📲⚡ Mobile Data Question ⚡📲

Last trip to Thailand I got an AIS 5G SIM card and I was getting lag when using instagram (videos and posts slow to load). This time I got a AIS 4G SIM and it's basically the exact same speed. I did a speed test and it's about 10MBS.

I learned from a visit to the AIS store with help from a local that they throttle speeds for foreigners, and if I want a faster speed, I need a plan/contract, but that it requires a Work Permit, which I don't have. But I do have LTR visa.

Wondering what you recommend for the fastest, best value mobile data SIM card that I can get on a LTR visa.

Thanks! 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat in Thailand is seeking recommendations for the best mobile data SIM card option that offers good value and speed while holding an LTR visa. The conversation reveals that speed throttling typically occurs on prepaid plans, and users recommend considering postpaid plans even without a work permit. AIS and TrueMoveH receive mentions for various pricing and speed options, including annual plans and special promotions. Users highlight their personal experiences with mobile data, discussing the pros and cons of different providers, plans, and devices used, such as eSIMs and prepaid options.

Depending on your package. I have Dtac 30mbps unlimited bought from shopee 1.3k baht running as home wifi, speed test average 20mbps which sufficient enough.

While my mobile using postpaid Ais iphone 1099b unlimited 5G monthly, i download a lot / game on my pc(tethering). Prior to that on fixxy 3xxbaht 25mbps unlimited postpaid, no issue

I have AIS prepaid unlimited data (฿1200/year) on my old phone Speedtest 10 down/20 up (not sure if throttled because I’m a dirty Farang but only 1 bar reception), 60 down, 6 up on True 5g postpaid. Also 1 bar reception

I had true move 300baht per month, unlimited

You’re buying a card with a plan already activated on it and you’re preparing for it.

Those plans are usually awful.

Just get a regular SIM card with no prepaid plan, find the plan you want, add that amount to it at the AIS booth or a mini mart and buy it.

Install the AIS mobile app to make the process easier.

They still have the most convoluted list of plans of any carrier but at least with the app they’re easier to search through and select.

The SIM has nothing to do with what plan you choose or whether or not it’s 4G or 5G.

The SIM just identifies your device on their network.

It’s all about the plan you choose.

So don’t buy the ones with the plan prepaid on them already. They’re a rip off.

You don’t need a post paid contract to get faster speeds, that’s also nonsense.

They want to see a work permit for post paid because they’re letting you pay after you’ve used the service and they know if they let everyone do that, tourists would just sign up for a bunch of things, run up a bill then leave the country without paying.

At least if you work here you’re less of a risk of skipping out on payment.

how/where do I get the sim card (with no plan already on it) in the first place? I'm guessing I can't put a new plan on my current AIS sim that's slow via the myAIS app?

Paranoia is real...

After 7 years in Thailand, I still cannot make any sense from the various plans and deals available... Never mind their apps such as AIS.

I just want pre paid, unlimited, full speed. Just tell me the goddamned price and I'll pay it...

Don’t forget you hv to hv a 5G capable mobile and be in the area of a 5G tower signal - I use a True mobile sim for last 5 years - currently 70GB per month allowance - free true to true calls for approx 1200baht per year - using mobile as a hotspot will use more data than direct and the hotspot mobile device will get very hot - downside need to change mobile number every year - to get round that my original tourist number is kept alive and forwards calls / messages to current number - saves changing with bank etc

mainly use line / messenger for calls

AIS is fine, i have a post paid business plan with them and my family have prepaid "tourist" sims, both have very fast speeds on 4 and 5g. I have a teenager so i would know all about it if it was slow

Rubbish! Complain to them !!

Every provider worldwide throttles after a certain amount of data usage ( they say unlimited data, but it becomes barely usable after X GB. The attached screenshot is with dtac in Bangkok. Slower than in Europe, but still good enough for me. They asked me for a work permit, too. I offered to pay by automatic card payment which they accepted. Guess they just want proof that you have a regular income to pay your bills. Otherwise you’ll be stuck on prepaid. I didn’t like prepaid especially when i ran out of data when trying to check into places with that thaichana covid app. Allowing me to check in and "protect people by allowing me easy contact tracing showed them my good intentions 555

I have an s21 ultra I've never had that issue. I've always been on the travel sim card. Almost always have pretty fast does

I have had zero issues my last 3 or 4 trips using AIS. I bought the unlimited fasted plan for 30 days. Wicked fast, not throttled and unlimited data. Voice/video calls no problems.

where did you get your SIM cards? Got mine from the booths right after you get off the plane at BKK airport

The problem with this starts when the new month arrives in my experience. Never seem to be able to simply pay the same again for the same plan.

can you do unlimited mobile hotspot with this? And what speed are you getting with this plan when you do a speed test?
Luc ************
@Ray ****
speed is advertised as low but i use this one as a hotspot on an old mobile. Connection with 2 mobiles and 1 laptop with Netflix and another one on YouTube is no problem.
Luc ************
And you can get a yearly for 1200baht. Have this one for years, works perfect.
Chris *******
Here is the yearly plan that AIS doesn't really acknowledge for foreigners.

We are on our second year and it's great, can't beat 1790b for an entire year!

100g highspeed per mth

*unlimited at the throttled dpeed*

How does it work when you have a existing AIS number?

it would be a new number

A bit of a pain having to change your number every year. Thank you for the info.

@Brigitte *******
Most phones have 2 sim card slots.
Chris *****
I'm not vouching for that seller, but I'm on my 5th month of an annual AIS one from lazada, similar price. They send a SIM then you upload photos etc to register. They vary by speed.

sounds too good to be true! If you order through Lazada, they just send you a sim?

@Ray ****
yes they send that card, with a sim.

Simple setup.

you would have to look at the packages they have many
Garrett ***********
You don't need a workpermit for a post paid plan. Whoever told you that is a moron. Also they don't throttle speeds for foreigners, they do for pre-paid plans. And every Thai person I know is on a prepaid plan because it doesn't require a commitment.

You're probably on a tourist sim though. You need to go to an AIS shop and get an actual plan, that gives you fixed data speeds. I have

mbps up and down for 200 baht a month.

maybe they were referring to a non post paid plan? 🤔 Does post paid plan include a phone number? Because I think the plan they were telling me about included a phone number and may e that's why it required a work permit? 🤔
Brandon ************
@Ray ****
of course it includes a phone number. It's a cell phone plan. You even get to pick your number. But it only requires a passport not a visa.
Brandon ************
You definitely don't need a work permit for a post-paid plan. I got one when I was on a tourist visa before I even got my ED visa.

Just go into an AIS store in a big mall (I did mine at Emquartier) and tell them you want a post-paid long-term plan. They should have lots of promotional rates and posters around and stuff with various options to choose from.
Ahmed *******
@Brandon ***********
totally agree . I did mine at terminal 21 in bkk before my ed visa and been 15 months super high speed

Brandon ************
@Ray ****
I've used mobile hotspot to work from my laptop a few times when hotel wifi wasn't cooperating. It proved good enough but I've never relied on it 100%
Brandon ************
@Ray ****
I have an unlimited 4G plan. I couldn't justify 5G for the increase in price over 4G. Plus if I ever truly need 5G I can buy a 5G topup for like 10-50GB of 5G usually between 30-100₿. But I'm connected to WiFi most of the time anyways. It's definitely slow at times and I find myself disabling and re-enabling mobile data which helps sometimes.

, 148 Mbps is quite good even on a landline.
