What happens if I cannot present my documents to Bangkok Bank within the 30-day notification period?

UPDATE: Girlfriend went to the branch today, it was carnage as it was a branch specific notification she was number 75 in the queue and they were on number 20. At the same time i got through to the Bangkok bank call centre who gave me the direct line for the branch.

Upshot is they had 3 staff dealing with all of the enquiries. My girl was told that after the 30 days the account is closed no exceptions. When I get back I have to present bank book and I'd and they will return my funds and open a new account if I have a long term visa.

As I will have a non o I will go to another bank as I now have money sitting in no man's land for months

Good morning. I know the subject of Bangkok bank has been done to death but bear with me. I opened an account in January visa exempt using an agent. I use the account to transfer money to my girlfriend but it was mainly in preparation for my non o based on over 50. I am currently selling up in Australia and will get my non o here once I have a buyer for my house. Yesterday I got the dreaded 30 days to present at the branch notification. I won't be able to do this within the time but when I do I will have a non o stamp, Thai drivers licence etc.

My question is will they close the account after the 30 days with no contact? And if so can I retrieve the balance once I get to Thailand?

Or will the account simply be suspended pending my documents which it already is effectively as I can't move money in the app.

I have called the help desk but I imagine they are getting smashed due to the number of people who got the notification yesterday. So I hope someone has had experience of this previously. Thank you in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user reports difficulties with Bangkok Bank after receiving a notification to present documents within 30 days. Their girlfriend faced long wait times at the branch, while the user was informed their account would be closed if they did not comply. Comments suggest the account may instead be suspended pending documentation, with suggestions to call the bank or switch to a different financial institution. Several users shared similar experiences, highlighting issues with service and document requirements, leading many to consider other banks for ease of use.

Same situation after getting the "contact the branch within 30 days" notification on the app.

After the second day( not 30) my account was frozen as was the app .

Got ticket at the bank at 2pm and could see alot of foreigners before me.

Long story short I had to resubmit all my documents

Non o visa,phone certificate from true,marriage certificate,bann number book ,wifes i.d etc etc.

Left the bank at 7pm.

My app is back up and running but still cannot access funds they said for a week and to expect a phone call to also confirm im real.

Apparently some people have no available funds other than their frozen accounts and cant even buy food etc.

It is very frustrating and inconvenient for sure.

I ended up sending money with wise to my wifes a/c from my overseas a/c to pay some bills & shopping etc here until i can access my $$ in a week.

I felt sorry for the staff who are being inundated and some people were very angry & rude.

Be polite and calm,its not the staff/tellers fault,alot of staff are having to work longer hours because of this,the poor girl who was very helpful had worked until 10pm the night before and i left at 7pm and there was still a few left. It takes about an hour+ for each person .

As some have mentioned I also had done this a few months ago and got frozen again.

Hopefully this is the last of it and they weed out the scammers 🤷‍♂️.

Have a good evening all 👍🏻🍺

I wouldn’t take there word for it if it was me give your money back hahaha yeah. There staff at each bank must be totally overwhelmed with people turning up with same problem didn’t think this through very well I’m definitely changing banks like many people I have to travel the length of the country to get my money back absolutely crazy
Alastair *******
Time to use another bank? Been very happy with Kasikorn over the years. They seem to understand foreigner money is good for them and the Thai economy.
Peter *******
Problem is everyone is going day 1 of 30
Robert **************
@Peter ******
I would too if they essentially confiscated my money
Frankie *******
Why did u not use the western union transfer n u could hve avoided all these problem

I had another issue. I needed to transfer money to another account. I go to BKK bank to ask them to do the transfer. After one hour, giving all the needed papers. They simply refused to do the transfer. Excuse was, I can not make a transfer after....11 am.

This is BS. I not asked cash, just to make a document, that I sign, that the money gets on the other account. The attitude was not great either.
Max *************
@Martin *********
Why go to a branch for a simple transfer? Why not doing it in the app?
Martin **********
@Max ************
Because my daily limit was reached. I have two accounts in 2 different offices, that on app counts as one
Max *************
@Martin *********
May I ask, what's your daily limit? I can go for 2 million baht if I need.
Martin **********
@Max ************
I needed more in a transaction.

