What is the process for transferring a visa stamp to a new passport in Thailand, and is a letter from the embassy always required?

Has anyone transferred the visa stamp from your old to new passport lately? I was told that Chiang Mai Immigration needs a visa transfer letter/form signed and stamped from our respective Embassy. Are there any exceptional cases that this letter/form is not required and our visa stamp can still be transferred to the new passport? Kindly assist. Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Transferring a visa stamp from an old passport to a new one typically requires a signed and stamped visa transfer letter from the Embassy. This letter serves as an affidavit confirming that your old passport has been replaced/renewed. There may be some exceptional cases where the letter might not be necessary, but these cases are not clearly defined. Users shared experiences highlighting that obtaining the letter from their respective consulates, especially in Chiang Mai, was an essential step in the process.

Just had done US passport expiring. Had Consulate ( Chiangmai ) replace and provide letter authorizing Thai Govt to transfer stamp, Visa, etc.took 10 days.

However; took 2 months and over 100 calls, emails etc to get in touch with US Consul. to address problem. I only live 2km from Consul. But to show up w/o appt is imposible.

IF you got a new passport inside thailand there's a good chance you got a letter from your consulate stating you DID get a new passport while in the country. How did you manage to NOT get that letter? What is your nationality or better yet, what country does your passport come from ?

Thank you so much for your advice. Due to the Covid 19, many procedures have changed quite a bit. It was a long story but it is okay. Things will get sorted out. Thanks.

@Cor****
maybe if you show the package that you got the passport shipped in from they will bend on the "need the embassy letter" policy up there.. I mean you can't be the first person in the world who had their new passport shipped in

Corrine Chan so you didn't go thru your embassy here to get a new passport ? Instead you got a new one issued from your country while you were here and your family mailed it to you?

What country lets you do that?

how about just CALLING your embassy here and asking them what to do rather than slogging down to Bangkok for no reason? Maybe they can email you a letter or something?

That was a requirement when I transferred a visa (US Citizen). It is basically an affidavit that affirms that your passport has been replaced/renewed.

they include the letter automatically in the US passport packet when you get a passport renewed inside the country.
