TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the appropriate visa for a 6-month stay in Thailand to be with their 16-year-old Thai son. Several users suggest various options including the 90-day Non-O visa as a custodian to a Thai child, a multi-entry tourist visa, or a two separate tourist visa strategy. There are discussions regarding the requirements for a Guardian visa and confirmation that getting a visa for raising a Thai child is possible but may have subjective requirements. The conversation also touches on the complexities of applying for visas through embassies and the misinformation regarding local embassy authority.

Guardian visa is the straightforward option. But you're also fine using two tourist visa if you stay just 6 months. And the multiple entry tourist visa is an option, although that one is more cumbersome and more expensive.

you can not get a Guardian visa for a Thai child. A Guardian visa needs the child to be on an Ed visa (for a foreign child). I have just attempted that and failed.

maybe the naming is different but you can 100% get a visa for raising a Thai child.

I’ll let you know how my Custodian visa goes. All I’ll say is that it seems a little subjective based on the list of requirements I was given recently.

Can i apply for a visa in the thai embassy in pnomh penh ?

yes. You use one tourist visa, extend it, go abroad, and then apply for another tourist visa. That one you then also extend.

my local embassy (FR) says they are not in charge of, and has no authority over, visa issues for French nationals wishing to visit/stay in Thailand and that only the Thai authorities are authorized to answer such questions 🙄

I could get a telephone appointment at the end of May with the Thai embassy... it's late, so I'm asking this group, thanks

ok thanks

local Embassy means the Thai Embassy serving your locality not your Embassy

you're now hijacking somebody else's topic and you ask one specific person. That's barely the same as asking the group.

I don't know the exact requirements.

check with your local embassy.

Simplest for you is probably a multi entry tourist visa

No problem been using non -imm for years myself for now she is 22 I get a Non -Imm O Family, same rules apply. Money etc.

Yes you can apply for a 90 days Non O visa as a custodian to a thai child until he’s twenty years old. The requirements are the same as married to a thai, -funds equal to 400K thai baht or monthly income/pension equal to 40K thai baht.

90 days i can have with a tourist visa

@Jean *********************
Yes, but you can apply for a one year extension of stay in Thailand on the same requirements as married to a thai. And if you buy a re-entry permit, you can just come and go as you wish.
