Seen by a friend at Chiang Khong border this morning

Edit: he came back today, no question asked, smooth process.
Answer summary
Recent experiences at the Chiang Khong border suggest that entry for holders of the Digital Tourism Visa (DTV) has been generally smooth, with many individuals reporting no questions asked during re-entry into Thailand. However, there are discussions about potential requirements for additional documentation like outbound flight details and proof of funds, especially in light of recent notice signs seen at the border. While some commenters express concerns over stricter enforcement of these rules, others emphasize their own smooth experiences without issue. Overall, while checks may vary by individual officer discretion, many in the community encourage having proof ready just in case.

Any experiences of this sign being enforced or anyone denied entry on DTV? I always figured they were just trying to catch people setting up business but this sign is a lil scary

To be honest. I'm not sure how much this is enforced.

I just returned from Bangkok and Ubon Ratchathani and 3 weeks ago on arrival none were checked. Only the passport photo ID and fingerprint scans.

If your a frequent returner the situation is likely different as there is a crack down on people using Holiday visa for other purposes.

Friendship Bridge number 4 appear to be rogue. There was a verifiable report of a DTV holder being told that they would accept sight of his mobile banking app if ever he was requested to prove possession of 20,000 THB cash or equivalent upon entry. Whether that would apply to all border post staff or only to that particular immigration officer, who knows?

Ultimately, it's all up to the IO. Best to have the material available, if requested, but generally it's not. No point in arguing with theories here about it, and even less with the IO.

The DTV has been granted way too softly, so it's possible they're looking to get a bit stricter with checks. Nothing will be consistent.

that just is not true, over a month before travel I booked my return flight for 5 months, so at that moment it was over 6 months.

Most companies accept 11 or 12 months.
Ivan ************
Ivan ************
@Luit ****************
it's not generally cost efficient and particularly not at the moment. Many people don't know what they are going to do in 6 months. Hence why it's not a requirement.

Plus, as others have said, you can get an extension. With your logic all Elite and retirement visa holders should have a flight back out at well, there is no guarantee they will get an extension either.

That is isn't a problem for you personally doesn't mean it's not a problem for anyone else. No one getting this visa expected to be asked for flight tickets out and no one has to date, to the best of my knowledge. So quit acting like it's a normal or reasonable request, it's not.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Ivan ***********
I also did return flights the other way around, it makes not much difference, apart from the fact you have no proof of onward travel.

I think that just like the
*****
baht cash it is mainly used when IO has also other reasons to deny you entry.

And yes I think it is not reasonable that you need to have a return flight im your current stay when extension is just a formality, but it as also understandable from their point of view and with refundable tickets those problems can be solved.
Ivan ************
Ivan ************
@Lu**
you are entirely correct it's technically possible to book flights six months out. I'm taking issue with the idea that this is no problem for anyone if they started to require it. Particularly right now when prices are insane and it's unclear what it will be like in six months.

For you, if you are primarily based in Europe, then yes a return makes sense and is cheaper. I primarily live here; and so while I do usually return to Europe at least once a year (and typically go somewhere else around burning season) I'm doing the return in the opposite direction. So my "return" portion is back here, to Chiang Mai.

Elite is technically also another tourist visa. Do you think it would be reasonable to ask them for flights out too?
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Ivan ***********
I thought this discussion with
@Benjamin ********
was about the fact that tickets for over 6 months are perfectly available, and most times a return ticket is cheaper than two single tickets.

And since you refer to the current situation, my return ticket was cheaper than a single ticket now...

The fact that they don't take into account you can get an extension is also with other tourist visa or visa exempt.

the whole process from the time I got off my bike in the Thai side parking lot to getting back on my bike and going back home was 30 minutes exactly. This included everything including the 3 IO's and 2 bus rides.

The 1 minute refers to the amount of time waiting for the bus after getting my entry and exit stamp on the Laos side.

It was a very efficient and quick process. Faster than I anticipated, but there were 0 people in line on either side each time I had to go to the IO. I was there about 10:30 in the morning.

Adam Mileson To me it looks like Thailand wants to enforce more rules, and when you follow the news you also will notice that enforcing now in some situations also works as cooperation between different departments.

Anonieme deelnemer 176 With DTV you choose a visa with a number of requirements.

When those requirements are not acceptable you should have chosen a different visa.

It is perfectly normal that every now and then Immigration will check for requirements, that is just their job.

You compare apples with oranges, a drivers license is a proof of your skills, at least it should be.

A visa is not based on skills but about your situation.

So you comparison is just stupid, and it is perfectly logical that base documents should be accessible by IO.

Some countries like Schengen countries even state this the moment you get the visa.

