embassy in Vientiane says I don’t need to cancel my current visa before applying for a new one because it’s a different type of visa. So, I am considering getting a re-entry permit so I can come back on my current visa in case my DTV application is denied. Do you think that reentry permit would create a problem with getting the new visa?

Someone already reported doing exactly that, getting the re-entry permit and then getting the DTV and not having any issues getting back into Thailand.

If you are currently on an ED extension, you do have to cancel that once you get back to Thailand though. Or you can be fined in the future not having done so since you signed a document that said you would inform immigration if your situation changed.
