Hi,

I need to renew my annual visa โ€” it's a Non-Immigrant O (Thai Family / wife) visa. I am German and based in Bangkok. This time, I will be abroad traveling when the visa expires, so I have a few questions:

1. How many days or weeks in advance can I apply for the extension?

2. Is it also possible to apply after the visa has expired โ€” for example, one week later?

3. Lastly, I would really appreciate it if someone could share from experience which documents are usually required for the extension.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,

Daniel

TLDR : Answer Summary
Daniel, a German expat living in Bangkok, is seeking advice on renewing his Non-Immigrant O visa while he travels abroad. Key questions include how early he can apply for the extension, whether he can apply after the visa has expired, and what documents are needed for the renewal. The responses indicate that one can apply for an extension when there are 45 days or less left on their visa, that applying after expiration is generally not advisable due to potential overstay penalties, and it's suggested to check specific documentation requirements at the immigration office.

In Bangkok you can apply for a new extension of stay when you have 45 days or less left on your current stamp

As a rule NO, you would be on overstay at 500baht a day until you apply for the extension AND it would totally be up to the immigration officer you're in front of as far as if they would let you clear the overstay & apply for the extension.

This is a GENERIC hand out listing the requirements for an extension based on marriage to a thai. It covers most of the things the immigration office can ask for BUT it is not office specific. I would go out to Chaengwattana with your thai wife, go to the first cubby on the right in Section L-1 and get the hand out listing the requirements at Chaengwattana

Hi
@T**
/ Thai Visa Advice,

Is the 45 days before expiry of the 12 month Non-O visa, or before the latest entry stamp?

My annual renewal expires 15 July 2025, but I am currently in UK. So, if I were to re-enter Thailand on 1 July, Iโ€™d get stamped in for 15 days (until end of current visa), right?

In this case, since current visa and entry stamp would have fewer than 45 days remaining, I could apply for a 12 month extension immediately - then return 21 days following successful submission of extension application.

Iโ€™d appreciate confirmation of my understanding above, as it will determine upcoming plans.

when you enter thailand doesn't matter
@Kevin ***********
you have an extension that's good until 15th July 2025 meaning in bangkok you can apply for a new extension on or after May 31st

You can apply for a new extension from that date right on down until the day your current stamp expires

@Tod ********
just one last question. Are those days mentioned only working days or just like normal days? Depending on that it could make a big difference.
Tod *********
@Daniel ********
are what days mentioned? The 45 days before you can apply is straight count (calendar days) as is the 21 day under consideration stamp

2 won't apply if he's not in Thailand at the time his visa expires. In that case it's just gone.

@Daniel ********
if you don't get an extension BEFORE you leave the country and you're outside the country when your current stamp expires then as
@John *********
correctly stated; you would lose the extension you're on and have to start all over from zero.

Thanx John (y) I left that out ๐Ÿ™‚

One last thing, remember when you apply for a year extension based on marriage IN BANGKOK you get a 21 day under consideration stamp and you have to show back up on that date to get the year inked in ๐Ÿ™‚