The year 2026 will not change anything to this logic, unless you see people like you, not understanding base logic as a symptom of this time.

this is the equivalent of getting your driver's license but needing to carry all the documents you used to apply for your license on you at all times. Yes, its fairly reasonable to assume that in the year 2026 people have more sense then that but obviously we have people like you in this world, unfortunately. Yes its their country and they can do what they want, that doesnt make it logical.

The fact that you were not checked in your 5 entries does noet mean that the (un) official publication does not matter.

They just put attention to rules and ask for cooperation.

A lot of those rules are only in place to have the possibility to deny entry if they see a reason.

How many or maybe better how little people are asked to show

Sam Lotti My comment is general, not to somebody personal.

It is not always clear what is an opinion and what is presented, but in this particular case I read it as if he thinks Immigration is making a mistake by just asking foreigners to have proof of requirements ready.

If true, they are getting real creative there in making things up. 1-3 makes sense. But the rest? There is no legal requirement for an outbound flight for DTV holders. And 5 and 6 were already deeply checked and satisfied at the time the visa was issued. "Welcome to Thailand", indeed.

I can't swear it is 100% as I don't know rules of each country of the world

More than happy to read which country lets you enter temporarily without the knowledge you will get out at some point

Not for nothing they don't let you in if your passport hasn't a 6 month validity still left, for instance

Lots of checks are done by airlines at check in

So maybe you don't notice it.

I have been asked numerous times if I had an outbound ticket (I was flying with different tickets at that time)

5 and 6 are even sometimes checked for other visa holders randomly (ED for ex). And we are talking about 1 year visas, not 5.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 407 and that is completely correct, IO can always check if purpose of visit matches with purpose of visit of the visa, DTV is no exception on this.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Frank-Steven **********
For visa with a limited stay, IO can ask for outbound travel.

The fact that 5 and 6 were checked at moment of approval is not a guarantee they are stlll OK, so it is up to IO to check or not, and certainly not creative.

The outbound travel might be seen as extra check, but I think you will not be refused as long as you comply with all further requirements.
AllSabaai ******

@Frank-Steven **********
let's just make some points clear here.

1- Your are not in a position to decide what is legal required or not legal required.

Your entry is up to the IO decision.

So let's be clear here that holding a visa doesn't mean you have the full power to decide what they can ask

2 - DTV is considered as some special type of Tourist visa so, they can apply the terms of Tourist visa on the commers holing it

Which includes accommodation proof, fund, return ticket within the period of stay.

@Luit ****************
Let’s just agree to disagree. There is different requirements for a) visa issuance, b) extensions, c) border crossings. The DTV is a 5-year long term visa, no return flight requirement. Properly checken 5 and 6 again at some land border based off of complex international documents won’t properly work anyways.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Frank-Steven **********
We are different in our approach of the Thai laws, your focus is on what is not explicitly mentioned and I focus on how each article can be used in not explicitly described situation.

And you can clearly see the law is not written to describe the rights of "the alien".
Frank-Steven ***********
Frank-Steven ***********
@Luit ****************
The only law governing the immigration officers at the border deciding entry into Thailand or not is the Thai Immigration Act of 1979. I have linked an unofficial English translation for you. In 95% IO that deny someone entry they use the 12.2. Pay particular note to Section 12 in general, as it is an exhaustive list of reasons to deny someone entry.
**************************************************************
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Frank-Steven **********
It is nice there is a special law for DTV, but that does NOT describe all the exceptions on general immigration law you suggest there are for DTV, so what makes you think that requirements written in the law you mention are not valid anymore when it comes to IO.

What do you think might be the reason for visa requirements when they should not be applicable anymore the moment you visit the country.
Frank-Steven ***********
Frank-Steven ***********
@Luit ****************
May I ask if you even read the respective official underlying laws? There is a law published particularly on the DTV and its requirements. I shared it here before. That is for issuing the DTV. Then, when it comes to the authorities of immigration officers making their decisions, a completely different law is basis - the Thai Immigration Act. Yes IO can check if somebody entering has sufficient funds. But, there is a reason why in most cases where people are denied entry at the border, the IO actually almost always resorts to denying entry based off of „insufficient funds“. Because there are very few other legal reasons to deny entry. But as we all know, this isn’t exactly a country governed mainly by rule of law. ☺️
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Frank-Steven **********
OK, fine to disagree, I agree that most times it is too complex to check, but nowhere in law is stated the difference between your a, b and c type of requirements.

Of course they normally will not check for practical reasons, even relative simple checks like the 20k cash requirement would generate chaos when everyone was checked.

DTV is NOT a 5 year long term visa, at the moment you arrive you get 180 days to leave the country
