Has anyone transitioned from an ED visa to the DTV? (Yes I am aware you would need to cancel the ED visa before applying for a new visa) Also wondering if the DTV can be used for University courses, since is seems generally better than an ED.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is possible to transition from an ED visa to a DTV visa, as confirmed by multiple users. One user mentioned successfully making the transition and noted that while the DTV is not intended for studying, it is essential for your visa to match your purpose in Thailand. Additionally, another user contacted the Immigration Hotline, which confirmed that you can cancel the ED visa after the DTV visa has been approved.

Sharing that I called the Immigration Hotline and they confirmed that you can cancel your ED visa after your DTV is approved. It shouldn't be a problem. If it will help for others to validate you may call 1178 (from Thailand).

Yes, I was on ED and now DTV. There are several posts about that here in the group you can use the search feature. the DTV is not for studying but not sure it would matter but the type of visa you are on should reflect your purpose for being in Thailand. I think that's the best answer I can give.

you can ask the school for the letter to cancel the visa and bring it to immigration to cancel by yourself. It’s free

My school did it for me but I had to pay them to do it. Otherwise you can just go to your local immigration but the school should be helping you with that.

I seem to remember those trying to use education for the soft power category of the DTV being told to get an ED visa

100%, thats the purpose of the ED visa, not the DTV visa. Your visa needs to align with your intention for being in the country. Obviously the DTV is a better visa financially and length of stay so I would recommend if you want the DTV to apply under the proper categories so you won't get rejected.

can you show me where it says that? Soft power activities according to the announcement and what people have been approved for include what I screenshotted below.

Education visas are for studying, DTV visas are for cultural and medical activities and the remote working option.