If you opened the account through an agent it will probably be closed as these are the illegal accounts the bank is targeting. You won't lose the money but you will need to be in the country to obtain it. I suggest you get the non-O visa in your home country before coming back and you might be able to reactivate the account, as these visas are legal for bank accounts
Graham ******
@Mark *******
It's not illigal to hold a bank account without a long-term visa, it is internal bank policies
Mark ********
@Graham *****
Illegal or against bank policy. Doesn't make much difference to the account holder does it? 😂😂😂
Graham ******
@Mark *******
is that an admission you were wrong, I'll take that ;)
Mark ********
@Graham *****
Nope! I'm still right. If an agent was used to open an account, a bribe would have been paid to a bank official. Unless of course you're one of these twats who claim "Hey, TiT, corruption of bank officials and government officers is perfectly legal" 😂😂😂
Larry ********
So before all you haters that want to defend everything about Thailand, that everything is great there are alot of things that this country makes it hard for expats.
Trevor *****
@Larry *******
i went in my fav gents club last week a,lady made it hard for me cost me 1.000bt tho but at 68 greatfull.
Glenn *****
@Trevor ****
you overpaid

@Glenn ****
for 3 minuites probably easy job.

@Larry *******
Like in any other country with expats. Just imagine how difficult it is for Thais to go to another country what they have to accomplish until they can enter Western countries. Allway look on both sides. We are foreigners here.
Ian ***********
@Sue *********
Errm, it's possible for a Thai to become for example a British citizen, I'll just leave it there.
Mark ********
@Larry *******
That's very true - but it is what it is. No-one ever said it was a cakewalk. My biggest gripe against expats is they're happy to pay bribes to make things easy, but meltdown when it's not possible.
Larry ********
Bangkok of Bangkok is the worse when it comes to banking. I have been dealing with them for 2 weeks. They are very not willing to assist. I have waited 3 hours 1 day while thai citizens walk right in do not wait in line they walk to the rep at the bank she walks them to a desk......... get a different bank.
Max *************
@Larry *******
Wow, 2 whole weeks? My first account at Bangkok Bank was opened 1996 or 1997 and next one years later, one of the accounts I'm still using. I have NEVER had any problems whatsoever with any of my accounts at Bangkok Bank and I'm quite sure it will be hassle free in the future. Maybe it's karma,who knows. Stop whining!

Learn Thai
Larry ********
@Braulio ********
I don't need to learn thai to be treated fairly. I transfer more money into my account on a monthly basis then the average person probably makes in 5 years.... so a comment like that is stupid. Because #1 I speak and understand thai........... this is a Bangkok bank issue not a Thai issue
Laurie ******
@Larry *******
Well said 👏
Brandon ************
Should just be frozen until you're able to check in
Malcolm *****
@Brandon ***********
able to “check in” as you call it at only one Bank in Thailand - and that is the one you opened the account at.

I’ve done KYC and verification at many financial institutions and no other institution has demanded I go to only one branch/ office that could be thousands of miles away from where I live…. 🙄
Mma *******
I doubt they will close it.

We would need someone to post that they’ve had it closed. I would say suspended until you can provide what they need.

