ALERT! CONSULATES PLAYING NASTY GAMES!

Any Experience dealing with any Consulate in the region? we have been told by a couple of them that if I am not a national here I need to have Residence in the area they serve (Cambodia, Thailand...), however they dont tell exactly what that means or how to get it, all they keep saying is to send them photos of our passport, visa and/or any other document to proof residence; to what they say: "it is not what it is needed" and stop replying...

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses frustrations with consulates in Southeast Asia regarding visa requirements, particularly around proving residency. Many respondents clarify that consulates often require applicants to be residents of the country they are applying in to receive specific visas, such as multi-entry tourist visas. Experiences vary, and while some express irritation at the lack of clarity provided by consulates, others stress that these requirements are standard. It is suggested that users research their consulate's specific requirements online or consider hiring visa agents to navigate the process.

Or better still.....Contact one of the many Visa agents across Thailand to help you apply for a Visa....save yourself the headaches.

What country are you from ? ......get on Google and look up your countries Thai Embassy/ Consulate. All the information relating to what are the requirements to get a Visa for Thailand will be on there,....as is the required ID/documents/statements and applications forms to fill out.....good luck.

It really depends...for years now, Thai consulates in parts of Europe, America, Japan, India, China etc. Will only issue visas of any type to residents or citizens of those countries. Some exceptions may apply.

The easiest choice is to use Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar as these countries only restrict nationals of certain African, South Asian countries and China from applying there (unless resident). Vietnamese nationals may also be restricted in the case of Laos and Cambodia. Western nationals, Singaporeans, Japanese and Koreans have no problems as far as not being resident is concerned when applying in these 4 countries.

Singapore is OK if you're not a resident either but their requirements can be complex and thus is best avoided. Denpasar (Bali) seems to be OK as well but risky if you're going all the way there for a visa unless you're applying for a non-immigrant visa with a specific letter that states you're applying in Denpasar. Not many reports out of Jakarta or the Philippines.

Vietnam is doable using an agent. Ho Chi Minh City is OK for marriage visas even if you're not resident in Vietnam.

if I were sure the agents can't read this or I weren't using my name I d tell u exactly, for now all I can share is that they r Europeans.

No one is playing games and no one is looking for a bribe, as you claim. A consulate's job is not to advise you how to become a resident of whatever country you are in at the moment. Why blame them when you don't seem to know the residency rules of wherever you are? As others pointed out, the requirement is not unusual in any way. You just decided to be indignant and expect them to handhold you.

When I applied for a tourist visa for Thailand with a UK passport in Mexico . I was asked for proof of my legal right to be in Mexico ,and why I was there . Also reason I wasn't returning to UK.

Hope that helps â˜ș

Consulates can't help you with the visa here. Most of them gives advice only, can go as far as authentication of your contract, renewal of passport or reporting abused of employers etc. Their main focus is to represent your country for socio economic purposes through tradeshows, expos, luncheons, all affairs that requires spending money but not on their citizens đŸ€ŁđŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł. You need to post your queries to the visa agencies or look at the immigration requirements whatever is your country of origin.

You may want to state what embassy/consulate you’re trying to use and what visa you’re applying for. It’s certainly not them playing “nasty games”. They have specific rules. If you don’t qualify they you can’t get that visa.

Ok. But if you don’t state what embassy/consulate and what visa type you’re applying for there’s not much anyone can do to help.

I am talking about 2 European Consulates, I dont need Schengen Visa, I qualify for about 4 type of these long term Visas, I am using my name here so I need to be careful... my struggle now resides on how to get the residence status needed...

when you become a resident of a country legally you usually acquire some sort of documents. Like a tax doc to prove address, a SocSec number, a stamp in your passport, tenancy agreement maybe? etc. In UK landlords have to check tenants are legally allowed to stay in the country too.
Stuart *********
@Will ********
If it’s a European consulate then you can’t apply unless you’re a resident. If you don’t know how to prove you’re a resident of that country then you probably aren’t. Ergo you can’t apply there.
Delvonte ********
Philippines requires you to be a resident. You can just do it online for your country. Keep it simple

Delvonte Arnold and no need to become a resident to stay long term visa.. no jumping through the hopes like Amazing Thailand does đŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł

If they had the infrastructure and food Thailand would stand no chance.

@Delvonte *******
"IF" they had infrastructure and food? Well, surely thars easily fixed 😆😆😆
JP **********
Roberto Moonshine He meant about the rubbish internet and expensive cost of living especially the basic commodities. Vegetables are expensive than the meat..triple the price now in the Philippines while meat becomes cheaper. Your 1k baht in the Philippines will go no further there while here in Bangkok, you can buy a supply of groceries. You have to make at least 2k usd to live decently in the Philippines.
JP **********
Delvonte Arnold yes if PH has a better internet. But the food in PH is so diverse once you get out of the city Western fast food, grateful that there's no stinky food stalls cluttered around the business district - I lived in Makati. Better go explore the outskirts, there's more hidden gems.
JP **********
Phil Jones? Bangkok looks like a slum area in Makati City. Have you been there? The pollution here and rubbish is astounding compared to Central Business Districts in the Philippines.

This is a VERY common requirement for embassies around the world, and sometimes for specific visas at certain embassies. For example you cannot get a multi-entry tourist visa at any of the Thai embassies in SE Asia unless you are a resident in that country.

You should clearly know if you are a resident of a country and you should know how to prove it. If you don't know, then you are not a permanent resident.

if the rule is that only nationals are accepted I understand, no prob, it turns out the written rules say foreigners who reside in the served countried, when you ask them what they need in any of the countries they dont tell you, they ask you to send what you have to say no and no offer any info further, I honestly dont know if they are asking for bribes, they like the dark so they have room to play and to make up rules on the spot...

Many of us have been a decade in this region n have multiple opportunities to get many papers, however it's hard to know what they need when what is needed is not revealed
Pui *****
@Will ********
it's a bit shocking to read that you've been resident of a country or region for a decade yet don't know what paperwork or documents are given in that country to indicate residency. You keep blaming the Thai consulate instead of you not understanding the rules for residency in wherever you are living. It's not their job to tell you how Laos or Cambodia will consider you legally a resident so that you qualify to apply for a visa from the Thai consulate there. If you've just been using tourist visas to stay extended periods in various countries, then you are by definition a tourist and not a resident of those countries. It's pretty much common sense.

theyve told you. . Provide proof you're a legal resident of "whatever country". Each country may have their own proof of residence document so you need to ask them ( if you don't know if they ever gave you one) then you can submit it.

if you're a legal resident of a country surely you'd have that info already. Not sure what "qualify for papers" means.

How else to ask a question? I'm curious about why you'd need to "apply for papers". Its not a term I've heard of so I explained that. Seems that's upset you.

My son had proof of being a resident where he lived: stamp in passport. Tax number with proof of address. Driving licence.

it's pretty simple. If you have the right to reside in that country (not temporarily) that's what they're looking for. I guess a bit like a green card in the states

ok, what are my options to get these type of documents while in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and or Myanmar?
Lynnette *******
@Will ********
but which of those countries are you a resident of? You'll have proof of being a resident if you are a resident: visa/work permit/residency letter?
Brandon ************
@Will ********
little to none. Probably a work permit or permanent residency are the only ways.
