What are the options for a parent seeking a DTV visa in Thailand when working outside the country?

Hi All!

I have a child and girlfriend living in Thailand and I'm currently looking at suitable visa types. My job makes things a little trickier as I work outside of Thailand for 28 days and then I will spend 28 days in Thailand away from work, this rotation will carry on indefinitely so multiple entries is a must. I sent an email to the Thai E Visa website and they responded saying a DTV would be the most suitable option. However, when I look at applying for a DTV on the E Visa website the only choice I seem to have is that of a spouse of a DTV holder and not that of a parent of a Thai dependent as the lady stated in her reply. I've tried emailing a few times again but just get the same reply stating the DTV. Has anyone here been granted a DTV as the parent or guardian of a Thai dependent and if so how did you go about it?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on suitable visa types for living in Thailand part-time while having a Thai child and girlfriend. They are currently facing confusion regarding the DTV visa application process and whether it is applicable as a parent of a Thai dependent. Various community responses suggest alternatives, emphasizing the Non-O Dependants visa and the challenges associated with obtaining a Thai child custodian visa. Several commenters also mention the possibility of visa on arrival options given the user's 28-day stay cycle.

Very strange that someone tasked to give you proper advice on Thai visas advised getting a DTV of a Thai child or girlfriend category. These categories do not exist, and that should be known to many, if not to those tasked to advice visa applications. Are you sure that this really happened?

I don't know how remote work really works, obviously you wouldn't work in Thailand but your job would offer you substantial time IN Thailand while also being employed. Could that be what she meant?

Otherwise, just get the custodian visa. There's a visa category for that.

You don't need any visa with 28days in and out

in the long run you do.

Get your company to write you a letter to say you are a remote worker and apply for DTV that way. Think that is what i am going to do when current visa expires. Presumably you work offshore or something, already asked my company as they said will write letter as I do work remotely on ships and offshore

You just apply for it off your own back. Your Thai family for irrelevant for this particular visa.

Thai child "custodian" visa is difficult as in many offices you would have to have sole custody.

Some offices will bend with 50%.

If the child is under 7 yrs you would have to go through the courts to obtain an order.

If over 7 may be able to go to local Amphur for a document.

The easiest path would be DTV

prove funds.

Enroll in a soft program, muay thai, cooking whatever.

This gives you 6 mths multi entry.

It is a leisure visa so doesn't matter if you go to whatever

And you only need a contract for maybe 6 Mos and are given a 5 yr visa.

If you're only in Thailand for 28 days I'm pretty sure you can get a visa on arrival

Maybe have a look at Non (O) Dependants VISA mate. I'm not sure, but you may fit the requirements. Good luck

That, at best, will get a Non-O single entry Visa giving 90 days stay so only two entries, the second on a re-entry permit. It seems like a multi-entry Tourist Visa might get the OP 3 or 4 entries if timed correctly if he is under 50 and cannot get a retirement Visa.

but if under 50 can't this get him a 1 year VISA, because his child is his dependant?

It's very difficult to get things like Visas and extensions inside Thailand based on having a half Thai child born to an unmarried couple

fair comment mate. It was a thought that may have been worth looking at.

You don't qualify for a DTV because you have a Thai child. You do one of the things that qualifies for the DTV and apply that way. Your girlfriend and child have nothing to do with it.
