What do I need to update my bank profile in Thailand?

Update.... I just attended a bank interview, to update my profile, after asking on the phone for a yellow book and passport. I thought I'd take the time to put people's minds at ease. I told my Thai language support team to go shopping , because sometimes things get lost in the translation. I was asked for my passport then my yellow book. I handed over my passport and gave her a blank stare. She then asked for my driver's licence. Job done, painless. A completely different conversation that was had on the phone. No need for a yellow book at all. Despite the fact that I have one. This is how matters should be handled, not shutting down accounts without explanation.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat shared their experience of updating bank account information in Thailand, reporting a smooth process with only the need for their passport and driver's license, contrary to previous assurances that a yellow book would be necessary. This reflection has sparked discussions among other expats about banking requirements and experiences.

Glad you got it sorted out. Dud you go to the branch you opened the account at or will any branch do the necessary. Was access to your account possible immediately or did you have to wait a few days?
Maree ***********
Too right!!!!!!
Pete *******
Immigration gave me two letters, one for opening a bank account and one for drivers licence. Bank only wanted the letter and passport. Same for drivers licence. Was all very quick. No motion of the yellow book
Nongnuch ********
@Pete ******
a yellow housebook is then just a substitute of the Immigration's "certificate of residency", which you need for several purposes like the opening of a bank account, the purchase and registration of a vehicle or the extension of your Thai driver's licence. With a yellow housebook, you don't need the Immigration's "certificate of residency" any more

@Giovanni *********
Why did you have to verify your existing account? Was it freezed like what the BKK bank is doing?
Giovanni **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Sue *********
No wasn't frozen. Read my previous post. I can only guess that suspending peoples account has cost them a lot of business, so the new approach is to call them first.

@Pete ******
You are no different to anyone else. It's after that the bank is calling people back to verify existing accounts.
Pete *******
@Giovanni *********
why would they do that?

Dude criminals aren’t going into the bank…..Just a cleanse 🤔SE ASIA not US banks or similar
Lynnette *******
@Josh ********
2 forms of ID is not unusual in USA and UK for foreigners.
Josh *********
@Lynnette ******
missed the point
Nongnuch ********
@Josh ********
no he didn't miss the point. The Thai bank asks for a TWO-WAY-PROOF of your idendity, which means you have to show TWO official documents issued on your idendity. ONE can be your passport, and the OTHER ONE can be your dirver's licence or your national ID-card
Josh *********
@Nongnuch *******
not disputing ID. Just highlighting ALL people need to attend IN PERSON. Criminals won’t attend. Hence my word CLENSE
Lynnette *******
@Nongnuch *******
sadly I don't have driving licence and in UK we don't have ID. But I had a local bus travel card issued by my council which is "local govt" and Bangkok Bank accepted that ( after some persuasion)

Same same but different 🤣

@Giovanni *********
so if you have a Yellow Book you don't need to renew TM30 on return to Thailand 🤔
Giovanni **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Lloyd ********
Still need to renew your tm30 with immigration. It just means I don't have to travel to immigration to get a certificate of residency. Saves me a two hour round trip.
Paul *****
Maybe a dumb question, and please don’t shoot me down, but what is a ‘Yellow Book’?
Nongnuch ********
@Paul ****
a yellow housebook is a substitute of the Immigration's "certificate of residency", which you need for several purposes like the opening of a bank account, the purchase and registration of a vehicle or the extension of your Thai driver's licence. You can get a yellow housebook from the Amphur as soon as you live permantently under your friend's or wife's address. The process might come a bit more or less complicated, depending on the Amphur and how they see it and how many requirements they will ask for
Michael ********
@Paul ****
if you're married the you can have a yellow house book, like the blue one the wife has, and then you can get a Thai pink ID card which is pretty handy.
Bellucci **************
@Michael *******
The formidable Thai Pink ID card has very limited utility and offers few substantial benefits to foreigners. While it functions as a form of identification for domestic flights, checking into some hotels, and may offer discounts at national parks, it does not grant the holder any special rights or privileges compared to other forms of documentation. You/ we are and will always remain a foreigner or farang
Nongnuch ********
@Michael *******
you don't have to be married to get a yellow housebook. I have a girlfriend since 17 years and I got a yellow housebook on her address
Giovanni **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Michael *******
And even if you are not married you can have a yellow book and Id
Paul *****
@Giovanni *********
How fo I get that?
Giovanni **********

@Paul ****
Basically proof of address.
Paul *****
@Giovanni *********
Similar to a TM30?
Jo **********
So you need a drivers license to have a bank account- how screwed up

When I wasn't forthcoming with my yellow book that's what they asked for.

they want 2 types of ID pink ID card is also OK.

I didn't supply my pink I'd and they didn't ask.

Michael ********
Which bank?
Peter *******
As predicted, yellow book not essential
Bellucci **************
@Peter ******
What does a driver's license have to do with a bank account? Nothing. A person isn't obligated to drive or own a car or a motorcycle.Right ?
Peter *******
@Bellucci *************
She was being pragmatic asking for driving licence as ID/address, good 👍, you can provide something else no problem
Giovanni **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Bellucci *************
Identification purposes.
Bellucci **************
@Giovanni *********
Even a foreign driving license can serve as an identification document. If I don't have a car or a motorbike in Thailand, for example, I'm old or disabled and therefore can't drive, it's clear that I don't need a driving license since even if I wanted to, I couldn't get one. No? Every now and then I say every now and then never a good news? Always disasters and terrible news? But what kind of life is this? Now even stray dogs. Every day a bad news

@Bellucci *************
Maybe you should go argue with them because I don't particularly care.
Karl ******
@Giovanni *********
exactly, told I need a Passport and Thai drivers licence and a service certificate letter from my phone provider. If you disagree like you said I don't care.
Giovanni **********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Karl *****
Why would I disagree your 100% correct. What I find hard to tolerate is people that have been here to long, and haven't got a nice word to say. I really don't want to share in unhelpful comments. This post was not about the advantage of disadvantages of having a yellow book , it was about bank account requirements. I don't particularly care for his opinion whether a yellow book is necessary or not. His opinion doesn't add anything useful to the discussion. Views that are not balanced are not helpful to anyone, read all his posts, it might put what I'm saying into perspective.
