What are the steps to obtain a police clearance certificate in Bangkok, especially for Australians?

Has anyone recently gotten a police clearance certificate from the Police Clearance Service Center in Bangkok? I’m planning to apply for one on my last day before leaving, just to have it ready in advance for future needs.

Last time, they were ridiculously bureaucratic about the "country of destination." They insisted on an official request from that country, even though I was just proactively gathering documents and hadn’t submitted my application yet. Classic catch-22. In the end, we compromised by listing my home country.

I’m pretty sure I’ll run into the same issue this time. If I’m moving to Australia and need the certificate for work, education, or whatever else, they'll probably demand an official request from some authority again, which makes no sense. If I've lived in Thailand for a prolonged period, I should be able to get criminal clearance information in advance. I could potentially miss out on opportunities just because someone wants to waste time in their office doing nothing.

My partner, a Thai national, had a similar problem recently. We tried to get her certificate ahead of time for a visa application. After speaking with them prior, they said it’d be simple—just bring her ID and a few other docs. But when she flew to Bangkok, they suddenly required an official request from the Australian Home Affairs office. Ridiculous! Waste of a flight. So instead of getting it done, we had to wait for Australia Home Affairs to request it, before providing one, delaying her entire visa process.

Most countries I’ve dealt with let you apply easily and get the certificate within a day or two online, or a physical within a week. Thailand, on the other hand, feels completely outdated, like I need permission from my feudal master as if I’m a peasent just to get a basic police certificate. It’s absurd.

Elements of Thai culture are indeed feudal and have been surpassed in many western states (although UK still feels feudal in many ways). That's exactly what it is 🤷🏻‍♂️

I applied for mine on Tuesday this week. It will be ready by 23rd of October 2024. Cost 100THB or 160THB will local postage.

Why are you winging about this on FB. Do you think it’s going to move mountains. Maybe you are the common denominator of your problem.

Apologies, but I’m used to dealing with institutions I can actually trust to do their job properly. Asking around, whether online or offline, has been helpful in getting insights on how to address the issue. After all, this is an advice group, right? If the office had a more user-friendly attitude, this wouldn’t even be an issue.

I got one a few years ago for an Aviation Security card as I’d been in Udon Thani during Covid. Was told you had to go to the Bangkok office to get your fingerprints done. If in the future you needed another one you could do in Udon.

Luckily I had a Thai friend help out.

Cheap as chips if you’re happy to wait 30 days for post or 3000฿ fee (bribe) to do on the spot.

I just paid the money to avoid possible problems.

I wasn’t in a hurry the first time, so I got my police certificate for 160 baht for a citizenship application.

However, my partner had to pay 2,000 baht, which is absurd—the most expensive police certificate I’ve ever heard of. It feels like staff target those applying to high-income countries like Australia, ‘country of destination’ and the purpose on the form shouldn’t be anyone’s business.

It really makes me wonder about the invisible hurdles involved in running a business, buying property or other life stuff should I stay long term.

I needed mine for a university course in the UK. It’s called a certificate of good conduct, I believe. I gave them all the documents and was given two options. Get it sent back to my Thai address in one month. Or get it sent back to my Thai address in one week for 3,000 baht. I’m not sure how it works to send the certificate abroad. But it’s worth getting before you leave.

I think he is talking about a CRC (Criminal Record Check). Can only be done via Special Branch in Bangkok, to my knowledge. It is a relatively simple process and takes perhaps a week. I did mine through an agent quite cheaply... getting the old style ink finger-printing done was an experience lol 😆. The form and detailed information is available online...

Siam office, they have changed to digital scans these days. Would be funny having black ink on your hands

oddly enough Samuel, I made my application from the UK, but still needed to apply via the same BKK office and send the ink prints... the agent was great, helpful and quick. We'll worth the small fee.

Only one question: Why would you move to Australia??? It's a shit country to live in

I went there with all the documents listed on their website but they requested additional documents, similar to your partner's case. I insisted that I didn't have them, and they eventually let me pass. However, the officer did ask for a bribe to expedite the process, which I refused to pay.

this is what bothers me, for something so simple it’s all of a sudden hard and confusing for no reason.

I did this 6months ago before moving back to the UK. It was a simple process.

maybe it’s easier to have a criminal record, so you can just show that instead 😛 as opposed to a clean record

Got mine at Udon Thani police station. No particular reason that they were concerned about. 5000 baht come back in 7 days. Just needed my passport

seems a bit excessive, price I paid back in April was 160 baht. Was your certificate a local police one in Thai normally used for employment or the Police Clearance one from Siam (picture above).

I guess I paid 3,500baht to drive to Bangkok from Udon but I make a week of it.

@Samuel *******
it a bribe mate as they shouldn't issue unless officially requested. Money talks in Tland.

Easy , just time consuming, go with a Thai person

easy? that sounds good. My last two experiences with the office were quite frustrating.

It's difficult to take a Thai person with me since I live 500 km away in the provinces, and I plan to submit my application the day I leave.
Jay ********
@Samuel *******
Its not difficult or time consuming, no need to take a thai person. I arrived early and was all done in about 1 hour, it took longer because I had to go get cash as they don't accept card. They'll ask for an address in Thailand to send the certificate to, I paid extra and they sent it via DHL to UK but appeared reluctant to do initially, not a normal service. Arrived about 3weeks later in UK. All very helpful, no problems.
