Bank account update on DTV

I made long-term rental agreement, residence certificate, Thai driving license, and went to one branch for each bank in my city. All of them would see my entry stamp (DTV) and apologize. Then I went to TTB. They didn't see stamp at first and started process.

- Passport number

- Visa number (rep entered these details in system)

- Work permit number???

As I said I don't have a work permit, she called her senior. Then made call to call center rep. Two times. The rep would ask me some questions in between. At the end, they said that sir bank account opening has three simple requirements. Unless you don't fulfill them, we can't assist.

- Passport, valid visa, work or study permit

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user attempted to open a Thai bank account using their DTV visa but faced hurdles at several banks, as policies restrict those with a DTV visa from obtaining an account. While some commenters suggest alternatives like opening an account with a retirement or spouse visa (NON-O), others warn against pursuing accounts with a DTV, as they are likely to be closed later on. Overall, the responses reflect a consensus that obtaining a bank account as a DTV holder is challenging and often not feasible.

why keep trying? They don't want people on a DTV to have a Thai bank account. And if you do happen to get one, it could get frozen any minute. Enjoy your stay there and stop trying to be so stubborn.

In my experience the Wise exchange rate is about the same as the Superrich exchange rate, certainly not about 3 percent different as you suggest.

The more traditional banks most times indeed have bad rates.

I've just checked, the difference right at this moment is -0.08 baht so if u exchange 10k usd u lost 800 baht by taking a trip to your favorite physical exchange spot, congrats lol. Online, by definition, is the best option. But 99% including you just don't understand that.

Stop talking rubbish. Open your eyes next time you are in Pattaya. Compare with the rates of bank and other exchanges boxes. Bank will give you at least 1 baht less than the boxes. Impossible that Wise will give same exchange rates like the cash exchange boxes😅🤡

Anonymous participant 412 buying a car at 400k baht from a personal seller. Without a bank account I have to bring all cash to pay for that. Not safe and the seller may not accept that. And then after that, I need to pay for the insurance bill. And in the case of there is a accident claim, the insurance company will not pay me in cash.

Buying cars and insurance sounds to me somthing who lives permantly year around in Thailand and did not apply for correct visa.

Apart from that I can tell you that you can pay in cash, everbody will accept that.

And also international bank transfers are possible, the fees should be acceptable compared with the price of a car.

What is not safe about 400K in cash?

What you mean with you can't receive THB?

DTV is not meant to receive THB, but to spend THB

But I can perfectly receive THB from other Wise accounts if I want.

My GF and I both have Wise accounts and transfer worked perfectly.

Bangkok Bank processing fee is 0.25% of the transfer amount (with a minimum fee of 200 THB and a maximum fee of 500 THB per transaction.

For example (Rent: 30k THB/month):

- 12 monthly transfers: 12 x 200 THB (min. fee) = 2,400 THB/year

- 1 annual transfer (360k THB): Only 500 THB (max. fee cap)

Total saving: 1,900 THB.

Apart from the fact that 1900 THB in a year just is peanuts, is your calculation far from complete.

If withdrawal fee of about 1 percent is such a big deal for you, then you must have nightmares with the heavy fluctuation of thai baht exchange rates, mainly in one direction at the moment.

And why Paypal?

I think the best you can do now is to apply for a TagThai easy card at KBank where you can top up money into your e-wallet and prepaid Visa card using foreign currency (Thai baht too of course), and you can also use the e-wallet for promptpay. At least, this promise seamless payments?

DTV holders are not eligible for a Thai Bank account, so why bother continuing to find a bank who may allow you erroneously? If you obtain one, it'll just get shut down eventually and you'll have wasted so much time and gained nothing but hassle to deal with it and the aftereffects

I mean, it’s not exactly surprising that banks aren’t opening an account for you as that’s how it’s been for DTV holders for about a year now.

Either you get lucky with a branch or some are more amenable if you have a condo purchased but I’ve only heard of that being used to prevent an account from being closed and not opening a new one.
