Seeking advice from those with DTV visa under Soft Power category (not digital nomad/workation 😊).

**Semi-long post! ~ TLDR: When re-entering the country on Soft Power DTV, have you been required to show additional proof of participation in a Thai Soft power activity throughout the duration of the 5 year visa? Example: you've completed your soft power activity in 6 months, but still wish to remain in Thailand for the full 5 years on the Visa.

˚∘⊰⋆˙⟡˙⋆⊱∘˚

I have purchased a 6-month cooking course in Bangkok through the Bangkok Thai Cooking Academy, and my DTV application has been denied twice (while applying entirely on my own, without going through a visa servicing company).

Now, I am in conversation with two different DTV specialists, and one of them said that with the DTV:

"Applying under the Soft Power category may create complications later on because the course duration does not cover the entire validity period of the visa.

While the DTV visa is valid for 5 years, each stay is granted for up to 180 days at a time. Every 180 days, you must leave Thailand and re-enter to receive a new period of stay.

When re-entering Thailand, Immigration officers may ask for updated documentation from the school or training provider to confirm that you are still actively participating in the program. If you are unable to provide such evidence, you could face difficulties at the border, including the possibility of being denied entry.

In some cases, you may also need to enroll in and pay for an additional course to maintain supporting documentation for future entries. For this reason, it is important to carefully consider the long-term implications before choosing the Soft Power route."

For those with the Soft Power DTV who have done at least one visa run beyond 180 days, what has your experience been with this? Have additional proof or activities been required?

Tysm in advance 🙏
Answer summary
This post discusses concerns about re-entry requirements for the Thailand Digital Tourist Visa (DTV) under the Soft Power category. The user seeks experiences from others who have completed a Soft Power activity (e.g., cooking course) about whether they have faced requests to show proof of ongoing participation during subsequent entries into Thailand after the initial course is finished. There are mixed responses in the comments regarding the necessity of providing evidence of active participation upon re-entering Thailand, with some saying they've been questioned while others state they have had no issues. Overall, the conversation highlights the uncertainty surrounding visa compliance and future regulations.

Mostly antidotal, but the stories have been increasing about pushback, both on issuing the DTV and when returning to Thailand that the course duration does not match the visa duration.

I've been coming to Thailand for 23 years and never once been questioned. I've never overstayed or had an ED visa. I'm sure they'd be happy if I showed them my trading account.

I haven't been here permanently that long only for holidays using tourist visas/exemptions. I'm only now in a position to be here long term I'll be 50 in three years.

Yes, you need to have an active Muay Thai course or cooking class. Immigration can ask for you to prove and can deny you entry

am I a jerk because I am telling the facts or because I don’t give the answer you all want to hear? Would it make you happier if I say: “ No, you definitely don’t need to book any new course, you don’t even need to attend to Muay Thai or cooking class because Immigration will surely not ask, don’t carry money with you as well, be sure to be as broke as possible because they will not ask you for proof of funds”. Tell me, is this the answer you want to hear?

GrayWallaby8130 Thats not fully addressing my question ☺️ I have purchased the Thai cooking course and plan to participate once the visa process goes through. I simply asking about the need to have additional courses for the re-entry after the 180-day period, based on information I received from one visa servicing agent!

it is fully addressing your question. If you want to have peace of mind when entering the country, make sure you have an active course. Or you can risk it, there is a high chance Immigration will not ask you to show anything but if they do, then you have a problem

GrayWallaby8130 that's 🚫 NOT TRUE ...at THIS time there's no further requirements to continue to participate in the Soft Power Activity for which you were approved.

Can that change in the future? Unknown.

However... if you have NEVER participated in the Soft Power Activity course you signed up for...then Thai Immigration Officers can ask and have asked about which course.

Even called the Muay Thai training gym to ask if they were participating in the gym ? Two fellas were DENIED ENTRY...as they got the DTV visa for Muay Thai and never attended. They were on their 3rd entry when questioned by Thai Immigration Officers.

GrayWallaby8130 Incorrect. There is no requirement to enrol in a subsequent course after your original one has ended.

