Should I apply for DTV and then let my ED visa expire just coming back into Thailand with DTV? I read today that otherwise cancelling the ED visa requires one to go to the exact same imm office to do so. Any ideas?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster is contemplating whether to allow their Education (ED) visa to expire and apply for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) upon returning to Thailand. They mention concerns regarding the cancellation process, especially if an extension of stay is involved. Commenters clarify that a visa can be allowed to expire, while an extension must be canceled with a letter from the educational institution. They also discuss the requirement to go to the same immigration office where the visa was issued for cancellations.

Just had our extension cancelled at immigration and it'a easy to do. Just make sure school gives you a letter saying you are finished or giving reason why cancelling

Did you go to the same immigration office they issued the visa?

yes that's easy, the issue is the immigration I went to get the visa is quite far so don't get the reason to have to go there. I will ask local immigration first.

Get a visa cancellation letter from your University and get it cancelled at immigration as that's what they ask for. An extension of stay is also part of the visa (if you have one) as you can't have one without the other.

I don't mind doing this but having to go to the same immigration office will be costly time and money wise.

If you're on an actual visa you can just let it expire but if you're on an extension of stay you need to cancel it. Check your passport

no it's not extension. I really have 1 year visa stamp on my passport. I only have to do 90 day reports online. So you are saying let it expire outside Thailand before flying in with the new DTV? Or just fly in with the DTV and the ED will expire by itself? I just don't know if the border or airport will know which visa to use if they are both active.

if you have an actual visa and leave without a re-entry permit it will cancel when you exit the country.

mine has multi entry permit.

then it will not cancel until it expires naturally. I have heard of people being issued a DTV but they were on extensions of stay rather than an actual visa. I don't think it's possible to hold 2 visas simultaneously

Are you really on a Non-ED Visa or an Extension of Stay? CEOs has to be cancelled, you cannot cancel a Visa.

I am on ED visa (online university)

So you've never gone to Immigration to get an Extension of Stay stamp, you have just one Non-ED stamp and nothing more?
