Is it normal for the Thai immigration to only require the new passport stamp when transferring from an old passport?

Yesterday I picked up my new passport from the Australian Consulate Phuket. I asked for the letter requesting immigration to change stamps from old to new passport.

I was told that the stamp placed in my passport is all I need. Is this the norm ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster inquired about the process of transferring visas from an old passport to a new one after receiving their new passport from the Australian Consulate in Phuket. They were told by the consulate that the stamp from their old passport is sufficient for Thai immigration. Responses from the community agreed that in many cases, especially in Chiang Mai, the stamp alone is accepted without needing an additional letter. Users also suggested checking local Phuket immigration office procedures. Overall, the consensus indicates that this process is typically straightforward.

No problem. Because I had my new passport mailed to me in Udon, they told me to write my new passport number on the stamp. Then went and transferred to new passport.

you should never write anything in the visa section of your own passport. Iโ€™m surprised any immigration officer would tell you to do this.

That's all I needed in Chiang mai..

As a rule most embassies here give a letter when people renew a passport in country asking immigrations to transfer the stamps

Guess you'll find out when you go to the Phuket immigration office ๐Ÿ˜•

post on a phuket f/b page and ask
