Hi folks, For the last few years I have been on a 4 month contract at a Bangkok University. I get a 3 month Non-B visa in Australia, and I extend that visa to 4 months once in Bangkok.. This year I will be on a 12 month contract. During those 12 months I will return to Australia for 3 months. The advice I seek is, should I get a multiple entry 12 month Non-B visa or should I get a 3 month Non-B and extend? I have read that you can extend the 3 month visa to a multiple entry 12 month one, once in Thailand. Many thanks

I have looked at the Sydney Thai Consulate webpage but could not find sufficient information.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the best visa strategy for a 12-month employment period in Thailand, particularly whether to obtain a 12-month multiple entry Non-B visa or a 3-month visa followed by an extension. Responses indicate that a 12-month multiple entry visa is not available from the Sydney consulate; instead, a 90-day single entry Non-B visa is recommended. After arriving, the user can extend their stay for one year based on employment after obtaining necessary documentation from their employer. They have the option to get a re-entry permit once the extension is granted.

you can choose single or multiple entry extension then at the immigration office. Just down to what you want to pay.

Apply for the Non Immigrant B visa with Single Entry, get 90 days on entry and after 60 days you can apply for the 1 year Extension of Stay based on working in Thailand.

As soon as this stamp is inked in your passport, you can apply for the Re-Entry Permit to travel and keep this 1 year stay alive

You cannot get a year long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type B visa based on employment from a consulate that is on the eVisa online system. They only allow 90 day single entry

So get a 90 day single entry, come in get 90 days, when you have 30 days or less left on that stamp, get the documentation from the employer, go to the immigration office and apply for a year long extension of stay.

Extensions of stays in thailand are sold without any 're-entry' (because you're already IN thailand).

Once you get the year extension, you can buy either a single re-entry permit for 1000baht (let's you out and back once) or a multiple re-entry permit for 3800baht (let's you out and back all you want for the duration of the extension.

Out of interest, when would one apply for a 1 year Non-B visa? Under what circumstances?

that's up to you. It's only sold at a few embassies that still require you to submit your application in person. If you don't mind leaving Thailand at least once every 90 days you could still get it. But most of the embassies and consulates in neighboring countries are switching to e-visa soon, so it won't be an option for much longer.
