What has been your experience with re-entering Thailand on a DTV visa after a short trip abroad?

Did my first re-entry with DTV (workaction). I've spent 6 months in Thailand. Left for Vietnam for a week.

No questions asked by the IO. Smiled and stamped me for another 6 months.

Don't listen to the fear mongers, the ones that want to sell you border run services or just salty expats who paid for Elite or are just bitter.

Follow the laws, if your DTV application is genuine you won't have any issues.

Some people have issues and some don't, it's just the truth. Also you stayed out for a week so it doesn't draw as much attention as a one day border run does. I have lived in Thailand for the past 3 years doing border runs on visa exempt stamps and never once had an issue. But some people do 1 or 2 and get refused entry

There are many millions of people entering Thailand, which means they can only check a very small part. Therefore they will try to check people with highest risk, and of those group still only a small percentage will be checked. Logical risk factors are types of visa which are abused much, people getting visa with visa run, people doing border runs. Using probability calculation will show how many people are checked never, and how many people are checked several times with the same chance.

People love to make assumptions based on their own experiences. But let's be honest, the DTV is brand new visa... I've spent 13 years here on a legitimate visa with zero red flags, leaving and re-entering over 100 times, most of the time without any questions. However, I was questioned twice but was still granted entry as I was meeting all visa requirements. Immigration does its job like in any other country.

Someone also never asked about return ticket... Does it mean that this requirement is not existing?

airline will ask

Ask your airline

@James *******
that's visa exemption rule

again I say... Ask your airline. It's not just limited to visa exempt entry... even when flying on a tourist visa , many airlines want to see a flight ✈️ departing Thailand within the number of days you are stamped in for on arrival into Thailand. Very true and happening.

@James *******
again, visa exemtion rules define that return ticket should be. Even you will not asked about it

Airlines are known to ask with other Thai Visas, especially Tourist Visa and METV multiple entry Tourist Visa.

Indeed if your DTV application is genuine there should be no problem.

When they question you, that also should be no problem, because when the DTV application is genuine, you always can proove that easily.

Problems can be expected when you do not comply (anymore) with the requirements.

Correct. A work visa is immediately canceled upon losing a job, and a marriage visa is immediately canceled after a divorce in Thailand. These are due to the requirements of each visa, regardless of whether the visa is valid for a year.

Exactly!

While most people have no issues, that's also how visa exempt is, most people have no issues. But it's best to keep your eyes and ears open to hear what potential issues people may have had so you can be prepared if things turn south. It could save a lot of money in the long run.

You're right. Over time, I've learned how important it is to balance the odds here. The notion of a "genuine visa holder" isn't the same for everyone, and most people assume they fit this category once they obtain a visa. However, that’s not necessarily the case, as maintaining the requirements (as defined by immigration) is another matter. Surely, most people who meet the requirements would never face questions, but random checks are still possible; that's the job of immigration.

Not all border crossings will accept the DTV visa for reentry and or for same day return..... BUT obviously that is of no concern for you. As you seem to know it all.

Reality is, that the experienced border run service company does know and your same day return is without a problem as they have prearranged your passage and reentry.

He spent a week outside the country. Anyone who is genuine and spends a few days outside the country, shouldn't have any issues re-entering.

Many, usually anonymous, who report questioning or other difficulties entering Thailand on a DTV tend not to mention their previous immigration history as well.

Should ban people with retirement visas commenting here, for sure the most bitter
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 411 I don't see why people with retirement visa should be bitter.

I have DTV myself, but when retirement visa was not that unflexible that it is now by having to extend in country every year, I would have applied for retirement visa because that just is a better visa because it is not a tourist visa.

But since I am not living in Thailand and only there for longer periods, retirement visa just not for me now, and till I retire the DTV exactly matches.

Retirement and DTV just are completely different targething completely different groups.

Lots have moved to DTV, as you say, no reason for being bitter... Probably a better deal if able to meet the requirements.
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 601 I do not really see a reason when you have non-o retirement in a legal way, why you should move to DTV, unless you are in the same situation I am in and don't like the inflexibility of the in country extension every year around the same date. And as long as you travel often out of the country the maximum 180 day stay is not really a disadvantage.

Financially the DTV is a bit cheaper in case you do workcation and do not have to spend extra money for soft power, but the differences are not very big and do not justify to have the DTV for that reason, because with DTV you have less possibilities like not opening bank account and only 2 years drivers license.

And when DTV keeps being misused the way it now does, you can also expect stricter checks

Well said, the saltines are very silly.
