TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around obtaining health insurance at the age of 77 for expatriates considering retirement in Thailand. Several contributors suggest that it may be challenging to find a provider willing to insure someone at that age, and many mention high costs and limited options available. Insurers often have age limits for new customers, with some accepting applications up to 75 but offering continued coverage until 84. Opinions vary on whether it's better to self-insure or to purchase insurance, with some suggesting that individuals set aside funds for potential healthcare needs instead. Resources like WR Life and Bcare Brokers are mentioned as potential contacts for insurance information.

My thoughts as well. Insurance companies rip off

No. They will show you insurance, but what it will pay if you’re seriously ill, even if it’s not excluded due to being deemed a pre-existing condition, will be not much more than your annual premium. Might as well self insured.

Self insure. Pacific Life accepts new policies through age 74. Requires many examinations to prove your health. Any health related issues are not covered . If you had a history of hypertension ( high blood pressure) you will not be covered by potential complications such as stroke or heart attack. You will be covered for accidents and food poisoning. Less expensive to just pay cash which is still very inexpensive.

My dad is 79 and just got insurance with LMG through a Luma salesperson. It was not too expensive (around 23,000/yr if I’m remembering correctly) but not a comprehensive plan.

You can use the government hospitals

Yes you have pay for the service but it's a lot cheaper than private hospitals or insurance,

The cost to us is 25% more than the thai people

@John *******
it depends on the hospital and the province, I paid 9000 THB to get an injection in a government hospital, that same for Thai would cost 30 THB.

@John *******
My last stay in the government hospital here I paid the same price as thai people

@Peter ******
it’s almost not worth getting and then just paying for treatment, as and when needed. Is insurance a requirement for a retirement visa?

treatment if a serious condition can cost several millions baht

Probably is better to self insure as people will get their claims denied anyway due to undisclosed pre-existing conditions, insurance cancelled also

@Peter ******
I know a couple of retirees who chose that option. They keep a chunk of cash aside for potential medical visits. Insurance companies will do everything they can, to avoid paying claims.

How much should you keep aside

@Rick *******
for serious illness upto $50-100K

@Rick *******
I think they kept around 300k baht. But I guess it would depend on your age or potential existing conditions. They’re early 60’s, in fairly good health.

Your choice will be very limited, most won't take on new clients of your age

@John *********
do u know the upper age?
John **********
@Graham ******
it varies by insurer. I use AIA and their upper limit for new customers is 75 but once a customer they will continue up to the age of 84. Once you hit 84 you're on your own.