Mine was opened on a work permit and twice its been suspended. Total shit show.
Garrett ***********
What 30 days notice?
Max *************
@Garrett **********
It's about the Personal Information (KYC). You need to update the information and it also includes facial recognition. This is mainly for "relatively" new accounts or if you haven't been that active, meaning you have for example just opened one account and haven't had anything to do with customer service.
Euan ********
Pete *******
Your account is suspended pending security and ID checks. Turn up in person with your Non-O and it will be resolved.
Rick *********
@Pete ******
yup, a month or two ago my account was froze. Went to one of the branches, they wanted to verify me, through my phone provider, passport with non O and did a facial scan to reset it. Was not even the branch I opened the account in. They hooked it fast.
Larry ********
@Pete ******
alot of times it's not resolved I have been here 2 times this month and 1 a few months back for the same thing. With the amount of paperwork they make you fill out ,thru already have this information.
Chris *****
@Pete ******
That’s crazy. I hope I can open another bank account with a different bank as a back up.
Jay *******
@Pete ******
did this 3 weeks ago and mine is frozen now. Had non o, one year rental agreement and verification that the phone number was mine. Waited 5 days and got confirmation that my account was good. I think they want to see the 1 year extension, but no one knows at this point.
Robert **************
@Jay ******
I submitted copies of my o visa with extension. Their receipts for the extension as well as my passport bio page. Hopefully they’ll unlock my account soon. This is a complete cluster fu$k by their own creation. But we as their customers have almost no recourse
Jay *******
@Robert *************
understand what they are trying to do, but they did so with absolutely no care about their customers. Looks very much like they really don't want to do any business with non thais. Non thais have already been fleeing Bangkok bank. This should create a stampede of foreigners taking their business elsewhere. I know i will be opening another account at another bank very soon.
Robert **************
William *********
@Jay ******
they told me that the home office has to approve it. That's why they froze it.
Jay *******
@William ********
I went to the bank on the 31st of July with all paperwork. They made copies and sent to the main office for approval. I got a text 5 days later saying it was approved. Yesterday my account is locked. Like I said, may be related to me being on 90 day non O on July 31. The rules seem to change daily. I'll go get in what I am sure will be a long line tomorrow and find out.
William *********
@Jay ******
yeah maybe or there's been two different things going on. One with the phones and the other with the visas. I did the phone a month ago, then they did this thing with the visa next.
Jay *******
@William ********
I verified my phone number on July 31 with my receipt from AIS, so my number should be good. Had to login using my old number until August 5 when I was approved and able to change my phone number in the app. Everything was good until yesterday so I'm thinking visa issue. But TIT so who knows. I'll post my results tomorrow after I visit the bank
Pete *******
@Jay ******
I don’t understand what you are trying to say. Can you state more precisely your experience?
Jay *******
@Pete ******
a non immigrant O is good for 90 days the extension is for one year. I verified all my information while I was still on the 90 day O. I think they want to see the one year extension but I am not sure.
Robert **************
@Jay ******
I did the same thing. Because I left Thailand just after getting my 1-year extension band didn’t have time to bring the copy to them my account is now locked. My problem is I won’t return to Thailand for 75 more days
Jay *******
@Robert *************
I'm not sure what they will do with accounts of those that do not meet the 30 day deadline
Mark ********
@Jay ******
That's possible. Did you use an agent to open the account?
Jay *******
@Mark *******
yes last year, but I have been in to verify my information with a new visa and verified phone number last month.
Chris *****
@Jay ******
Even after visiting the branch where you opened your account to update everything and they still froze your account now ? WOW 🤦🏻‍♂️
Jay *******
@Chris ****
yes, but i was still on the 90 day O and not the extension. Im hoping that's all they want to see other than what I've given them.
Jeremy ********
Call them up and inquire about it

Explain your circumstances and see if you can get an extension
Braulio *********
@Jeremy *******
and speak Thai
Jeremy ********
@Braulio ********
it’s not that hard with learning the language
Frangipani *******
@Jeremy *******
why don’t you write to them via Bank Mail? They are usually pretty responsive that way.
Frangipani *******
@Jeremy *******
do t you have anything better to do than argue about nonsense? 😂
Jeremy ********
@Frangipani ******
nope because you brought it up

So it was important to you
Jeremy ********
@Frangipani ******
that’s part of an inquiry is it not

Or do I have to explain every avenue of inquiry????
Frangipani *******
@Jeremy *******
???

I simply replied to the author ✍️ advising him to try something that he may not yet have done.

You explicitly told him to call. He did so without success.
Jeremy ********
@Frangipani ******
call is an ambiguous vague word that covers all forms of communication

Or do you want to itemize every single way to communicate at all times
