TLDR : Answer Summary
To extend your visa in Thailand based on marriage, you need to ensure that your foreign marriage certificate, if issued outside Thailand, is legalized in the country where it was issued, translated into Thai, and certified by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An English marriage certificate from Australia may not suffice without these steps. For Australians, the process involves authentication of the marriage certificate at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), followed by legalization at the Thai Consulate.
I'm in the process of doing this. First you need to get marriage certificate authenticated at DFAT, Sydney Passport office for me. $102 AUD per document. Then take to Thai Consulate in Sydney for legalisation. $25 AUD per document. All details available on Thai consulate website.

Post on an Aussie in Thailand group you're not the first Aussie who married a thai in Oz who wants to use marriage as a reason to get a visa/extension inside thailand
Unless I'm mistaken you can get the Oz Embassy here to 'certify' the marriage (like the US and UK used to be able to) and then get it translated and stamped by the MFA here so that you can get the Kor Ror 22 from an Amphur showing that a thai got married abroad <- which is what you needs to get the marriage visa/extension inside thailand