I've came back 2 times now on the dtv and they have not asked any proof of course.

don’t just pick the answer you would like to hear or the one which is more convenient for you. And definitely do not listen to that old troll Christopher Kilcourse or his buddy James Miller. Let’s just be realistic and ask yourself the question(hopefully the 2 old guys will read this also):

Why would somebody give you a 5 year visa for a 6 month course? Why does the DTV visa have more categories like Workation or Soft Power Muay Thai or Cooking Class, or Medical? Because when you apply for the visa you say: I am applying because I want to do Muay Thai or because I am sick and I want to treat myself in Thailand, or make my teeth in Thailand. Of course they are not asking you to book a 5 years course because it would be absurd but the idea behind this is that if you get a 5 years visa based on Muay Thai, then you should continue attending to Muay Thai also after your initial 6 months course is over. So if we think logical, if your course is over and you did not book a new one or maybe you never even attended to your initial course, then you are not eligible for the visa anymore. This is so obvious that if someone is unable comprehend this and still trying to contradict me is weather on idiot or he is just trying to deny the reality. Yes, it is not an official requirement to extend your course, but yes you can be asked to prove your attendance anytime.

Same thing with the 500k proof of funds. Many people here have a big mouth and they are rushing to say that the 500k is not a requirement when entering the country. So why is it then required when people apply for the visa? Just for fun because they have nothing better to do? It’s a requirement when you apply for the visa and when you enter the country is not a requirement anymore and if you made it so far means that you can enter the country with 10$ in your pocket and get stamped for 6 months? Just think, people, think🙄. Just like for the other visas the requirements are 400k and respectively 800k( for getting stamped for 1 year), in the case of DTV it is considered that you need 500k to support yourself in the 6 months you get stamped, money which you need for each 6 months when you enter the country.

In conclusion, yes, it’s not an official requirement to renew your course after the initial 6 months corse expires and the 500k is also not an official requirement when entering the country. Most of the people are not asked to show all this but you can be asked anytime and if you cannot show, you can get in trouble.

Thailand is a highly corrupt country where you have to give bribe literally at every step and where the laws are scrapped and replaced with new ones overnight. In most of the cases you are at their complete discretion, they can do with you whatever they want and all you can do is smile and say Khap khun krap.

@Christopher **********
just tell me how can you say that somebody is complying with the requirements when they apply based on Muay Thai and after 6 month they are not doing Muai Thai anymore because the course is over? What are they going to do for the rest of 4,5 years? That is a clear abuse of the visa. Is that so difficult for you to comprehend?

total rubbish is what you are telling here, you think that all DTV holders are subscribed to this group? Do you think all members from this group are immediately reporting here their experience with immigration? Of course not, so don’t try to be smart and build your statistic only on what is being written on this group. There is an ongoing crackdown on DTV visas especially on those who stay 179 days, leave the country and return for another 179 days. This was definitely not the initial purpose of the DTV visa. Just wake up, man and pull your head out of the sand. Immigration can ask for any of the visa application requirements and they will ask more and more often

GrayWallaby8130 Total rubbish. You accept there is no requirement to enrol in a subsequent course after your original one has ended. You also accept that possession of 500,000 THB is an application requirement only and not ongoing. There has been one verifiable instance of two guys with DTVs being denied entry. Immigration checked with their Muay Thai Boxing gym who confirmed they hadn't ever attended. What nobody knows was why immigration checked up on them? They may have had previous history of immigration matters or maybe some other information was known about them? In conclusion, consider the number of DTV holders and the number of times each has entered Thailand in two years. There are no ongoing requirements either on paper or de facto. How could anybody 'get in trouble' for complying with the requirements of their DTV?

be sure to sign up for a soft power activity course of 9 or 12 months vs 6...as we are seeing reports of the Thai Embassy or Consulate issuing the METV multiple entry tourist visa instead of the DTV visa. The METV is good for 6 months of entry into Thailand.. AND would allow you time to complete a 6 month soft power activity course.
