Hello there,

I am trying to apply for marriage visa not sure how to start, I married my thai wife in Australia 10 years ago, I am an australian citizen lives in bangkok for over six months on tourist visa. my question is can I use the australian marriage certificate to prove the marriage status, if so do I need to register my marriage in thai embassy in Austrlaia before applying or can I apply for the 1 year visa inside thailand or first I have to get 3 months non immigrent marriage visa perhaps going to Cambodian thai embassy rather than travelling to Australia?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking guidance on applying for a marriage visa in Thailand, questioning if they can use their Australian marriage certificate without needing to register it at the Thai embassy in Australia. They wonder whether to apply for the marriage visa inside Thailand or if they should first obtain a 3-month Non Immigrant O visa potentially from a Thai embassy in Cambodia. Community responses suggest visiting local immigration for guidance, acquiring a Non Immigrant O visa first, and ensuring their marriage certificate is authenticated before proceeding with the visa application. Additionally, the importance of being accompanied by their Thai spouse during immigration visits is emphasized.

I have tried the marriage visa I am an Aussie living in the UK and married my thai wife in vegas (USA) the process went

1. Get my marriage certificate authenticated in Nevada

2. Get marriage certificate and Nevada authentication authenticated in the USA state separtment (in Washington DC)

3. had to send everything sent to the thai consulate to get authenticate

4. Then in Thailand had to get the marriage translated to thai

5. Immigration then come out to see you from time to time at your thai residence

Much better and easier to (if you are over 50years old) to get a retirement visa

Oh and good luck opening the thai bank account before you get your marriage visa …. I had to speak to a thai immigration visa office and pay them 7000 THB and I ended up with a Bangkok bank account with 600 THB …..

I still can not exactly figure out how to get step 1 & step 2 done here in Thailand, I just can not find information online, if you don't mind me asking where did your get first authentication done, was it in Aussie embassy in Nevada or any other place?

well as I got married in to The USA (vegas elvis wedding - haha) I had to apply for a Nevada state authentication (Clarke county) it takes about 3 weeks to get this …. The USA state department authentication too over 12 weeks…. If you got married in Oz then may be worth while talking to the birth deaths and marriages in The state you got married to ask how to get the authentication of your marriage certificate ….. USA required 2 authentications as Thailand is not part of The Hague group

I was told I have to go to Thai Embassy in Australia for the authentication of the marriage but yup I am planning to go to Thai immigration in Bangkok first and I guess take it from there, based on what I read online about Non Imm visa, looks like I need to organise it first and then open up a bank account, deposit THB400K for at least two months before applying 1 year visa. I tried call the Thai embassy in Australia several times but no luck, what I still can't figure before translating the marriage certificate into thai, it looks like I have to also register/authenticate the marriage in a thai embassy ?

Earlier post today same question suggested getting your own visa might be easier depending upon your age of course.

You need the Non Imm O first, your marriage certificate certified by your Embassy and possibly translated into Thai.

Just go to the local immigration office with your wife, and they will give you a list of everything you need, and explain to your wife things not on the list. They are very easy to work with. That is the easiest way in doing everything correctly. Just remember, if you do not take your wife with you, they won't help you.
