Will Bangkok Bank be closing all foreign accounts linked to tourist visas?

I just got some very interesting news and wanted to share it here.

Recently, I went back to the Bangkok Bank near Bangkok. Originally, my account had been frozen (like it happened to many others) because the SIM card linked to the account wasn’t in my name, but in my girlfriend’s name. I fixed that issue by switching the SIM card to my name, and after that, my account was unfrozen and has been working fine ever since.

Important detail: When they unfroze my account, they clearly emphasized that the only reason they could do this was because my account had been opened before 2023.

At the same time, I asked—several times, with my Thai wife translating to make sure there was no misunderstanding—what would happen if I switch to a DTV visa, since I am planning to apply for one. They told me very clearly that in that case, they would have to close my account. I already shared this here before.

Today, just out of curiosity, I went to a completely different branch in another city to ask again. This time, the staff told my wife something even more shocking: all foreigner accounts will eventually be closed. Right now, they are working on 2024 accounts, next year it will be 2023, then 2022, and so on. They said it doesn’t matter whether it’s an Education visa, DTV, or any other type—all foreigner accounts are affected.

I honestly find this unbelievable, but that’s exactly what they said, very clearly.

I think this is very important information, and I would really appreciate it if others could go to a branch themselves and ask the same questions to confirm this. Please share your experiences here as well.

This is not meant as a rant or rumor, I am simply sharing what I personally experienced and was told directly. She also said this „update“ is new from this month. So the information from the last branch that everything is fine for accounts before 2023 is old information.

Update: The bank has also recommended the following as the safest visa options right now: Retirement Visa, Marriage Visa, or Work Permit. She mentioned that for now, having a DTV would still be fine until they start closing accounts opened before 2023. However, she advised that switching to a Marriage Visa would be the safest option at this point, based on the new information she has.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The author shares an experience regarding the status of foreign accounts at Bangkok Bank, particularly highlighting a troubling update about accounts linked to tourist visas. Originally, their account was unfrozen after correcting a SIM card issue, but staff informed them that all foreigner accounts might eventually be closed, starting with those opened after 2024. Conversations with bank staff revealed a potential shift in policy affecting various visa types, including Education and DTV visas. Users are encouraged to confirm this information directly at branches and share their findings. Comments reflect skepticism and personal insights about the bank's policies and implications for expats.

Just make sure your girlfriend and your wife don't meet 😲😄

To be fair unless I saw official communiques from the bank I would not be taking the response from one bank clerk as gospel. If you asked a number you would get a different answer from each. You just said you asked 2 and got 2 different answers.

Let’s regroup in 2026 when the banks get out of the current panic mode and start making rationale, feasible and in commercial interest decisions.

Too much headaches. I think safest bet is to look for another country to move to or simply move back hone. Now it's the banking problems, and what problems next? Visa renewal?

Hopefully your wife is happy now that your SIM card is not in your girlfriend’s name.

Maybe they should create a group called : Farangs wanting a thai bank account, I think it will be very active

just ignore my post if is not affect you or you not interested about that.

Anonymous participant you are just stirring things up. Why be anonymous otherwise. It’s always been that some people in some branches give out rogue information or positions - I bet you know that, but present it as fact anyway 🙄🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh look another anonymous account stirring the pot

so true. Some anonymous accounts originate from other SEA countries to give Thailand a bad name. A common deception tactic used since forever is to mix a lie with some truth (or with a lot of truth). Politicians do it often. So folks take anonymous posts like a grain of salt, seek verification from creditable sources.

Again I just share my experience and if someone don’t believe it go to a branch ask them proof that I talk nonsense… people like you are annoying if you don’t care , don’t answer .

They can’t close all foreigner accounts if one of the retirement visa conditions is to have 800k in a Thai bank 🤷‍♂️😄

@Kieran ******
Bangkok Bank can do whatever it wants but would not make sense

@Kieran ******
use another bank for the 800k

Yes all foreigners accounts on visa tourist will be closed; this has been clear for long time already but you can imagine that the banks will not do it at the same time for avoid saturating branches;

It does not include people on long term visa marriage; non b; retiremen; there is only a doubt on Ed visa because it has been used for many years to abuse system; I think for ED will be case by case like real students in famous universities will not have any problems; but all language schools are risky…

I’m not agree with policy and I find it unfair for DTV holder because they are good customers and residents but that’s the politic by bank of Thailand…

Anonymous participant 312 Im Krungsri. I wouldn’t want to lose this account though
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 312 DTV holders are good customers and residents?

DTV holders are no residents, but tourist for a bit longer period.

Why should they be good customers? When I see they mostly want to have an account to use free ATM and QR promptpay I highly doubt they are good customers from the view of the bank. Where will be the profits for the bank?

Anonymer Teilnehmer 312 Like I wrote in in my post, last information (from last month) was that I’m „lucky“ and fine because my account was opened before 2023.
Anonymous ******************
Anonymous participant it’s not about date that you opened your account it’s totally no sense; they are just doing it steps by steps; in Pattaya everyday there are almost 100 people who come for that; the branches are saturating and staff on pressure; the accounts before 2023 will addressed too; the main point is tourist or not

Anonymer Teilnehmer 312 so you mean the bank manager of this branch don’t know what he said? He said this information and update is new from September 2025. and it’s about the date. They told me this in another branch to last month : The reason why the opened my account was it was created before 2023. and he said it 2 times in Thai to my wife and 2 times in English to me.
Anonymous ******************
Anonymous participant he just told you that to avoid putting you in panic; because if you ask to take your funds or close your account you will add again more work to them and now all services are saturated. Be logical; it cannot be related to the date of opening is does not make any sense; I know we are in Thailand but they have a real risk management too; it’s about your current status in the country; if you have long term visa or tourist visa which is logical
Greg ********
Anonymous participant 312 Exactly. "Kreng Jai" all the way.
Kieran *******
Anonymous participant 312 what if you opened the account on a tourist visa but then switched to retirement?
Kieran *******
Ps did this include checking your visa?
Greg ********
@Kieran ******
Should be fine as long as you updated the bank. This route was pretty standard ie open on TR/VE then get O Retirement
Kieran *******
@Greg *******
and I’m assuming that though it seems to be all BB at the moment, the others will follow shortly?
Greg ********
@Kieran ******
My main bank which is not BB has not asked for any updates. They last updated all of my details in May when I changed address at the bank.
Greg ********
@Kieran ******
BB had more issues than others though. This was both in volume and bank staff facilitating scam accounts. My BB account is my secondary account used for Grab and beer money. It was opened on a visa exempt in 2017 at the BB Branch with the most current issues ie Pattaya Klang. Touch wood it has never been frozen or any updates asked for. They know my visa changed to Retirement.
Anonymous ******************
@Kieran ******
there will be no problem because the most important is your current status when you get controlled; even if you are blocked you will be able to fix situation easily because retirement visa is a long term visa that supports bank account
Kieran *******
Anonymous participant 312 yeah this was my thinking. I haven’t actually started the process yet but was lucky to open an account on a visa exemption in readiness for retirement visa
