What happens if my friend overstays his visa in Thailand by 1 day and requests a denied extension?

Asking on behalf of someone else: A friend arrived on a 30-day visa exemption, then extended it for another 30 days. He made a mistake booking his ticket out of Thailand, so in total he'll be in the country for 61 days, not 60 as legally allowed.

He knows he can request an additional extension that will be denied, giving him an extra 7 days to leave. His question is: will that 7-day deadline be stamped anywhere on his passport, and will it cause him any problems if he wants to come back to Thailand?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A friend was in Thailand on a 30-day visa exemption, extended once for another 30 days, leading to a total stay of 61 days. He asked if requesting an additional extension would cause issues. Responses indicate that requesting a denied extension will result in a stamp on his passport for an additional 7-day extension. Generally, this stamp does not lead to significant negative consequences when returning to Thailand, and minor overstays (under 24 hours) are typically waived at certain airports.

Do online check in and get out in the neutral airport zone and wait his airplane for 24 hours then no hassle just a bit tired and another experience ticked on the list 😎

Just a suggestion !

I did once in airport Istanbul i waited 26 hours

Sure NOT in Thailand. Once you have bording pass 100% can pass the security check point .

Hmmm, I'm not sure if you can clear security 24 hours before your flight. Have you done it yourself out of Don Mueang?

If your friend is near to a border and hasn’t already done two land border crossings on a visa exempt basis already, then that could be an option. Or do the second extension request and have that denied to get the extra 7 days. I think either of those options would be better than an overstay, even of just one day. But that’s just me not being a fan of needlessly staying illegally in any country.

A 7 day extension denied stamp WILL definitely get stamped into the passport BUT at this time there is no negative implications of having one in your passport.

Also as Darren, pointed out a single day overstay especially if flying out (at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang) is waived and all they get is a small overstay under 24 hour stamp (in thai) next to the departure stamp.

That's good to know, thanks!

I also believe (although I have no proof) that the overstay of under 24 hours fine waived stamp ISN'T going to be enough for Penang to deny issuing a tourist visa IF you don't have a passport full of them already and IF you meet the requirements on their website.

No problem, thanks for the info.

you are correct and the thai consulate in Penang does have a warning that they can deny you a tourist visa if you have an overstay stamp in your passport..

You asked if it would cause them any problems if they wanted to come back to thailand, not buy a visa from the thai consulate in Penang. Sorry.

OK, the thing is there are reports of some consulates like Penang not issuing TR visas if there's an overstay stamp. Not sure to what extent that's enforced though

Go t Mai Sua and cross into Burma. 500 Thai Baht or US20. Walk back into Thailand and get a new 30 day.
